the attack was never meant to be a clean wipe of the japanese fleet. Just one round and back. And then the second attack from ANzac when the fighters was forced to land to kill the fleet. The plan worked but the 7/8 hits wasn’t planned. But as you said the can open from italy didn’t worked as planned either. Dice at its best.
