    • RE: Naval Units: what is worth buying?

      Carriers and fighters are the best combo as far as I’m concerned on offense or defense.

      I’ll guarantee a CV/FIG combo with destroyers will make most think twice about using bombers. :evil:

      I personally expect to see the A&A franchise to dissappear altogether in a year or two. I’m stocking up on as much AA stuff asI can get.

    • RE: TripleA standardization

      I gotta say I like TripleA. I just got it. I can see that it is kinda cheesey in some aspects. But if you want play a game without setting up a board it’s really nice.

      And, yup you were so right Jen when you said the AI sucks. It is great for kicking around ideas though.

      The other plus I see is the fact that most of the guys I play with have ‘Grown-up’ lives, that’s not a slam to anyone, but when people have careers and kids it can be hard not to have ‘Jr’.come take a swipe at the board with his rattle.

      An added plus is that you can have the game or a movie on while you alternate around the computer. While this doesn’t replace that ‘table on the board’ experience. It’s a great tool in my opinion.

      OMG!!! I was about to have a ‘Rainman Fit’ as I was reading the posts.

      Plastic is a petroleum product and I don’t need to go on one of my tirades about the pieces in the the latest A&A editions. That said, the crash in global economics combined with oil prices and the drop in Chinese manufaturing had resulted in:

      1.This may be a Ltd. Ed due to profitability v.s. nieche product.
      2.The poor quality in aspects of recent AA products.
      3.A decline in interest in hobby poducts accross the board i.e. Paper/Pen RPGs, Tabletop Wargames, etc.
      4.More focused production and marketing of CCGs combined with higher profit margins.
      5.The popularity of console/computer gaming combined with the relative ease of production and, more rapid placement in the market. i.e. you can buy that crappy RTS A&A for ten bucks at Half Price Books or Walmart.

      My last example is with AD&D miniatures the whole line will be cancelled sometime in the next 1-2 years.
      The production in toys (AKA Hasbro), is one tenth the production is was last year due to us Yanks spending less.

      Finally, while I admire alot of peoples passion for going out and buying copies of AA50 even if you bought ten each that wouldn’t stop the axw from falling. You wanna buy multiple copies, buy them for yourself, but don’t expect it to save the line. :cry:

      @tin_snips:

      i’m seriously contemplating just buying another copy of AA50A. for the extra pieces, and as they may stop printing it

      LOL….This is pathetic. I was just consider that tonight at work! I’ve also thought of getting a second copy of AAR for the same reason. :evil:

      Cruisers seem to be one of those things you buy when you want a battleship and a bomber but can’t afford both and donforget that you can do naval bombardment withthe cruiser. It’s maybe like buying that last infantry or buying a pack of gum in the checkout line :-D

    • RE: Finding F2F groups

      You could try MySpace. Right now I’m just gathering aquaintences and my brother to recruit gamers. I’d like to eventually build an informal f2f club with people I know. It sounds crappy but I hate playing ‘pick-up’ games at the hobby shop although ‘friend-of-a-friend’s’ doesn’t bother me.

      Another way to get players is to get people you know who play other games, and intro them to A&A. Back in the the day a group of us were playing Starcraft or Starfleet on the Sega Gennesis and I had a copy of A&A and intro’d it. Since then just about everyone who played still plays. Now we’re just grown-up and spread all over the country.

      The group me and my bro are looking to start has a bunch of Magic players and people who like Settlers, AD&D, etc.

      It’s just my opinion but that’s the best way to go. If you have an A&A classic game  (I have two) you can use that to train noobs. I’d suggest going for a monthly schedule too. My friends are all busy with work, kids, etc. and one Sunday or Saturday a month is do-able.

      I eventually plan to make a Myspace site for our group so we can keep track of everything and keep in touch.

      Hopefully these suggestions will help. Good Luck.

    • RE: Patton’s Plan for Russia and Macarthur’s plan for China…

      @AHeroCompany:

      I wouldn’t say Korea was the least “popular,” it’s probably more forgotten about than anything. It was considered a “police action,” especially after 1951, when the lines were practically stabilized at the 38th parallel. Then it became a stalemate for two years before something was signed, but technically, they’re still at war.

      You’re correct. It wasn’t technically a war. I don’t have direct evidence to support the statement that Korea was the most unpopular war. However there are many documentaries and stats to back this up. You didn’t see the protests that Vietnam saw, but there was a massive disapproval and discontent with the general public over it.

      The people of post-war America did not like this war. Nor was the US military in the best shape to fight it. Much of the surplus equipment from WWII was defective after years of mothballing and the fighting in Korea was miserable.

      @Bierwagen:

      Unfortunately, I haven’t seen any games under 7 hours either.  Ours actually tend to roll longer… lots of drinking and smack talk involved.

      LOL It’s funny cause’ it’s true!!

    • RE: How to fix board warping problem

      I haven’t seen this problem yet but I live in WA where it rains like a cold Vietnam. My solution is to get a piece of glass or plexi-glass and lay it over the board eventually after a few games you won’t need it. If it starts again just repeat the process. That way your game can stay portable, and I’ll bet alot of us out there alreay have glass tabletops. Lastly the added bennefit of having an ‘anti-beer/beverage’ screen is a plus. :-D

      I’ve got to agree with Tin, If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. You’ll have a bunch of WWI infantry style battles and a whole lotta sloggin’ in the mud entrenchment.

      What about making a tech advancement such as ‘heavy armor’ 2d6? that could balance out against the allies ability to gain heavy bombers.

      It’s been along time since I played AAE. But there were SZs that you could capture that took away money from the allies, just like a land territory.

    • RE: Naval Units: what is worth buying?

      Yeah I’ve done stuff similar to that. After doing some reading around here I see alot of folks thinking along the same lines. I think the root cause of subs not being so hot is that the added destroyers to other AA games as, I suspect…a gimmick, without thinking it through well enough. Now it looks like DDs will be attack capable cannon fodder and the no defense TRN ? Well I’ll have to see how it all plays out in reality.

      I think they should’ve had convoy zones from AAE incorperated into AA50. Let subs defend against air, and kept the 1 DEF for TRNs.
