RE: Global 1942 Scenario by Larry Harris
Well like the scenario or hate it. It does keep the game healthy. Axis & Allies can be a huge investment for a gamer. Although not the same type of game, a game like Flames of War, Bolt Action, M44 and various other war games thrive on scenarios and such. This keeps those franchises healthy.
So while some may not care for this scenario it does extend the longevity and replayability of the game.

RE: HBG - Axis & Allies Parts/Accessories and Custom Piece Sets Store!
Coach,
Have you ever considered contacting Neil Schuck of the Meeples and Miniatures podcast? He specializes in miniature war games, board games and rules sets for historical and fantasy games. I’m sure he’d be interested in talking to HBG and your products as well as your experiences in the miniatures market. He recently posted a Kickstarter project; The Great War designed with Richard Borg and his Commands and Colors system, with pieces manufactured by Plastic Soldier Company. I believe he will be interviewing the people behind this game in one of his next podcasts.
He’s (Neil Schuck) based out of the UK which is one of the world’s largest producers of game miniatures. However he frequently explores games coming out of the American market. It would be a great way for HBG to expand your audience and perhaps open up to new markets and customers.

RE: Global 1942 Scenario by Larry Harris
@GN. The scenario is designed for tournament play to allow for it to be played at conventions and the like in a shorter period of time than OOB G40.
If you’re looking for something more like G40 there are a few scenarios designed by forum members you should search for. Midnight Express and Oztea are two site members who have made some scenarios for Global set in 42 and 43.
Good Luck.

RE: Dangermouse finally found some time to paint…..
I have to echo John Brown! Nice pieces!

RE: Majik's custom global painted pieces
Love the pieces Majikforce!
I no longer have the patience to paint my markings like you do. However I will be making my own decals using a special technique I’ve developed that will use the OOB roundels to mark my sculpts.
@DK good point you made. My OCD wants historical sculpts. But my practicality and impatience will not allow for micro decals.
Again, awesome pieces Majik!

RE: Inkwashes
Google future floor wax ink wash. It’s a technique mini wargamers and figure painters use and it’s a cheaper way to make your own rather than use some of the brand name more expensive product.
Though there isn’t anything wrong with brand name stuff it can be pricey especially when you are painting in volumes of pieces such as an A&A set.

RE: John Brown's Painted Axis and Allies Pieces
I’ve put the brush down myself for a while now but will probably start back up tomorrow. I might suggest the “dip” method using either Army Painter or even just plain old Minwax Polyshades. With either “dip” I use a drill and customized bucket to spin them which allows for a more thin but extremely durable coat and shades the pieces nicely.
Once they’re dry you can apply a dull coat. However I like my pieces shiny so I don’t dull coat.
A tip I always suggest to people who want to practice painting first is to buy some “Dollar Store” army men to practice your craft on. If you screw up it’s no biggie and it’s a lot of fun!

RE: Simplicity in House Rules…
Basically I have two kinds of players I play A&A with. For casual player and family I can con into playing A&A with during the holidays, it’s all about simplicity. When I can get an A&A junkie like myself and one of my brothers playing, we can do complicated HRs. For that middle ground game I use a little of both. Frankly most games I get in, because I only play FTF, are Revised and Classic with 42.2 coming in distant 3rd place. Global with “Toblerone’s House Rules” is solo and experimental.

RE: Simplifying units interactions of Transports, Submarines, Destroyers & planes
@Baron:
Thanks Barney,
it seems that the old version is inspired by the Revised rule.
I was more about a way to integrate a transport with 1 hit value into the more recent (and better) rules. One special thing which may rise an issue is this question that I somehow found in another forum and I made up a specific case to our Topic on Simplifying Transport unit:
@Baron:What happens if we have a mutual elimination of all Combat units in a SZ with an amphibious assault going on, and Transports from both sides are still in the same SZ?
Attacker: 2 StBs, 2 TPs A0 D0, 1 hit value, but cannot attack
Defender: 1 DD, 3 TPs, A0 D1, 1 hit value eachFirst round: Attacker scores 1 hit and defender scores two hits.
Assuming that we still play TPs taken last or the defending player choose to keep the transport instead of the DD.Do the attacking transports live and can do the amphibious assault or must retreat instead?
I hope Der Kuenstler and Toblerone will tell me how they would treat such a naval situation, since both have played with a kind of Classic Transport within G40.2/1942.2 rules?
Would you still let the 2 Transports carry on the amphibious assault, since the 3 defending Transports could have been ignored if there was no combat unit with them?
In this case, the SZ would have 5 Transports in it, at the end of the attacking player turn.Or do you see it as if the 3 Transports are acting like blockers and so can defend ( 3 Def @1) against the two incoming Transports?
In games where we’ve played with “Classic” transports this battle probably wouldn’t have occurred. For the sake of argument we’ll say it did. The attacker’s transports would be forced to retreat because they cannot attack.
I say the battle wouldn’t happen because if we were playing a game with “classic” transports most players I’ve played with wouldn’t make that assault knowing the transports will have a defense in that instance.
In my FTF games where transports have a defense score HR, no one is buying AP’s for “blockers” and generally when AP’s are bought their almost always in combination with land units in the purchase phase.
As of right now I’m planning to use my 8-8-8 rule with 3-1-2-8 for subs formula that you have recently mentioned Baron.
My last game had one single HR which was just for ease of play because he was pretty much a newbie to anything later than the Hasbro CD rom. That HR was that “All subs are treated as regular naval units”. That was just to speed the game up and it wasn’t all that serious of a game.
Hope that helps.

Im at work right now Baron and have some other posts I need to work on. But yes the concepts you outline look intriguing.

Baron,
I think your heavy attack low defense sub is perfect with the 8-8-8 formula! I like it.

RE: Simplicity in House Rules…
@Young:
Great post, and thanks for sharing that chart… I always try to keep my house rules simple and in line with game mechanics that already exist in the regular rules. As for Larry’s comments… I think classic edition was a very condensed board game with only a handful of units to represent everything in the war. Sure it was more complicated than risk, but it’s also 10X more fun. The editions that came later (especially anniversary edition and 1940 global) was driven by the hardcore fans of Classic A&A. In the 80s the populous had their little “game of high adventure” to be played “in a few short hours”, but now it was time to up the anti as far as the true fans were concerned, and it’s the whole A&A franchise that gets labeled as “hard as hell to play” not the first cookie cutter edition from Milton Bradley. Also, these are different times now, back then the board game market was expected to sink from the weight of the new video game craze, and all the new “arcades” that were popping up. The Milton Bradley series (Axis & Allies, Shogun, and Fortress America) was aimed at the masses to try and compete with Atari, and Nintendo, and therefore needed to be exciting as well as easy to learn.
Now that society is spit into so many scenes, clicks, bubbles, trends, cells, etc… that boards games have evolved into the “I don’t care if I’m popular” attitude, because “I have enough fans who love me”. Ironically board games which were incredibly popular in the 70’s in contrast to the “computer geeks” at Atari who were inventing pong and astroids, have now inverted to having the huge “cult following”, while the obscure and difficult to own video games have become the popular drama queens of our modern times fighting for popularity. It has become cool to play board games again, just for the fact that everyone is climbing over each other to play the next “Call of Duty”. However, there’s nothing cool about Monopoly, Sorry, or the Game of Life… board games today are sophisticated and challenging, board gamers and especially A&A players should never be apologetic for learning and playing such a “hard as hell” game. We had the simplistic years with Classic edition when we had to share our passion with millions of people, now we get to play more complex rules with bigger editions… so I say screw popularity, A&A has never been better in my opinion. Â Â Â Â Â Â
I agree with much of what you’re saying YG. Lately though I have really discovered the diversity of today’s gamer and the amount of really great WWII games there are out there. Additionally I have rediscovered Risk! and many, many other really good war/fantasy/sci-fi miniature/board hybrid games. Another discovery I have made is that there is a large number of traditional hex and tile games which are really good; and frankly in some ways, easier to play than my beloved muse Axis & Allies.
Much of this new perspective and philosophy has come from Axis & Allies clubs themselves. They like many of us who grew up with A&A simply cannot commit a whole day to a session of Global and therefore are expanding into other games for more casual meet-ups, and save Global for a “big event day”. And while I agree with “screwing popularity” and consider A&A as my top game, I have had a VERY difficult time creating a solid group. My best member, and best HR play-tester, is so busy running his business and working his job that even a quick game is hard to schedule. I have five-eight other potential members for a gaming group, but A&A while prominent in our regular line up, will not be an exclusive.
Last while I LOVE the A&A franchise, Larry really needs to consider the some of the development suggestions that have been made by his inner circle. Yes veterans of the franchise and “power gamers” need the franchise to continue evolving but he also needs to recognize that for the “A&A Army” to survive we need fresh recruits. 1941 IMO didn’t do that. Black Elk in many posts has suggested a simple core set and an advanced set with complimenting expansions. I think many agree and (like myself) have thought of this before. So Larry for SE42 3.0 give us a basic and advanced rule set.
As for simplicity of play and house rules,
More to come later…
