• Germany started by pummeling the Royal Navy, but suffered disproportional losses in Luftwaffe. The fall of France was also at great expense leaving the Wehrmacht with just two tanks in France, plus the infantry and artillery left in Normandy. Germany also seized Finland and Bulgaria and did a ‘one-round’ attack on Yugoslavia with units from Southern Germany and one infantry from Romania in order to get that Southern German stack into Romania (two infantry lost). British troops now stand in Yugoslavia (seemed the most logical allied troops to put there) but it is still uncontrolled. Germany takes 68 IPC’s (38 board, 10 NO’s, 19 from France, 1 spare). Germany places a tac bomber and 6 infantry. Incidentally, Germany is out of subs.

The Soviets took Korea with three infantry and stacked everything else in the east on Sakha. A fighter and tac bomber also head east. Northern Iran is also taken with one infantry and the troop disposition on the Soviet western front changed somewhat. Stalin takes 40 IPC and places 6 infantry, a tac bomber, an artillery and a mech infantry.

Then it’s Japans turn, Japan buys three transports and a mech inf. Japan enters China and takes maximum territories there, also retakes Korea, takes Amur and French Indochina. Japan moves its fleet into position (two task forces) and its planes also, probably for a major J2 assault. Japan seizes 34 IPC.

The British empire reels from the loss of its ‘next to Britain’ fleet units, all but one transport are gone. Britain buys a few new ships and decides to attack the western Italian fleet with a fighter, tac bomber, destroyer and cruiser. The carrier joins the French units to pick up the surviving planes as the Italian fleet goes down without much of a bang. British units take Italian Ethiopia and Britain sends its lonely transport west to Canada to go pick up Quebecan units. The others come east to join in the seazone where the new British boats are placed. Oh, and the RAF demolished a German battleship and cruiser by rolling three ‘3s’ in the first roll. Did admiral Räder not like that. Germany is all out. Britain now has 41 IPC’s.

Meanwhile in the Pacific theatre, the Indians buy a destroyer, a mech inf and an artillery and reopen the Burma road defeating the lone Japanese unit there. Sumatra and Java are occupied, Kiangsu liberated and the fleet rearranged to meet the coming Japanese threat. It looks like India (as I will refer to UK Pacific) wants to try to slow Japan down as much as they can. India picks up 24 IPC’s which they will need.

India’s friends from Australia and New Zealand buy a submarine and a mech inf. They land on the eastern half of New Guinea probably hoping to get their bonus next round. The planes move west and ANZAC picks up 13 IPC.

Italy buys a destroyer to bolster up its remaining fleet, takes Kenya, Alexandria and Yugoslavia and also takes control of southern France. 17 IPC’s for Mussolini.

The USA makes a pacific fleet buy, with two capital ships, switches around the pacific transports which now leave Hawaii stacked with 3 infantry, a tank, three fighters, three tac bombers and the Phillipines bomber. A destroyer is also placed in the Hawaii seazone to prevent the Japanese from getting crazy ideas and supporting those with shots on land. But in all likelyhood, the Japanese Solomon forces that could land on Hawaii are not enough to win. There are only two infantry and just four Japanese planes could back up an assault. Brazil turns US friendly and US moves up to 54 IPCs and expects to have a bonus next round and able to land stuff in Africa.

China buys two artillery and an extra infantry but fail to take Hunnan but do destroy the lone Japanese infantry there. Allies seem to try and pick off every small Japanese force in their reach. Hit and run tactics by the allies? China ends the turn with 16 IPC’s thanks to the bonus.

Since France saw its cash plundered by the ‘black hordes from the east’ they can do nothing but rearrange a few units here and there. The French fleet moves towards Egypt and its last destroyer also heads in that direction. Three infantry now stack Algeria awaiting Yankee reinforcement.

  • In the second German turn, Germany bought a small factory for Romania, another plane and tons of land units as much as its 68 IPCs would allow. Germany decided to invade the Soviet Union placing a main force into east Poland and token forces into Bessarabia, Vyborg and Baltic States. A German attempt to sink the newly formed small UK fleet ends in disaster as the Luftwaffe takes another one of its ‘incompetent Göring’ pummelings. The remains flee after one combat round. The question is, is Germany finished as an agressor in its western theaters, the answer is likely yes. They shall now defend their western realm whilst trying to pummel the Russians into submission. The Italians are ordered to bring land units over. The new Bulgarian infantry head for the eastern front and Poland also sees new Wehrmacht units pass. Germany now has 46 IPC’s and gets no more bonus for peace with the Soviets. It is also pointed out that since the UK forces attacked Japan there would be no US bonus unless US is attacked by Japan.

The Soviets buy more infantry, a tank, a few artillery and a mech infantry. Southern Iran is now an SSR, Amur is retaken with air support and two stacks are forming, one in Leningrad, the other near the Pripyat marshes. The mobile units can support both if needed. Bessarabia and Baltic States are cleared of fascist agressors and the lone fascist in Vyborg is ignored. Ominously for Germany, Soviet Union is now at 43 IPCs including a bonus. And since Japan doesn’t seem likely to press the attack in the east, the two Soviet planes there will likely return west next turn and Germany will have a tough nut to crack.

The game continues later, probably tomorrow. But so far, great fun and impressed with the whole setup.

Japan has ships in Z6 blocking the Korea convoy, so Russia only collects 40. Also, the US can’t activate neutrals while it is neutrral

  • It’s silly that Japan can convoy raid land-locked USSR. I prefered the old box system  :|

  • Why on earth did the UK attack Japan in the first round of the game!!!  I certainly would not have done that without one heck of a good reason…really opens the door for Japan to run rampant and now the USA does not get it’s bonus income…maybe I am missing something here…

  • How did the USSR take Korea on turn 1?  I thought they had to wait until turn 4?

  • @13thguardsriflediv:

Oh, and the RAF demolished a German battleship and cruiser by rolling three ‘3s’ in the first roll. Did admiral Räder not like that.

    No, he did not.

  • “The British empire reels from the loss of its ‘next to Britain’ fleet units, all but one transport are gone.”

I assume you mean the entire navy near Great Britain?  If so, how did the transport survive?  If the Destroyer is killed then the Transport died.  This happened to me last night except one cruiser survived.

He mentioned devastating losses to the luftwaffe and a complete obliteration of the U boat fleet.  It’s plausible that in a battle the UK scored the final hits as they were sinking, leaving no attacking planes or subs to take out the transport.

  • Ah, I see there have been a few mistakes against the rules in the game played. They shall be retroactively corrected since they only affect the IPC totals and not the game themselves.

Japan lost quite a bit of its ground forces in the two Southern Chinese territories and even had to accept a loss of a plane or two. It was done to open up the Burma road and give China a chance at buying arty in R1 and 5 pieces in R2. Since sitting and waiting for Japan to come has never worked properly for me I’ve always gone for a ‘pick weak Japanese battle groups such as lone ships or lone infantry off’ strategy. And sometimes it works. Since the allies cannot take on Japan in force early on, the idea is to pick off weak spots and slowly give ground. Plus, I wanna see how this strategy works in global.

Ah okay, that thought hadn’t crossed my mind since in the dozon or so years of playing A&A I’ve never seen that happen in a naval battle.

  • Germany:
Eliminated the UK navy and built 3 or 4 subs a turn to 1) convoy raid the crap out of UK and 2) make the Americans spend a substantial amount of money to escort their transports.  Attacked Russia turn 4, got some bad rolls, but with America still unwilling to step within range of German and Italian subs Germany is simply outspending the Russians into extinction.

    Italy:
Colluded with Germany to grab Gibraltar turn 1 and close the Med.  Plowed through the UK and got almost to South Africa.  Got a few infantry up through the middle east into Russia.  Making 36 IPC’s a turn (including bonuses) which is going to a small force to hold North Africa and Gibraltar and the rest submarines.  Has been constantly attacking American naval builds off the east coast.

    Japan:
Attacked J3.  About to engage the American pacific fleet and should win easily.  China and UK are alive and well-turtled, ANZAC has some subs running around convoying.  Doing well.

    UK:
Dead-to-rights.  Being convoyed for 8 IPC’s a turn off Scotland and UK, 3 more in South Africa and 2 in Canada.  The Europe side has only enough money for infantry in Africa to keep Italy from taking it all.  Pacific is better, but not by much.  Big infantry stacks in Burma and India are keeping the Japanese away but also lack any sort of offensive punch.

    Russia:
In trouble.  German rockets are taking 10-15 IPC’s a turn away from them and they are slowly losing territory.  Had to make some attacks with huge infantry stacks that went well, but extended his lines.  Germany is in between waves of tanks and mechs right now, so the front is fairly quiet.

    ANZAC:
    Its there I guess.

    China:
    See ANZAC.

    France:
    Who?

    USA:
Got brought into the war late, had no idea whether Germany or Japan was a bigger threat when they did get their bonus.  Had to spend a 80 IPCs to secure their Atlantic invasion fleet which still might be pushed right off Normandy/Bordeaux by a German land counter-offensive and sub onslaught.  Will probably lose their entire Pacific fleet the coming turn.

Axis look good, but they were looking better 2 turns ago.  Hard to say who’s going to win.

  • Titus, I really like the idea of Germany buying submarines because I have found them incredibly hard to kill. I would assume that any type of vessel that popped up in England would have been smoked immediately by those cheap 6 dollar submarines.  I also feel they might be able to make the Americans spend alot of money to defend their navy.
With the UK virtually penniless is there any reason why you havent attempted a sea-lion?  It seems like a later game sea lion against a weaker England could be a possibility if they are truly short of funds.  Rockets themselves sound like a good tech but I dont really get the AA50 tech.
I will get my game Friday and were are doing random for axis or allies but maaan I sure want Germany bad.

Britain buys a few new ships and decides to attack the western Italian fleet with a fighter, tac bomber, destroyer and cruiser. The carrier joins the French units to pick up the surviving planes as the Italian fleet goes down without much of a bang.

This is a REALLY good idea.  All these British units involved cannot be attacked (or virtually cannot be) before they make this move and of course the Italians don’t have a turn before this occurs.  This practically wipes out the Italian fleet without any effort or risk on UK’s part and when you consolidate the carrier and the planes with the French Med fleet Italy cannot effectively counter-attack this force nor rebuild its lost naval units.  Not to mention Italy will more than likely not be getting any bonus income now because they more than likely cannot take Egypt with their Tobruk and Ethiopian forces.

This almost seems like a broken attack of opportunity.  By wiping out those Italian naval units without a second thought as to the risk behind the attack it seems to knock Italy out of the game before they even get their first turn.  Even if Italy throws everything it has left after that at the remaining British and French units it will more than likely lose everything and leave the UK with a carrier with one or two planes left on it.  The end result is Italy with no naval or air units left and the British still having a presence in the Mediterranean.  This means Italy has lost the game already!  They will have no more than the income they can pick up from southern france and the balkan states and no way of getting to Africa.

If I’m playing as the UK I will do this move first turn every single game and there is no reason to use those units any other way.  This seems incredibly broken to me.

The Italians in Tobruk are stronger than the Commonwealth forces in Alexandria and Egypt.

Not if the Indian fighters shuttle over from the Pacific and the Brits fall back from Alexandria into Egypt.  By Italy’s second turn they’re confronted with 4 (counting the aussie) inf 2 art 1 tank 4 fighters and 1 tac bomber in Egypt. This is a borderline impossible fight for the Italians as it is, not even taking into account the fact that by all rights their navy should be sitting at the bottom of the Med.  Italy simply doesn’t have the strength to accomplish much of anything if the Allies expend even minimal effort to contain it.

Touche, but an Indian crush seems all but inevitable regardless of whether or not you have those fighters still in the Pacific.  I guess it’s a question of priorities for the Allied player.  Snipe a few extra jap inf screening the Invincible Japanese Air-Force or use them to lock down 50% of the IPC’s of the half of Britain that can actually accomplish something.

True, but keep in mind that an ignore Japan strat isn’t feasible anymore(thank rationality)

  • I agree, but I also think their are far more efficient ways for the Allies to slow the japs down ( chinese inf stack supported by a russian AA gun, australia banking its points for a few turns and then unleashing waves of subs into the pacific, backing up those 18 russian inf w/ a couple extra 3’s and 4’s etc etc).  Anywho, don’t wanna hijack this guy’s thread anymore :)
