    • RE: Cruiser Idea

What about giving cruisers the ability to transport one infantry? They weren’t used very often as troop transports but the Japanese did convert 2 cruisers into fast troop transports. Very heavily armed troop transports if you will.

      Just a thought.

I like your re roll idea. I think I’m going with scouting ahead/blitzing. If you don’t want to use a tank to blitz into a territory scout it with an armored car. Then mech inf and mech arty can follow through the “blitzed” territory and into the territory occupied by the armored car.

Have you thought about old Risk pieces for cavalry or are they from too far back in the timeline?

    • RE: Where to buy?

      @elkikko:

but is there any axis & allies with these units or not??

Go to historicalboardgaming.com and look on the left of the screen. Almost every A&A game is listed. Start clicking. You will be able to see all the units that come with those games. If you want a quick one box unit expansion, and you don’t care about historical accuracy, get a Risk 2042 set. They are not as hard to find as some of the other older expansion/variant sets. The units don’t look the best. Some are down right sad. Also the colors only match A&A Classic. Otherwise go to HBG and start buying the units you want to add to the game. It’s faster than hoping for deals on ePay.

    • RE: Improving Italy as a playable Power

I’m toying with ideas for faster games using older versions and more mobile units. The Italians factor into both of my current ideas. The problem is the Girl Scouts of America were a more effective fighting force than anything Mussolini fielded. So much needs modified to make them fun to play in most situations.

The idea of having a successful amateur army was a long dead concept by the time Il Duce took control. Yet there he was trying it. The game tends to reflect that. The problems which arise from having an amateur army are magnified when laid next to a professional army, I.E. Germany. The game reflects that as well. It just does so within the existing mechanics. You can’t always put someone completely inept in charge of Italy for the sake of accuracy.

With all that said I like what you’re trying to do but have little in the way of input. I’m in no intellectual Mecca and playing the latest versions of A&A around here is impossible. I tried to get a weekly board game group started at the local library. The fliers stayed up for a month. Zero phone calls.

I think Ray Harris’s A History of World War Two podcast works for a while. This is much less dry though. I love the podcast but I can only listen to monotone for so long.

I checked rolcogames.com and they have the same subs as the game crafter. Rolco says the subs are 1". I also recently ordered Risk 2042 from fairplaygames.com for $15 along with some other stuff. I want to try the hummers from the Risk 2042 set as armored cars. If you’re thinking about adding armored cars into your forces I’ll let you know how these work out for me.

PS the subs are on this page https://www.thegamecrafter.com/parts

Fairplaygames.com has very low prices on A&A compatible stuff occasionally. Currently Thegamecrafter.com has subs. They’re modern and 2+ inches so maybe not ideal. Those would look hideous along side the 7/8" Attack! subs.

    • RE: Realistic AAA and SBR

I’m not one for total realism in the game myself. There would be one outcome with each game. Italy would be no fun at all. “I’m making 3 infantry. My 3 infantry in Libya surrender. I’m tranporting 3 infantry from Southern Italy to Libya. I’m now deciding with all these ICs where to place my 3 infantry.” Maybe not the best strategy, but that’s not the point. Total realism would wreck the game.

I’ve just never been a fan of the SBR since winning a game by having the US build nothing but bombers 25+ years ago. Being able to make enough bombers to completely end someone’s production is not fun either. I realize there have been rule tweeks since then. Thankfully so. It still places a lot on the luck element. In the end I think the less SBR the more strategy that must be used to secure victory.

Also I have crap luck. There’s nothing like knowing for a fact you are about to lose at least 2 of your 5 bombers which have a 1 in 6 chance of being shot down.

    • Realistic AAA and SBR

I’m starting to think the most realistic AAA option may be to remove it from the ICs. It made noise and gave the population the impression of fighting back. Otherwise it did next to nothing over the cities. I’m pulling this from memory so I might have the date wrong. I’m pretty sure it was the night of Aug 15-16 1940. The Germans were cities in Britain at the time. For one raid they sent 235 bombers. British AAA threw 8300+ rounds at the planes. They shot down 2 and maybe damaged 2 more. My calculus is not up to snuff, so correct me when I say that seems like less than a 1 in 6 chance for each gun to get a kill.

The AAA in the field engaging dive bombers and strafing fighters did better than this for obvious reasons. Like the planes were much closer and the gunners could see them. The equipment used was also different. Dual and quad mounted full auto weapons increase the odds of a hit. I imagine if the big guns had hive rounds set to explode very shortly after leaving the barrel they would have a pretty good chance of success. When I say explode I’m not thinking of the flechette rounds often thought of when hive rounds are mentioned. I’m thinking of the Japanese San Shiki rounds. Those were cool.

Obviously the proximity fuse changed this but the were not being used early in the war. When they were first deployed they saw limited use. Basically if any dud rounds wound fall into the ocean or on friendly territory proximity fuses would be used. Eventually the Allies were stomping enough gut to not care. Proximity fuses saw use on artillery rounds and bombs, directly on enemy home territory. Since we are playing games which don’t start at the end of the war I think the 8300 shots for 2 kills scenario carries more weight.

I’m leaning towards limiting the amount of damage bombers can do on SBRs and decreasing the odds of an AAA hit during SBRs. Roll 2 dice and you have to get a 3 or less.

I have flags for the original 5 powers taken care of. Now all I need is flags for more powers and maybe more than just 12 ICs.

    • RE: Worth it or not?

Thanks for the response Chief. I’m not interested as a collector. Just wondering if from the standpoint of gameplay if it’s worth it. I have to keep in mind I’m in Romney WV. Thoughts tend to run as deep as the gene pool here. So the deeper the game the less likely I am to find someone to play with.
I’ve managed to find 3 people who like the occasional game of A&A in the 5.5 years since I moved here. Excluding students, but they can’t be stopping by the crib. Therefore the level of depth will probably be my deciding factor. No one here has commited to a game of Global with me yet lol. Thanks again for your input.

Thanks John. I agree. I just wish I didn’t have to leave so much lamination around the edges of the counters. They have 2 pieces of card stock with a third tiny piece sandwiched in between. This gives them a fatter center which makes them easy to pick up. The down side is they want to pop open hence the need for the extra holding power around the edge.

Actually this is a green project. I printed the pics on the back of a BS letter from the VA. The card stock came in the mail. Someone wanted me to buy a print of a very poorly done painting of a train. Much better uses for both pieces of material IMHO.
