    • RE: Modules for ABattlemap

      See the link in the first thread (Number 2. there):

      @HolKann:

      After messing up the map and the uploads, I’ll simply devote a little thread to the AA50 modules for ABattlemap. The goal is to keep the most up to date version in this post, and any bugs or changes that might be good can be reported here. I’ll try to look into them as soon as I can.

      Current version: 9th of January
      Currently working on: nothing

      To use these modules:
      1. Make sure you’ve got ABattleMap installed.
      2. Download the AA50 modules here.
      3. Use 7-Zip to extract the downloaded file (7-Zip is similar to WinZip, only better).
      4. Copy the 2 folders gained by extracting into your ABattleMap directory.
      5. Run ABattleMap and the 2 scenario’s should appear in the menu “new”. Click those!

      For the less adventurous: here’s a plain WinZip version of the modules.

      For those having problems with filesharing sites only: attached to this post is the 7-Zip version of the files. To use it: download the file, remove the last 4 characters (“.jpg”), then proceed with step 3.

      Have fun! :)

      PS: A big tnx go to TimTheEnchanter, CmdrJennifer, a44bigdog, Emperor Molari, jeffdestroyer and Stoney229 for supplying ideas, reporting bugs and sending through files to make the map better. Ofcourse, credit also has to be given to Atilla, the creator of ABattlemap and the first version of the AA50 modules.

      @Krieghund:

      The UK gets the AA gun, unless its capital is held by the enemy, in which case the USSR gets both the territory and the AA gun (at least temporarily).

      This is what I read from the rulebook.

      @Krieghund:

      Any time a territory changes hands, whether captured or liberated, any ICs and AA guns in that territory change ownership to the new owner of the territory.

      This is what confuses me a bit.
      Just to clarify: “New owner” in the given example (Russia recaptures=liberates PER from Germany) means “original controller”=Britain.
      So in the second when Russia liberates Persia for Britain ownership switches to Britain.
      Am I right?

      @a44bigdog:

      There is no agreement per say. Normal common sense dictates the losses in most battles. Sometimes someone will post an OOL (Order Of Life) for a potential upcoming battle. In large battles especially naval battles the defender will be asked to name their losses. The defender always has the right to say hold on I would have lost something different and the battle would resume from that point.

      Thank you. So i will improve my “normal common sense” and continue watching some forum-games in order to prepare for my first online battle :-)

    • RE: Anniversary Ed. Online?

      There was an early “development” version available via the forum at tripleadev.org

      Tripleadev has now moved to

      http://triplea.sourceforge.net/mywiki/Forum

      A new alpha is announced but not yet available.

      While waiting why not give ABattlemap a try? See first post in

      Additional question:

      Being quite new to this I watched some Play by Forum games.
      I see that normally each player rolls the dices as well for the attacker as for the defender and chooses the casualties for both. So the defender does not decide himself.

      Is there any rule or agreement behind this?
      I could think of an agreement such as “always take out the unit with the minimal defensive value” or “always take the cheapest unit” or something like that.

      I fully agree to that.

      @TimTheEnchanter:

      And even if I did care, I have to download and install a new application that takes up several MB, in order to save 300kb?  Somehow this doesn’t quite fit my definition of “better”

      Just to clarify:
      The download of the 7-zip program is only 917 KB. Once installed you can delete all the language files you don’t need and the program will take only 2 MB of your HD. So this is definitely no “bloatware” compared to some other packers.

      @TimTheEnchanter:

      Something tells me you mean kb, since I have yet to see a way to store data in .015 bytes on a computer.

      Lol, no, I really mean 221015 bytes. It’s just a matter of using “.” instead of “,” in Germany.
      So for Germans it is 221.015 bytes that equals 221,015 bytes you are used to.

      @HoIKann:

      Allright, WinRar is officially abolished in favor of 7-zip, tnx

      @a44bigdog:

      1 more problem. Quite a few people for various reasons can not download .rar files. I know it is supposed to be better and all that but .zip files can be down loaded on any Windows machine without having to jump through any hoops. I myself had to go get a time limited trial version of winrar just to download the maps and you can bet I sure aint paying for something winzip does for free.

      I recommend 7-zip.

      See www.7-zip.org

      You can decompress rar-files with it. The compression in 7-zip-format (.7z) may even be better than in .rar:
      So HoiKann’s files are compressed to 541.641 Bytes in .rar. The same files compressed in .7z only take 221.015 Bytes.

      And: 7-zip is free and Open Source!

      I just noticed the '42 scenario still has the turn order text from '41.

      I fixed this. Just download the '42 map from

      http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?g4ym2mdizje

      @risk:

      ahh i see…ok this is another thing that i understood differently, i thought that the ‘sneak attack’ was a special attack that only happened ONCE during the entire battle…wow this makes subs very powerful. can anyone else verify that this is the case?

      sorry a44 its not that i dont believe you its just more reasuring when other people also chip in :D

      Just take a look at the official FAQ/Errata at

      http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=ah/article/ah20081212

      It’s the last question in the “Submarines” section:
      Q. Does a submarine’s Surprise Strike occur in every round of combat if there are no enemy destroyers, or only the first round?
      A. Submarines get a Surprise Strike in every round of combat in which no enemy destroyers are present.

    • RE: Help with ABattlemap

      @TimTheEnchanter:

      Hmmm… it appears that the image was converted to jpg and the quality seriously degraded when I put it on aycu.  I’ll just attach the bitmap file.  I’ve added the extension .txt to get it to load on the boards, just remove this extension from the bmp file and it should work.

      When I download your file and remove the extension .txt the bmp looks like this:

      http://i43.tinypic.com/xd6y3o.jpg

      It’s the same with HoiKann’s pics (post before):

      http://i40.tinypic.com/672qvc.jpg

      What am I doing wrong?

    • RE: Modules for ABattlemap

      I like the standard ToolPieces.bmp better than the BigPieces. On my large 1920x1200 screen the big pieces do not improve.
      What makes ABattlemap with ToolPieces.bmp really comfortable to me ist the Windows tool magnify.exe.

      Just take a look at

      http://i43.tinypic.com/2ns6xxt.jpg

      to view a screenshot of my settings. Please note that I had to reduce the size of the picture to 1600x1000 due to tinypic restrictions.

      With the help of this tool I have a complete overview and gain a brilliant view to the place where the action is or where I want the action to be ;-)

      @Krieghund:

      @TexCapPrezJimmy:

      1. 1 Sub vs. 1 Sub: How the heck does this work.

      … If not, the attacker fires.  If he/she hits, the battle is over.  If not, the defender fires.  If he/she hits, the battle is over. …

      I’m completely confused now. On page 30 of the rulebook is stated “If both players have submarines, all the submarines get to fire a surprise strike before taking casualities”.

      So up to now I interpreted this as follows: If as well attacker as defender decide not to submerge, both fire their surprise strike “at the same time”. So why should the defender in this 1 Sub vs. 1 Sub situation take his sub as casuality before firing his surprise strike? Am I wrong?

    • RE: Just How Old Are We Axis and Allies Players?

      AA50 is my first A&A game so I’m really new to this.

      Having some experience playing Hearts of Iron and HoI II on my PC it was time to find a WWII board game to play with some friends at home.

      It is really great  :-)
