    • [Noob] Playing with tournament rules : CP advantage?

      Hey everyone!

      We haven’t played AA in months, if not years, and decided to play AA-1914.

      We played a total of 3 games (the latest one being today) this Summer.

      The games have been great experience, and reignited our love of Axis and Allies. We plan on playing more!

      We love the 2 movement for land units, which allow for a faster pace. We enjoy the 1 turn attack/contested territory mechanism… However, after our third game today, I feel like the CP are too strong (with the tournament rules). The ability to move troops by 2 instead of 1 allow Germany and AH to funnel so much troops toward Russia and it feels like there aren’t any counterplay to a crush Russia first…

      After reading a little on the forums, it seems like the Allies should be stronger… So either the allies are making dumb moves, the CPs are lucky with the dices, or the allies are giving up too early.

      In all 3 games (rush Russia + stall the western front), without optimal purchases/moves (assuming those exist), the Allied felt the game was quickly out of reach. Some common points :

      • Russia always fall due to Political collapse. In our last game, Russia fell as quickly as turn 3 with the political collapse rule. In our first game, Russia turtled and died. In our second game, Russia turtled and tried to push back, and died. In our third game, Russia decided to hold his territories, and died.

      • Italy is useless, or not very usefull. Italy tries as hard as he can to hold Venise and can only survive because AH decided to kill Russia. AH matching Italy reinforcement and sending the rest toward Russia and it feels like Italy CAN’T punish AH. France usually has his hands full trying to take back his territories

      What should Russia do? Concentrate troops in Poland and taunt the Germans? Abandon his frontier ? Should Russia invade Ottoman (contesting Mesopotamia and having British troops take over from there)?

      What should Italy do? What can Italty do? Bring back the 2 troops he has from Africa? Send them and help UK contain Ottoman?

      Would appreciated any suggestions (or links toward past answers)!

      Thanks 😄

      Warning : long wall of text about today’s game.
      Today’s game was a rollercoaster of emotions :
      AH first turn : Attack on Serbia and Romania. Due to VERY poor dices, both attacks failed. AH finished his turn by moving most of his troops to Galicia.

      Russia (turn 1) : Feeling that the RNG is with us, Russia launched a small counter-attack with his troops from Sevastopol killing some AH units, but failed to take the territory. Russia concentrated his troops in Poland. This is where Russia made a CRITICAL mistake. He moved some troops in Ukraine, in reach of AH own troops.

      Germany (turn 1) : This was probably the worst German turn in a long time. Never have we seen dices being so bad…
      Germany FAILED his attack on the UK navy. He rolled 1 hit on his first turn of combat, and received extensive damage.
      Germany failed his attack on the UK troops in Africa (again, a mistake : it’s probably better to just hang around, without engaging UK). Germany decided to engage Poland with his troops from Prussia and Silicia. It was a massacre for the Germans. The dices were unfavourable and Russia rolled extremely well, inflicting SEVERE damage to the infantries of Germany without sustaining much in return. Germany’s attack on Belgium and Lorraine were pretty bad too.
      Germany ends his turn by moving most of his troops toward Russia, and hoping that he has enough to hold France a few turns.
      Things were looking really good for the Allied forces. The only good battle from Germany was sinking the Canadian navy.

      However, on turn 2, AH spotted Russia’s mistake and sent his entire army there to crush the small Russian army in Ukraine (maybe 8 troops?). The game was pretty much over then for Russia. We read and re-read the rules and knew it was over for Russia. AH, on turn three, would only need to attack Moscow and even without taking it, it would be a political collapse.

      So CP had terrible rolls on their first turn, but due to 1 mistake, Russia was gone from the game on turn three. We were pretty salty… (I was on the Allied team).

      The allied felt the game was desperate and decided to try to bring Ottoman to a political collapse with daring attacks on 3 different territories (with 1 italian transport and British troops from Persia + Transjordonia but failed). Mesopotamia + Ankara were successfully contested, but Smyrna survived UK attack and killed off all of his troops. The Allied conceded the games. The troops that crushed Russia were already on their way home. AH took the glory of claiming Moscow. Germany captured only Poland and kept 2 infantries to steal whatever they could. The rest of their troops were already backtracking toward the western front.

    • RE: Ongoing Global game! Some tips would be appreciated

      @WILD:

      So how’d it go, what did you end up doing?

      I listened to you guys and didn’t attack! Waited 2 turns and we ended the game on G6 or 7, I don’t recall properly!

      The Russians continued to back, and 2 turns later (G6), I attacked Russia with the Inf + Art group that were built in G1-2. Some tanks + mech joined the battle. Something like 16 art, 31 inf, 11 mech, 17 tank, 3 fighters 5 tactical 2 bombers (I decided to divert part of my airforce to punish a British + US mistake - my airforce was stationned in Leningrad, and there were many transports unassisted)

      I crushed Russia with around 10 tanks left + airforce. I crushed UK transport fleet. I blocked US fleet inside Norway/Danemark (he went in) by retaking Danmark.

      Overall, I won, because I waited for the additional inf + art 😮 (Russia only built Inf this game, was that a mistake? He only fell back, and never counter-attacked)

      edit : Going from my memory (Saturday feels so farrrr), here is the big battle for Moscow :
      Germany :
      31 inf, 16 art, 11 mech, 17 tank + 3 fig, 5 tac, 2 bomber

      My numbers are probably a little bit off…

      vs
      Russia
      61 infantry, 8 art, 3 mech + starting offensive units… (1 tank? 2 fig? 1 tac?)

      After my victory over Moscow and the Atlantic fleet, the allied surrendered. Japan was also at India’s doorsteps, but was far from taking the last remaining Victory city

      EDIT #2 : What happens to Mongolia rule when Russia capital is taken? Do the Mongolians still spawn if Japan decides to attack?

    • Ongoing Global game! Some tips would be appreciated

      Hey everyone!

      Today, me and my friends will resume our game from yesterday.

      It’s the beginning of Turn 4 with Germany. There is a Russian stack of around 29 infantry, 2 art, the starting aircrafts from Russia.
      A possible counter attack of 10 infantry, 2 tanks and some mech is possible from Russia.

      I have an army of around 17 infantry, around 16 tanks and a few art. I didn’t expect his army to stay so I didn’t position my planes properly. I think only 2 bomber can reach this army.

      Should I launch an attack on it? (Knowing that there will be 10 inf + art + tanks + planes that will be able to retake it, assuming a Russian Counter attack). It feels like it is a good opportunity to deal some serious damage against Russian defense… The North of Russia will fall (With the Army from Leningrad). Ukraine is mine this turn. There will also be a small army from the South (since Russia evacuated everything).
      12/18 infantry from Soviet eastern territories are walking slowly back to Russia. they will not make it before many turns.

      The cons I see are : My Infantry stack is LOW. I will lose tanks (in the attack, or in the counterattack). My aircrafts are not in position.

      Here are my purchases
      G1 = 10 infantry (they moved toward Russia)
      G2 = 9 art + 11 infantry (I moved only 5 infantry + 9 art toward east, the 6 remained to defend Europe and Italy… UK + USA only have 3 transports and will not threaten me on their turn 4 since they moved into the MED) Italy never got big this game, so Italy is spending all of its ressources into defending Italy + Southern France.
      G3 = tanks (I plan on moving all of them toward Russia).

      Thank you for your inputs 🙂

      @wittmann:

      It is probably better balanced playing te second edition, as Japan had lost about 8 Air units. If you can download the rules and set up, play with the newer ones.
      Have fun.

      Thank you, I will start printing the rules/setup^! (found here : http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=28703.0)

      A really quick question!!!

      Is the second edition the standard rule for Global play? Me + friends are meeting up to play, and this is our first global game in years… (I have the first edition game).

      Thank you!

      Hey!

      Anyone would be interested in playing a game of 1914 (ou 1940/50th anniversary)? I have all the game (but you can always bring more units or chips!!), and we could meet up in a local store (my choice would be Le Valet de Coeur, near Mont-Royal métro). I was thinking of a game this Tuesday 18, or Thursday or Friday 20th-21st

      About us :
      Me : Grad student in Philosophy, looking for a job as a teacher in a college

      My friend #1 : PHD student in Ancient history (Roman/Byzantine empire)

      Friend #2 (currently in Ottawa, but will come to Montreal from time to time) : completed a degree in Linguistic, last year in Law School

      Friend #3 : grad in Philosophy, work as a teacher, college level.

      • other friends who are university students (Graduate or PHD), some already found a job. We can speak English, but French is preferred for the friendly insults and other historical jokes 🙂

      @Krieghund:

      @anoid226:

      The rules state that units being loaded onto a transport “must use their entire move to load onto and/or offload from a transport.” A fighter’s move is 2 spaces. Does this indicates that fighters cannot move 1 space into the coastal tt, then use the remaining 1 space of their movement as their “move” onto the transport?

      They cannot.

      @anoid226:

      Like tanks in the WWII versions?

      They can’t, either.

      @Quintus:

      Also can land a plane on a transport if the transport is not on the coast, but still 2 movement spots away?

      No.

      In other words, you can’t do this :

      Turn 1, build transports with British empire
      Turn 2, move troops into transports to land them in Europe

      ?

      @Gargantua:

      USE THE ALPHA 3.9 RULES FOR EUROPE - They are substantially better.

      Everything works properly and is covered by Alpha 3.9, with 3 exceptions.

      1. France starts with 2 less IPC’s (17?) becuase French-Indo-China is not included
      2. Russia gets + 9 IPC’s a turn from it’s eastern territories
      3. USA only collects NO’s represented on the European side of the board

      Don’t ask me why Krieghund/Larry thinks it’s ok to give Russia + IPC’s from other maps, but not America or France. 😛

      They’re response so far has been that ‘somehow’ it makes sense.

      Any link to the ALPHA 3.9 so i can use it next time? 🙂

    • URGENT : A game today, but still a little bit confused about the setups/rules…

      Ok, so I haven’t played AA in a long time. Been going through the forums for a while

      1- It would appear that there are NO alpha or whatever rules for Europe 40 only, is that correct? So the rules insde my box are correct?
      2- Still, many people are talking about Alpha2/3. Are we talking about units placements too, or just the rules from these alphas?
      3- Stick with the box rules/placements? Or should I use some of the new rules for balance sake?

      ty!

    • RE: AAG40 FAQ

      Got a few quick questions, sorry didn’t read all the 100 posts 😞

      1- Can you send ‘infinite’ number of plane to attack a territory, a sea zone if there is no landing room EXCEPT for 1 carrier. Basically, this allows US or Japan to launch very powerful attack (while losing most of their air force). For example, can you attack a seazone  with 10 fighters, but only 2 can actually land on the Aircraft carrier?

      2- Technology and UK : Will a technology breakthrough be shared with Europe and Pacific UK?

      3- Germany and Italy OIL NO. Is the OIL NO (persia, east persia, iraq etc) shared with both Germany and Italy? In other words, if Italy controls, say Iraq, does it also give +2 to Germany?

      4- (Not very important ^^) : Say Germany or Japan gets a REALLY BAD turn 1, will you continue to play, or just reset the board? Last time, on G1, I failed to sink Canadian navy with 2 sub, failed my attack on BB + Cruiser, failed attack on France (France survived!) and Normandy. -.-
