      @Flashman:

      Suppose a set of 4 dice, one for each season, with various weather types ranged accordingly.

      that would be sick!, idk enough about what weather effected the battles though. Also wouldn’t you need separate dice for different climate zones. Obviously the middle east and Africa have different weather than Europe. An even with in Europe weather is different. Also gas clouds from chemical weapons could limit viability like fog and smoke, not to mention actually burning soldiers eyes.

      Also what about chemical weapons used at sea. I have never heard of its use, but its been theorized, and modern navies run drills to be prepared for it.

      @Jermofoot:

      Lincoln didn’t go to war.  The South did explicitly over slaves.  So Lincoln did the most logical thing facing an adversary with a very high population of slaves.

      Slavery was coming to an end anyway.  The US was one of the last remaining places to still condone it (hence the South splitting to preserve that ability).

      The South was fighting for political independence from Washington, if Lincoln hadn’t ordered a violent suppression of the rebellion there would have been no war. The South’s goal was not to conquer the North, they wanted simply to maintain their own independence, much like the Colonists were not trying to conquer the British Empire, they just wanted independence from British rule.

      You make a good point that slavery was coming to an end anyway. So why fight a war over something that was about to be resolved? Perhaps Lincoln( and his backers) had other motives and saw their chance at giving a moral spin to the war slipping away, perhaps there were other state rights issues besides slavery that gave the South reason to secede.

      @MrMalachiCrunch:

      Strange that the ‘right’ to own slaves was not listed as a reason for the US civil war.

      Here is a quote from Lincoln describing slavery as a means to an end,
      “If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union.”
      So for Lincoln ending slavery was not about human rights, but more about maintaining control of part of his domain. And how did he “save the Union”, he waged war against the states. That kinda reminds me of that quote from an American in Vietnam “We had to destroy the village in order to save it.” If you look up Section 3 of the Constitution, you will see “Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them”. So you could say Lincoln was literally a traitor.

      If Lincoln was serious about ending slavery, wouldn’t he have just taken the money he ended up using for the War in order to buy all the slaves freedom? Surely that would have only cost a fraction of what the war cost. Wouldn’t that have been more humane? Why did most other nations end slavery without using it as a reason to start a war? I am not saying the North or the South was right, they were likely both wrong, but to ignore these questions wont make them go away. Maybe A&A.org is not the right place for this, but the best way to honor the dead is to discuss why they were fighting so their sacrifice is not in vain.

      Well I am sure it will be a cool game, but I was thinking instead of just one cruiser type piece you would have battlecruisers and light cruisers. Especially if your gonna have multiple types of infantry, artillery and aircraft.

      @LHoffman:

      Second, it would be economically impossible for 90-95% of southern states to sustain themselves outside of the United States. The only one I know that could do so is Texas… maybe Florida. Texas has something like the 12th largest GDP in the world; equivalent to India and your very own Canada. Anyway, I digress… suffice to say that secessionists are blowhards and it will never be a reality anyway. Unless of course the US economy totally collapses due to the national debt and society breaks down… which is a distinct possibility.  :-D

      Without the federal income tax, national debt, and fiat currency, wouldn’t each individual state have much stronger economies?

      @Gargantua:

      IN MY PERSONAL OPINION: The best way to commemorate this event, would be to start another civil war, based on the same core principles as the last two. Even Thomas Jefferson would agree with me.

      Naturally, a bloodless “quiet revolution” would be preferrable but lets face the facts that it’s much less likely.

      I 100% agree

      or maybe Middleton wasn’t in the hospital for morning sickness, or maybe something else entirely. If you believe that Saldanha killed herself because of a prank, then why not believe in Lizard people? Each belief has equal amounts of evidence, that is none.

      If Saldanha killed herself as a result of a mental illness, and this was the “last straw”, then please someone link an article that shows she was mentally ill. So far, I cant find one article with the slightest bit of evidence that she was mentally ill.

    • RE: Are we too SOFT as a society?

      @MrMalachiCrunch:

      Now as to a nefarious reason for her death.  My question would be: “Why have her killed over such a minor but embarrassing mistake”?

      There is a lot that is unknown about this story, and so there may be many reasons to have her killed. There is little incentive in the media to investigate the truth, most people are content with believing fairy-tales about how an otherwise exceptional nurse killed herself over a prank. Therefore, I doubt it will ever be known by the general public how Saldanha died. My point is that what has become soft is peoples brains. People believe what they are told, even with no evidence.

      “in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation.”- Adolf Hitler

      If she was killed I agree it is unlikely it was because of the prank, rather the prank was a cover.

      @MrMalachiCrunch:

      If this nurse did commit suicide over the shame of being duped then I would characterize that as an abnormal response.

      I agree. However, I disagree with the thinking: due to Saldanhas alleged mental illness she committed suicide, thereby proving the existence of her mental illness. That is about as circular as they come. No evidence that she was mentally ill has been put forth, therefore any claim that she killed herself over a prank should be viewed with suspicion.

      I have no qualms with the DJs, thats freedom of speech. Of course all the media is going to talk about is whether they should be locked up. Forget about any kind of serious investigation into whether Saldanha was mentally ill.

      Sister In-Law:“It is hard to believe Jacintha could commit suicide as she was not the type of woman to do it.”

      “British media have termed Saldanha’s death a suspected suicide. Police, ahead of an autopsy next week, say it remains unexplained but is not being treated as suspicious.”

      So the media says its a suicide, the police say it is unexplained but not suspicious…. now that’s suspicious.

    • RE: Are we too SOFT as a society?

      @MrMalachiCrunch:

      Or…. you have a mental illness.  I think its a tautology to say people who commit suicide have a mental illness.  We can list all the rational ways people should cope.  But there are some people with mental illnesses that are barely keeping it together.  I would imagine that nurse was one of them.  Only a crazy person would kill themselves and leave their children motherless because of a embarrassing situation at work.

      I think making crank phone calls to hospitals is a rather poor choice of humour.  The DJs might eventually be charge with making a recording of a phone call without the permission of the other party (then broadcasting it) which is pretty standard law with most countries I would think.

      I don’t think mental illness is the only reason people kill themselves. What if someone is in intense physical or emotional pain? Just because someone has emotional pain does not mean they are mentally ill, often times people have very good reasons to feel emotional pain. Or perhaps think of Erwin Rommel, he committed suicide out of pure reason. He avoided trial, received a state funeral, and his family avoided persecution and received all his military benefits. Furthermore, I have not read any evidence saying Saldanha was mentally ill, so that is quite a judgement to make about someone without evidence. From her picture, she looks very put together though maybe a bit too serious.

      http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/07/jacintha-saldanha-dead-hospital-receptionist-kate-middleton-prank-call_n_2257883.html

      This article says she was “an excellent nurse and well-respected and popular with all of her colleagues”. That does not sound like someone who is soft or mentally ill to me.

      PS: Maybe the husband didn’t tell his sister that his wife had died from suicide because he does not believe she did.

      Here is a recording of the prank call. http://www.heavy.com/news/2012/12/jacintha-saldanha-kate-middleton-prank-call-suicide-dj/

      First off, I don’t see what is so embarrassing about it. Secondly, do we even know if Saldanha was the one answering? I think it could have been any lady with a good Indian accent. Thirdly, she left behind what looks to be a nice family. Yet I don’t hear anyone in the media suggesting the possibility that it was not a suicide. Should we really accept the official story?

      Is society too soft and/or stupid? Yes.

      My gut reaction, however,  is this story has less to do with a “soft society”, and more to do with tying up loose ends :-o. Its already odd that Middleton was hospitalized for morning sickness, and this just makes the story even stranger.
