o, u read lewrockwell.com too. I mean get rid of all holidays, people should be allowed to work/take off any days they like. Personally I cant stand presidents day, and find it hilarious how people hate their current presidents, but somehow think that past presidents were better. Most of them were crooks (particularly Lincoln).

RE: World War III: 2015
That CHAMP missile is pretty bad ass, how do you think it could be represented in A&A? maybe as a counter to SAM sites or Hackers? Also do you have any ideas for satellite rules?
BTW new Hacker ability
Hack Communications: Hackers can roll to see if they can move enemy units, possibly getting them to participate in an attack on their own forcesAs for motivation for the war starting, I imagine the two sides are fighting over the domination of fuel resources in Asia and Africa, debts owed, as well as to distract their citizens from economic troubles at home. It probably starts with some incident in the Persian Gulf. I’ll work on the story after I do some more research, any ideas?
Here are some ideas on the starting IPC values for each power
China: 40
United States: 30
Russia: 20
India: 20
Japan: 20
Brazil: 10China start with lots of infantry, the US dominates in naval and air power. Why does China have a larger economy than the US? because in real life it does, and more so by 2015. The US economy is based on services, consumption and debt( with much of that consumption and debt made possible by China). That type of economy would collapse during wartime and have difficulty replacing losses.

RE: Potential Flashpoint for Internatinal Conflict
Iran could be a player, but Brazil would have a higher IPC value than Iran, and what makes you think Brazil has a weak military? For Europe, what if France was made a player, UK was controlled by US, Germany would be pro-Russia and Italy pro-US/France? I suppose I feel Europe is more split politically than you do.
here are some stats on military spending
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expendituresI started a new thread to discuss this in the variant section

RE: World War III: 2015
Unit Types
Naval: No Battleships, subs and AC have conventional and nuclear-powered versions, for simplicity all surface warfare ships are classified as destroyers.Aircraft Carrier
Attack: 0
Defense: 3
Move: 2, Nuclear-Powered:3
Cost: 16, Nuclear-Powered:20
Special: 2 hits, can carry 2 fighters or dronesSubs
Attack: 3
Defense: 1
Move: 2, Nuclear-Powered:3
Cost: 8, Nuclear-Powered:10
Special: Stealth, first strike, can carry and launch one cruise missile.Destroyer
Attack: 2
Defense: 2
Cost: 8
Special: Anti-sub, AAATransport
Attack: 0
Defense: 0
Move: 2
Cost: 8
Special: TransportAir: I’m unsure which air units to represent since they’re are so many types.
Long-Range Bomber
Attack:4
Defense:1
Move: 10
Cost: 15
Special: SBRFighter
Attack: 3
Defense: 3
Move: 4
Cost: 10Drones
Attack: 2
Defense: 1
Move: 6
Cost: 6Air Transport
Attack:0
Defense: 0
Move: 5
Cost: 9
Special:Transport, may land in territory just captured, cannot attack into territory if it is transporting a tank.Attack Helicopter
Attack: 3
Defense: 2
Move: 3
Cost: 8
Special: can land in territory just capturedIntercontinental and Intermediate range missiles
Attack: 4
Defense: 0
Move: 1
Cost: 20 and 10.
Special: Range 8 and 4, SBR, one time use, cannot be intercepted, can choose target.Land: I kept land units simple because I feel modern warfare would be too fast paced for land unit to make a difference and since they are pretty much the same from WWII.
Infantry
Attack: 1
Defense: 2
Move: 1
Cost: 3Tanks
Attack: 3
Defense: 3
Move: 2
Cost: 6SAM sites
Attack:0
Defense:2
Move: 1
Cost: 10
Special: AAAHackers
Attack: 0
Defense: 0
Move: 2
Cost 10
Special: ?can SBR anything from anywhere?,lol idk?
Hack Communications: Choose one enemy unit within three spaces, on a roll of one you can move it in your combat phase and it may participate in any resulting combat against its own side.(edit)WMD
Bio Weapon
Cost: 20, only one can be built per game.
Special: only one bio weapon can be built per game. In the place production phase if any player has built a bio weapon they can place it anywhere on the map. They then choose between three options, add three bio counters to the territory the bio weapon is currently in, add 2 bio counters to any adjacent territories, or add one bio counter to any territory four spaces away. Where ever the last bio counter was placed is where the bio weapon is moved. The turn after the bio weapon has been placed the opposing side gets to choose how the bio counters are spread and this alternates until all land territories are filled with bio counters. A territory is filled with bio counters when the number of bio counters equals the IPC value of that territory. Each bio counter reduces the IPC value of that territory by one. What do people think? feel free to criticize.

World War III: 2015
empireman and I were disusing what a modern version of A&A would be like. Today warfare is very different from the days of World War II, but if the major powers of the world went to war what would it look like? could it be a fun A&A variant? I just wanted to put these ideas out and see if anyone thinks they are interesting.
2015: Due to inflation or a US default on its debt obligation, the American dollar ceases to be used as a reserve currency by Russia, China, and Brazil. Americans are enraged by their decreasing living standards, foreigners are blamed, violence ensues!
Revisionist Powers: Russia, China, Brazil
Allied Powers: American Empire, India, JapanMap: A&A:1942 size map, with more of an emphasis on Asia, and cut through the Atlantic instead of North American.
I am really interested in opinions of what units would be available in this game, since there are so many different kinds of modern weapons. Particularly, I am interested in representing cyber-warfare and other unconventional warfare methods.

RE: Unit Lineup speculation/wish list
My guess for art, tanks and fighters
Artillery
Attack: 2
Defense: 3
Move:1
Cost: 5
Note: no support abilityTanks
Attack: 4
Defense: 1
Move: 1
Cost: 8Fighters
Attack: 2
Defense: 2
Move: 3
Cost: 8I wish zeppelins and destroyers were included. Maybe they will be in a 2nd edition or pacific expansion. Also why no chemical or biological weapons?, not PC maybe
I hope Larry makes a Pacific map with Russo-Japanese and Spanish-American War scenarios. I remember reading France and Germany would have sided with Russia in the Russo-Japanese War had they not thought the UK and US would have sided with Japan. Who knows if that is true, but it would make for an interesting game US, UK, Japan vs France, Germany, Russia. Kinda like a modern version of Athens vs Sparta! -
RE: Potential Flashpoint for Internatinal Conflict
How do I get in on some ethnic cleansing? Will there be rules for that?
hmmm, I was going to make a joke about child soldiers but that might show poor tastes . At any rate ethnic cleansing is no fun , its too easy . How about biological weapons? viruses spreading around the map killing units and reducing IPC values?
To empireman,
I meant to say the map would be global, I just mean that it would be oriented more to Asia as opposed to Europe(as it is in WWII global A&A). And instead of the US being split down the middle, the Atlantic would be split. like this
Also, Brazil should be a 6th power on the Russian/Chinese side, giving the US an enemy in South America. The Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran are at each others throats( not to mention Israel and Iran) so the Middle East would not be its own power. Iran/Syria would be pro-Russia/Chinese, Israel/Saudi Arabia/gulf states would be pro-American. The EU is fractured politically aswell, by 2015 many countries may have left the Euro-zone weakening the EU further. I don’t think they would pick a side to join as a whole, some would be pro-American others would join be pro-Russia. -
RE: Potential Flashpoint for Internatinal Conflict
Things are slowly grinding towards a confrontation in the South China Sea.
The head of Asean has said China’s plan to board ships in disputed areas of the South China Sea could escalate tensions.
Cool, can’t wait for Larry’s new game Axis&Allies: World War III 2015!
Russia, China, Brazil(edit) vs Japan, India, American Empire, global map centered on Asia(edit), cut down Atlantic.
New Units: Hackers, Stealth Helicopters, and Drones

RE: Gold mine for new pieces.
Too bad Larry said the map only extends to New York and not LA. I was hoping for a Mexican player that could join the Centrals!

RE: Potential Flashpoint for Internatinal Conflict
look at China’s steel production, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_steel_production. In a long war China would rape.

RE: A movie about Hitler
Downfall is the best Hitler movie, but it only covers the last few days of his life.
I think a good Hitler bio would be very difficult to make correctly. Its not easy to know who Adolf Hitler was. I think making a film about him is important though because he was easily one of the most interesting and influential people in all the 20th century.
I’d like to make a number of points on how I think a proper Hitler film would be done.
1. It cant only be about how Hitler was a hateful racist who wanted everyone dead. Every eight year old can tell you that, and it would not make for interesting viewing.
2. It has to be a tragedy with Hitler as the tragic hero. This might seem distasteful because it perhaps would generate sympathy for Hitler within the audience. This, however is precisely the point as it is the only way to do justice for the victims of Hitler.
3.Hitler as a tragic hero does not make the film pro-nazi. He was an outcast, below average in many was, yet through sheer belief in himself reached the verge of global domination. He must be portrayed as inspirational.
4. I like Jens idea. Perhaps 1920-1940, the film could end with Hitler strutting around the Eiffel Tower, no need to see his downfall if by that point in the film the audience has a clear picture of who Hitler was, the rest is history.
5. The moral of the film needs to be something along the lines of, there is a little Hitler or Nazi in all of us. Throughout time humans have been drawn to worshiping one man as there savior, Moses, Budha, Christ, St. Paul, Mohammed, Stalin, Mao, the Kims, Saddam. No matter how modern/advanced/civilized a society becomes, critical thinking and constant vigilance is the only way to protect freedom.

RE: Most influential person of 19th century
@CWO:
If we take “the most influential person of 19th century” to mean someone about whom people are still having heated arguments today (like Karl Marx), here’s another nomination: Charles Darwin.
Darwin totally slipped my mind, I am changing my vote.

RE: Was the US a superpower before WWII?
I think a 1890-1905 geopolitical axis&allies style game could be really cool. The pre-dreadnought era may fit A&A gameplay even better than the WW2 era. Ships moved alot slower. No ideologies just imperial ambition. Lots of interesting wars/battles in remote parts of the world like the Russo-Japanese War and Spanish-American War. It would be interesting to see how a Pacific war between Japan and the US would play out during this era. Until they were defeated in the first Sino-Japanese War(1895). China had a sizable modern navy so even they could be an important power. The total lack of ideologies means diplomacy should be a factor and players should be able to choose there friends and enemies( and make secret alliances). Nations who were allies in the Boxer Rebellion were fierce enemies just a few years later.

RE: Eye or hand
you can wear an eye patch put a big scar across that part of your face and be cool.
Chicks don’t dig a guy with one hand.
This is correct, I wish there was still karma +1

RE: Music
Rap and Heavy Metal.
This poll is really narrow.
I don’t think I have ever listened to Christian Rock
What are some good songs in that genre?

Budapest, what should I see?
I am currently living in an apartment in Budapest, Hungary as part of a study abroad program and I will be here for the next four months.
I already have a lot on my plate, but I also wanted to incorporate some WW2/military history sight seeing into this trip, and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on where to go and what to see.
seeing the bullet holes in surrounding buildings reminds me everyday Budapest was itself a very significant battlefield, but I am also able to travel to surrounding countries and cities.
So if anyone has any suggestions, I am currently planning out my stay here. Also its difficult to get into the countryside since only EU citizens can drive cars.
Thank You,
