The cost structure and transport rules from 42.2 are the same as the global game, so if you ever want to transition to the global, 42.2 would be a closer match, though there are many more diplomatic rules, the carrier unit is very different in global (16 cost attack 0 defend 2 2 hits)    We found it for $42.

Bombers add counterattack but they don’t sit on the seazone and so they don’t defend you (except in the sense that they threaten whatever japan has left once its your turn).

In 42.2 (and 42.3) unless you kill Japan’s Java Fleet or it makes some serious money mistakes, it can build against you 1:1.  This means that if you buy subs or bombers (or other junk like transports that do nothing to protect your fleet in place) japan will have more hits on both offense and defense (its usually about 14 Japan Naval hits to 16-17 USA and allied hits if the allies play super-optimally) when we are talking about a face to face confrontation in a classic naval battle.

The USA is just really hampered here;  in 42.3 they need to spend 100% atlantic to even try the KGF.  In 42.2, they can buy optimally (bbs, dd, carriers and every fighter) and still only match, not beat Japan.

Many times whether the USA steps up on defense or it uses the bombers etc to attack, they lose it all during that fairly even battle and then Japan can do whatever it likes.  this makes KJF even more suspect, in these editions.

Interesting….I would say the other way around. Giving Allies a bid helps then from not getting rolled in 3 rounds. Seriously if you roll unlucky I’ve seen it look BAD on 2nd turn!

Aniversary Is cool to have but other than having Italy I just wasn’t all that stoaked about it. The sculpts in mine were really bad in alot of ways I ranted about this along with others when it came out . 1942 Second Ed is awesome and with a bit of tweaking you can probably get a better experience than AA50. HBG and FMG have a set of Italian minis and roundels you could easily use. As far as balancing goes you could simply combine Germany and Italy and simply use your Italian pieces in place of Germans where it calls for them or use some house rules.

You can get the Aniversary rules too but I’m not sure where.

While I might dodge some stones being thrown here AA50, was not a favorite of mine. For what it costs to get a copy it’s not worth it. There are a ton of threads on here as to how to make your own version of AA50.

Personally the attraction of this game for me was to have the game in my AA collection. I have all the board based AA games except for Guadal Canal and AAE40.
