A Future Candidate for UN Sec/Gen??

  • Saw El Presidente’ Jose’ Maria Aznar interviewed last night by Charlie Rose((‘Charlie Rose’ show.)

That show and another show today said Spain has 4 million new jobs, the best economic growth in Europe, and more investment in South America than any other country(not sure if they meant ‘in the world’ or ‘in Europe’ as I know Japan and US have a lot invested there.)

He has taken his country from socialist to centrist, and in so doing made it the growth market of Europe(Charlie Rose’ words.) I wonder if any countries with a sluggish economy will follow?

It was an interesting interview. The fact that he said he "is stepping down after eight years as El Presidente’ " before the election and reiterates it after the election shows him to be a man of new beginnings(something he also said of Pres. Bush.)

Pres. Aznar said his country had been fighting terrorism since before September 11, 2001.

He said UN Resolution 1441 says"this is your(Saddam’s) last chance. Show us your WMD’s weapons/programs and we will destroy them or else show us your records of destruction of the WMD’s. Saddam did not comply. The coalition did the right thing."

Pres. Aznar said “Pres. Bush did the correct thing. I will say something not PC(Politically Correct.) I hope that President Bush is re-elected.

Though I guess the world has a few dictators with a better chance than he has of being UN Sec/Gen.

  • I think Aznar is a badass… I mean, have you seen him? He looks like Count Chocoula. :P

  • muhahahahahahahaaaaa ….

  • Hey, considering what he did with Spain maybe King of Europe wouldn’t be a bad job!

Or would that be Emperor Napolean Aznar IV?

    Caesar Aznar??

    Woo-woo!

  • Considering he probably spoke of relative growth, it suddenly is not that impressive anymore

  • This isn’t impressive at all. Spain had little where to go but up. They’re still Portugal’s black-sheep cousin (and Portugal was a 3rd world country 19 years ago). It’s not like he took a “great nation” and made it “greater”. After all, twice 2 pennies is only 4 pennies.
Anyway, about the whole “fighting terrorists before 9/11” thing. BIG DEAL!!! Israel had been doing the same thing. So did every government of nearly every country in one way or another. Besides, this was an internal problem of Spain’s that still hasn’t been dealt with properly yet anyway (Basque - i.e. he should finish fixing his country before trying others). Also he’s not exactly a brilliant statesman when it comes to international politics. I’m sure there are a few Canadians who would happily oppose his nomination to the UN sec-gen (Brian Tobin in particular).

And the same could have been said about Canada when you speak of it’s economic growth.
