    • RE: Hmm little confused..

      Naval units can not attack land units and land units can not attack sea units.

      Land units on board transports can not fire. If the transport is sunk, the cargo is destroyed too.

      If an attacker wishes to launch an amphibious assault, and there are defending naval units in the seazone adjacent to the target land zone, then there is first a naval battle involving the naval units only. If the attacking navy survives, then it may unload the land units from its transports, and the land battle ensues. If the attacker has any battleships, they get a single support shot at 4 into the land battle. The battleship is immune to attack from defenders in the land battle.

      Planes and bombers are airunits. They can participate in the sea battle or the land battle, but not both. The sea zone and land zone are completely separate areas. So move the planes into the seazone to participate in the naval battle, or move them to the land zone to participate in the land battle. Just make sure they have enough movemnet points to get back to friendly territory during the non-combat phase.

      If all the factory pieces are used up, no more factories can be built.

      This is the same for all pieces in the game. It limits the number of separate units of that type each army can have. For example, each player has only 2 battleships. So at most each player can have 2 fleets with battleships in the game at one time. You can use the read and white chips to create 2 stacks of battleships, but you are always limited to 2 stacks.

      I hope this helps. Welcome to the game. I think its one of the best around.

    • RE: New player - Need clearing up!

      1. There are only so many industrial complexes, so after tehy are all bought, then you can’t buy any more?? So is it a good strategy to buy em quickly to prevent the other side from getting them?

      Yes, once all the factory pieces are used up, no more can be built. Whether its a good strategy to use them all up is debateble. They cost 15 IPCs each and provide no offense or defense ability by themselves. Your opponent can build units and just capture the factories they want from you. If you know that building factories is fundamental to your opponent’s strategy, then you maight consider buying them out.

      2. If i attack an island/coast with a sub, and transporter (w/ tank), and there are 2 infantry and a sub defending…. can the attacking sub shoot the land units? And if all the defending land units are dead, can the sub hold the island?? Or do the tanks just automatically take it?

      Okay, there are really 2 battles happening here, and not 1. First the Naval battle occurs. Only the units in the Seazone can participate. Units on transports can not fire. If the transport carrying them is sunk, then the carried units are lost too. Ouch!

      If the attacker destroys all enemy units in the sea zone, then the transports unload their cargo in to the land zone, and the land battle occurs. If the attacker has battleships in the seazone with unloading transports, then the battleships get a single shot at 4. The battleship can not be hit by defending land units.

      The sub is a naval unit, so if it survives the naval combat it can not participate in the land combat at all. If the attacker has planes involved they must be committed to either the naval battle or the land battle, but not both! Make sure you have the movement points to get the planes to the seazone or land zone for the battle and get back to a friendly territory to land.

      I hope this answers your questions. Just remember that the seazone and the land adjacent to it are completely separate areas, where separate battles occur. Naval units fight in seazones, then transports unload into land zones, to fight separate land battles. The only exception is the single supporting shot for a battleship to support an amphibious assault.

    • RE: What is so bad about taking Karelia in the first turn(s)?

      Okay let’s look at the numbers.

      Maybe the people I play against are bad, but if Germany takes out the British and American fleets what is so bad about hitting Karelia quickly?

      For example, 7 ARM, 11INF and 1 FTR against 11INF and 1FTR or 16INF 1ARM and 1FTR.

      In the first scenario, Russia has made a big mistake to leave 1 ftr in Karelia, because with only 11 inf Karelia is a deadzone. The only time this is okay is if Russia has placed a stack of inf, armor and ftrs in Moscow planning a counter strike to wipe out the German armor. Although to make it work Karelia should have about 16 inf on it.

      If you work out the number hits by averages for the second scenario you find that Germany will win with 4 armor and 1 ftr left. That leaves 4 armor dangerously exposed to a Russian counter stike. With the German armor destroyed, any German offensive is crippled and the game is essentially over on turn 2.

      Look what happens if Russia puts 18 inf and 2 ftrs in Karelia. By averages,
      Germany loses everything, and Russia will still have 1 inf and 2 ftrs. Germany has just lost the game.

      Against a seasoned player, Germany will lose the game in an all out assualt of Karelia on G1. It is better to just strafe Karelia to do some damage, and “rescue” the armor in Finland Norway. After 1 or 2 rounds of combat, withdraw to Eastern Europe.

    • RE: Need 3 more players for a 5 player, by email game.

      Okay, sorry Chris I’m an impatient bastard. Let’s start this game with Emu as Japan I will set the game up on Dicey, and then I will start 2 threads in the forum. The first thread will be the game log, and I will post all of the emails from Dicey in that thread to act as a running log of the game. I will start a second thread where we should discuss the game, talk trash, etc. By using 2 threads I hope we can keep the log clean and easy to read and follow.

      I will act as the banker and post everyones IPCs in the log thread at the end of each turn. Expect to receive an email from Dicey soon. I will post in this thread again when I have the game completely set-up to tell you what the names of the 2 new threads are.

      Thank-you everyone for joining this game. This is my first game of A&A by email. I think it is the first such game for many players, so we will work out the kinks together.

      Okay, great! We have heard from everyone except Chris. If Chris still wants to join the game the assignments will be:

      Russia = HortenFlyingWing (email ???)
      Germany = Zero ([email protected])
      U.K. = T.M. Moses VII (email ???)
      Japan = Chris (email for game ??)
      U.S. = Wild2000 ([email protected])

      The rules will be second edition. 1 hit battleships, Russia restricted, no bid.

      Horten, TM and Chris please give the email you want to use for receiving turn information from the dice server, and I will set up the game on Dicey or some other dice server if Dicey is still out of order.

      Thanks,

      Okay, so it seems the following people are/were interested in starting a email game:

      Zero
      Chris
      TM Moses ???
      Horten Flying Wing (wants free for all)
      Wild2000 (Does not want free for all.

      I think we wll not play free for all since it means we do not have 5 players. I would like to play 2nd edition rules with Russia restricted, and no bid. I would be happy to play Germany.

      I will send a private message to all the people who showed interest in this game some time this evening. People should start naming the country they want to play. First come, first serve.
      I take Germany.

    • RE: Britain or USSR?

      I don’t go for either. The real way for the Axis to win is not to capture an enemy capital, but to get the 84 IPCs needed for an economic victory. 8)

    • RE: Sharon started the second intifada???

      1. One Israel Defense Forces soldier was killed and another was wounded moderately by a terrorist attack near Netzarim in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday night, HA’ARETZ reported. Sergeant David Biri, age 19 from Jerusalem, was in critical condition on Wednesday and was pronounced dead in Be’er Sheva today from fatal head wounds.
      As a convoy of three civilian vehicles escorted by two military vehicles reached the Netzarim junction, three roadside bombs were detonated in rapid succession. The wounded soldiers were flown by helicopter to Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva.

      It’s not a terrorist attack if the target is IDF soldiers in my opinion. Calling strikes on military targets terrorist attacks makes the moral water muddy.

      Sharon did not cause the latest round of uprising, the Palestinians are just exercising their natural desire to be free of occupation by a hostile government that does not serve their interests. Would any of us not rise up if we were in the same situation?

    • RE: Games other than A&A (Blasphemy, I know)

      You might consider trying G.E.V. or OGRE by Steve Jackson Games. That’s the first REAL wargame I ever played (after Risk). Its quick and fun, but reasonably complex enough to make it entertaining.

      G.E.V is the souped up second edition of OGRE. It has more terrain and unit types to make the game more interesting. Both games are set in a fictional future. OGREs are massive tanks equal to an entire armor battalion. Very scary indeed.

    • RE: I have a big problem in the PACIFIC

      @chiefman21:

      I am with the US and Japan captured Hawaï and has 2 battleship on it. The Japan has a really BIG forces on Mandchuria, Kwangtung, French Indo China and India. There are manyyyyyyy infantries there and 2 planes+1 tank. I have 2 infantry on China + 1 plane and 2 infantry on SSinkinang. The Allies are strong in Europe. What should I do?

      Okay, This sounds like US turn 1. Japan went for Hawaii and India. There is some important information you left out.

      • Where is the Japanese Air Craft Carrier?
      • What did Japan buy?

      Here are some general tips.

      • Look for undefended transports. Attack them with the plane in China. If you attack transports in the Sea of Japan, you can land in Yakut to bolster the Soviet line.
        -Group all your infantry into Sinkaing. Conceding China to Japan.
      • Recommend to the Russian player that they send a few infantry south to bolster the Sinkaing line.
      • If all the Japan player has at Hawaii is 2 BS and a trans I recommend counter striking with you BS, transport, a W US fighter, and bomber.

    • RE: Take Hawaii

      Kurt is right, as Japan you need to watch out for Allied planes in range of the Sea of Japan. Even if they are there, it is usually sufficient to leave behind 1 battleship, leaving enough for a Hawaii victory.

      Personally, I like to attack the US fleet at Hawaii, and capture the island as well on Japan1. It makes a US counterstrike more costly for the US, and I have never seen the US take Hawaii back, so the troops can be hauled off to SFE, Australia, or Alaska on Japan 2.

      I have tried to find an alternate reasonable J1 choice, but it seems that its really hard to beat an free punch at half of the US fleet.

    • RE: Axis and Allies tool wish list.

      Okay so I’m thinking the first step is to simply display an empty map and give the user a way to move around and see all the map.

      Then I will add stickers.

      Then game tracking support (IPCs / Dice rolls/ tech etc.)

      Then Email generation

      The idea to integrate to the forum some how is intriging, but that would be a low priority in my book versus just plain old email generation.

      Thanks for the feedback guys.

    • RE: Axis and Allies tool wish list.

      I really need some help to define how fancy the user interface should be. Obviously the more automated it is, the harder it will be to create. It could just be an image of the map with “stickers” for the playing pieces, and the player has to manually move the “stickers” around to reflect the moves that happened. Or, the system could try to automate the moving of the pieces on the board, which would make the utility easier to use, but harder to write.

    • Axis and Allies tool wish list.

      Hi,
      I am planning to write a software program to help with A&A play by email games. I am starting this thread to collect your wishes for such a utility. There will not be any computer AI here. This will be a utility to help you play A&A with other real people by email.

      Here is my base list of requirements, please add your own suggestions:

      • Cross-platform (Write in Java 2 so it will run on Mac, Win, and Linux platforms)
      • Die roll management
      • System to prevent cheating, by players restarting their turns.
      • Generates and processes emails representing turns of action.
      • Automated/programmable casualty removal. There will be a standard order for unit type removal. Players can customize the order for defensive losses per area.

      Let me know what you want in this utilty, I will keep adding requirements as I think of them.

      I have a mac, and I have been toying with the idea of trying to write just such a utility program. I want to write it in Java though so it can work with Windows players too. I need to learn Java. I only am familiar with C and C++ right now. Maybe I will have something by fall time.

      I really need a super high resolution image of the board to use in such a utility. Somewhere around 100 dots per inch. If anyone has a scanner and can make such an image, I would be thankful for the help.

    • RE: Retreating - can troops do it?

      Troops can retreat, BUT only to an area which contributed units to the attack, and all units must retreat to the same area. So if units in A attack B. Then they can retreat only to A. If units from A and B attack C. Then they can all retreat to either A or B, but not both.

    • RE: Attacking sub withdrawl after a naval victory?

      okay, fair enough on the AAMG ruling. It does seems rather silly though. I mean why would the sub lose its ability to withdraw because it was completely victorious? I guess the crew stops the ship and throws a party, until the enemy planes show up ;)
