    • RE: Rob's Axis opening

Seems to me the allies are not acting in a coordinated fashion. You are playing both Axis countries so by default the Axis turns are coordinated. Your friends need to work together on common goals.

I also recommend more rotation of countries between players. Always playing Axis or one specific country leads to unvaried play. You need to experience the battle from the otherside to see the possibilities fully.

      Cheers!

    • RE: Question about overall allies strategy and the shuck….....

What is your game plan. What are your goals. How are you coordinating the 3 allies to achieve those goals? What are your opponents goals? How can you block him/her from achieving those goals? I am not talking about taking a capital as a goal. That is the end goal. I am talking about short term goals. (e.g, take and hold Western Europe. Hold the Yakut Sinkaing line against the Japanese for 4 turns. etc.)

What is your overall all strategy? Your goals are steps on the ladder of your strategy to victory.

When you can answer these questions, then you will find you will fare better in your games.

Lastly, be flexible. You will lose important battles. Plans will be countered. Be ready to adapt to these events. Balance risk of loss versus risk of gain. Retreat is often the best thing to do after a bad roll of the dice in a big battle. Reinforce and try again next turn. If you can’t wait for next turn, then you are being outplayed. Study and learn why.

      Cheers!

    • RE: "Sinkiang Speed Bump"

Am I imagining things or did you leave both India and SFE unguarded :o

This looks like a KJF strategy, with the US pumping 24 IPCs min per turn to the effort.

The Japanese advantage to exploit here is that the Allied forces on Sinkaing are from all 3 players. Together they are strong on defense, but on offense they stink because they have to attack separately.

Japan needs to play conservatively, and Germany needs to press Russia hard. Sending the Jap airforce to Europe to back German advances and sink Allied ships might be a good option.

I would build a JAP IC in KWA on turn 1 to pump out 3 ARM per turn. With 2-4 inf from the mainland a turn a steady pipeline can be aimed at Sinkaing.

China will be taken on turn 1 to Kill the US Ftr (Always!)

Other infantry will pressure Russia towards Yakut.

JAP and Germany will strat bomb the IC in SIN forcing the US player to suck up the damage or waste a build slot on an AA gun.

Early attacks on Alaska and German forces pushing from Egypt through Persia for a 1 to punch on Sinkaing will prove beneficial.

Sorry for the rambling. Glad to be bac after so long and see the site is still going strong.

      Cheers

    • RE: Attacking North Korea..(Suggestions)

      @Anonymous:

The real question here is why didn’t the US deliver the 2 light water reactors that were promised in the 1994 agreement to have N. Korea mothball its heavy water reactors?

Probably becuase North Korea never committed to their end of the deal either. :-?

How so? The reactors were sealed and guarded by UN troops and inspectors. The North Koreans complained that the light water reactors were 3 years late and no sign of them being started anytime soon. They kicked out the UN teams and unlocked the reactors. What part of this sequence is N. Korea to blame for?

    • RE: Attacking North Korea..(Suggestions)

I think everyone in the area would oppose a war. Especially South Korea. North Korea has a couple hundred thousand conventional rocket launchers aimed at Soeul. South Korea is not in the mood for war. It is in the mood for reconciliation. The real question here is why didn’t the US deliver the 2 light water reactors that were promised in the 1994 agreement to have N. Korea mothball its heavy water reactors?

I guess the N. Koreans are not allowed to have heat and electricity according to the Bush adminstration. Why does the rest of the world hate us? I keep forgetting.

    • RE: G1 vs R1

I have thought about reversing those two countries in the order of play, and I think it would be to powerful for the Axis. Germany would be able to take Karelia fairly strongly in the first turn, and Russia would be hard pressed to get it back.

I think a better solution to the imbalance is the starting position of the Russian and German forces. Without RR, Russia has 8 inf, 3 ARM and 2 Ftr able to attack Finland, EE, or Ukraine on R1. The German forces start spreadout in a very weak position relative to the Russia starting position.

I think the 5 Russian inf in Caucaus is a bit overkill. I would suggest reducing that number by 3 and moving those inf to start in Moscow instead. I would also reduce the starting number of inf in Karelia from 3 to 2, and move the 1 inf to start in Moscow. So now there are 2inf in Karelia and Caucaus, and 8 inf to start in Moscow for Russia.

I would also reduce Germany’s starting inf by 1 and increase Ukr starting inf by 1.

I think such a redistribution of forces might be able to balance the game somewhat and eliminate the need for RR.

    • RE: What Other Strategy Board Games Do You Recommend???

      @StrongBad1988:

most of them do look pretty interesting, but nowhere as good as good ol’ A&A. one that did look kind of intersting was barbarossa, i think that was made by the same guy who made settlers of catan, and it was best game of the year for 1988 or something. have you played that one yet zero?

No I haven’t tried barbarossa yet. I was lucky for a while I lived near to a guy that collected Rio Grande games, and we would play every other week. :)

Pretty much any game made by Rio Grande games is fun to play. Here’s their website:

      http://www.riograndegames.com/

Off the list of games they have I have played:
      Medina
      Edison and Co
      El Grande
      Tikal
      Fossil
      Kahuna

I liked all of them except Edison and Co which is a rather boring racing game of wacky machines. El Grande is a great area/war game that I highly recommend.

I’m not a great communicator so forgive as I lean on the better communication skills of others. The essay linked to below pretty much says everything I think and feel about Bush’s state of the Union speech. The author elquently points out several flaws in Bush’s logic that I for one would like answers to before agreeing that we need to go to war.

    • RE: State of the Union Address…

      Bad speech:

Domestic issues: He said what people wanted to hear, but his real budget shows different numbers. Unfortunately, most Americans are too lazy or stupid to read he actual plan and take him at his word.

Iraq: This is the same tired crap we have been hearing all year, and it still stinks. He failed to answer some key questions in my mind:

      1. Why only Iraq? There are lots of dictatorships in the world trying to get weapons of mass destruction.

      2. Why aren’t we still trying to capture Osama Bin Laden? Didn’t he promise to bring him to justice? He’s not trying very hard.

      3. What roles did key members of the US government play in bring Saddam to power and maintaining it through the inhumane means listed in Bush’s speech. In particular, how about full disclosure of the activities of Donald Rumsfield with Saddam during the Iran/Iraq war. If we are truly a nation that stands for freedom and liberty, then we should have nothing to hide right?

I also did not like the lies in his speech.
      1. He talked about homeland security, but his office is blocking funding of the bill that was passed by the Republican congress.
      2. He accused Iraq of torture, which I am sure they do, but he ignored the reports that Al queda prisoners in US custody are being “shared” with allies willing to perform “interrogation methods” the the U.S. considers torture.
      3. The UN team said that the Aluminum tubes they found were not the kind needed to purify Uranium, but Bush said they were.

Lastly, I despise politicians that invoke the name of God to back their entirely human agendas. Bush needs to read the ten commandments. “Thou shaly not take the name of Lord your God in vain.” Bush, presumed to speak for God, and that God supports his War on Iraq. Very bad form. Much worse than all the “God Bless America” signs on places of business after 9/11.

    • RE: A quick question

      @MajorC:

Im going to write some of this stuff down and try it…
I’ve got another quick question out of curiosity if that’s okay. When would it be worth invading a neutral country? You see I’m working on a new plan and I wanted to know if incorporating neutral territories was worth it. You have to pay 3 ipcs which could be better spent on infantry, but perhaps you could invade a neutral rather than do an amphibious assault… I dunno, just thinking out loud.

I have never done it myself. Some people however, like to pay for invading Spain or Peru. Usually its the allies invading Spain. By landing in Spain the Allied troops get an easy beachhead into Europe rather than trying to storm the German defenses in W.Europe.

Sometimes, If Japan takes control of Hawaii, the Japan player will land troops in Peru the following turn in order to capture Brazil from the US on the following turn by walking in from Peru.

Some people have suggested Japan Taking Mongolia to divide the Russain defenses, but its too easy for the Russians to just fall back as they normally do under Japanese pressure, and nullify any bonus given to Japan by controlling Mongolia.

      Cheers

    • RE: A quick question

Hmm… Bringing a force up through Persia is not a bad idea because it can force the Allies to split their defenses between Russia and Karelia enough that the main European force can take Karelia.

The IC in Lybia is a very bad idea however, because you will never get your money out of it. 2 transports will cost only $1 more. They can transport 2 to 4 times as much as the IC can produce. They can move, they can’t be SBR’d, and they can shoot back on defense.

      Here’s the recommended path.

      • G1 buy 1 TRN and 8 inf. Sink the UK ships at GIB using a spain sub and your bomber. Send 2 planes to kill the UK sub above Egypt. Send your sub and TRN from the baltic and 3 FTRs to kill any fleet at the UK sz. During Non-combat keep your BB, and TRN at SEurope. Bridge 2 INF from Seu to Lybia. Place the new TRN in Seu. You now have 2 TRN which is better than an IC for the cost of just 8 IPCs.

      • G2 load 4 inf and amphibuous assault both Egypt and Syria taking both. Bring your BB and be sure to take your free support shot. Bring planes if the UK reinforced Egypt on UK1. They can land in Lybia or FEA if you control it from G1.

With control of the canal, your fleet is relatively safe. You can now shuttle tanks and troops into Egypt/Syria/ or Caucaus every turn.

NOTE: On G3, with control of the canal you can send a transport to take both S.Africa and Madagascar if they are unoccupied by the UK.

      Game on!

    • Civilization

Has anyone else here played Civilization by Avalon Hill? No not the computer version, the original boardgame. Its very different from the computer game.

I think its one of the best games ever made. The greatest thing about Civilization is you play it and you say to yourself, “That’s a great game!”. Then you play Advanced Civilization, and you say “Man that Rocks!” and you can never play regular civilization again.

Anyone else try this awesome game?

      [rant]
Okay, so there was rioting in Oakland following the Raider loss in the Superbowl. Is it me, or has post game rioting become more common in the U.S in the last ten years? Its not always the losing team either, sometimes the winning team’s fans riot to show us how happy they are. :-?

I lose faith in the human race when I read about this crap.

Does anyone else on this site remember going to the arcade to play:

      1. pac man - before there was a mrs. pac man
      2. joust, dig doug, or asteriods
      3. or have any Idea who dirk the daring, space ace, or Qbert is/are??
      4. or just playing the pin ball machines because they were fun?
      1. Oh yes!
      2. Yep, all those too.
      3. and those.
      4. and those.

Actually I still own and use an Atari 2600. I am trying to write my own games for it. I’m not alone either. My other web haunt is here: http://www.atariage.com/

BTW: The Atari 2600 actually did not have pong as a game, but one of the the founders of Atari corp did invent Pong which was an arcade game, not a home console game.
