RE: Naval Units: what is worth buying?
CVs seems a powerful choice if you stack the with fighters, but once the fighters are gone…
…you buy 2 more for only 20ipcs and get 2x 3/4units instead of spending 24 and getting 2x 3/3 units which cant help out on the land after the sea is clear.
The AC doesnt just ‘seem’ to be a powerful choice in my mind.

RE: Air can't attack subs rule?
Since when did the submerge feature become manditory? This sounds like a house rule waiting to happen. I think this rule is so confusing to people b/c the defender has never NOT had the option to use a piece as fodder.

RE: Avoid China
So far by the accounts of people(s) that have played the game and are not just speculating, it looks like Japans intial low income dictates that they make bigger gains in the IPC deptarment, thus not to attack China.
The investment of troops and supplies and the meager gains from doing so at 1 IPC each TT look like they might have juicier targets. Then when finally you taken care of the targets in the Pacific etc. that get you gains thru NO’s you might consider coming back to China, but by then they might have enough Inf to discourage a Japanese player - the next logical step of thinking asks should you even bother when they cant even attack you anyways… ? -
RE: Will anyone be upgrading the Triplea….
TripleA is all about function before form, Ive loved using it to wage war against my friends. I get to play a free game b/c of the hard work of others, you cant complain about that. Props~

RE: Unit abilities
I would also add that countries that can afford such an investment, should probably make it. I think its close that they are relatively identical purchases for your money, but if you only make 30ipcs its not smart to spend 20 of it on one unit.
I think of it as the same level of purchase, the BB is for the powerhouses, and the Cruiser is for Italy and the UK etc…

RE: Avoid China
Hongkong is a 1 ipc territory. Not a very good spot to locate an IC for UK, imho.
Lol, I didnt check before I thought of a factory there, in that case the factory is off, +1 for leaving china to stew by themselves.
-
RE: Avoid China
Im sure at some point Ill be interested enough to see how avoiding china affects the game, for better or for worse. :?
The one thing Im thinking, can China take back HongKong and it will revert to UK control? If that is the case, I suppose the UK could buy a factory there after china has reinforced it with a dumpload of inf. making it a pretty nice fortress…
It all depends on the starting setup, if china is too well fortified, the ‘avoid china’ strat will be more likely, if they are weak like you guys have seen with the unofficial setup, then taking them out asap will be the better way to go. Its all speculation at this point…

Avoid China
Anyone think there might come a time when a strategy to avoid China completely may dominate? I havent read the NOs for Japan in awhile, Im sure this might stop them from grabbing +5ipcs… but from what I can tell China cannot attack any TTs that werent originally hers to begin with, so let them build up 4 infantry per round, who cares if you never intend to attack. Instead you can use those units that wouldve been bogged down there to invade india instead. Those chinese TTs are only worth 1ipc each anyways. I suppose someone will say the VC is important in there… hmmm.

VPs for AA50
I was just reading the end of this thread: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/341599
…and it got me thinking. There a lot of people that would like to see an even amount of attention to both the theaters of war, and I realize that the NOs are now an effort along with VCs to encourage such play… Im just wondering, wouldnt VPs be a great way to force the allies to spread their efforts in multiple directions instead of the standard KGF?
You could do VPs for the axis or allies as a group, OR you could do it as individuals - so if japan gets too large (left alone), it can win the game by itself so to speak… same goes for japan, they cant focus ALL their efforts on the charge to moscow, as the usa could steal all the VPs from the pacific…Just thinking out loud mostly ;)

RE: AA50-Is there something we're missing about SUBs??
Since nobody is ever going to buy subs as germany, maybe germany should get 1 free sub per round! ;)
As for subs not being able to be used as fodder, it doesnt make much sense, if you order a sub to the surface to fight the good fight, it should do as its told!

Two game changes
Two things that really make me curious are:
- How much will the no-fodder trannies effect gameplay?
There are some key TTs (territories) that make for excellent bomber bases to stop all unprotected tranny travel ie. France, Hawaii, Australia. And its not like you can just put 1 destroyer in the mix to protect a convoy. Unprotected trannies was just how the usa and japan did business, so now youll need to spend a significant? amount more to water craft (as usa and japan mostly).
- Turn order has been shuffled.
Now that germany goes first in '41, it sets itself up nicely for a 1-2 punch from italy - germany. The traded TTs that sit between germany and russia can now be breached by the italians, and the blitz thru by the german tanks/planes. And of the game tester try to exploit this yet?

RE: Techs
Ya that makes sense, why not just have HB not effective against ships(they switch back to regular bombers)? House rule I know, but seriously, high altitude bombers were no good against boats!
-
RE: Techs
Im a lil late to the party, so excuse me for just finishing the 17 pages of this thread now :P
One thing Im stil curious on is when dmg to factories is repaired. Is it repaired before you buy your units or after? So if you get bombed down to 1 production, can you repair 3 and build 4 units that round? I think this makes the most sense.
As for HBs, I think everyone may be going a touch overboard. Without playing this NEW GAME with these tech rules you dont really know how powerful theyll be, actually there are reasons why ‘winning’ HB in the tech lotto can be a bad thing and is prolly why Ive never tried for tech. If you get HBs you almost HAVE to make use of them and your whole game turns into a bomber-fest. I personally dont find that a fun way to play.
Plus, if the USA got HBs and kept buying and sending bombers to EU, maybe Japan has an even easier time to get its NOs and VCs? Id at least like to play it or hear from someone that has before I speculate on how powerful HBs are and if my gaming group will even allow them.
As for a recent question about why tech are even random in the first place, I have a feeling it has to do with fun factor, if you can go straight for a tech like in previous editions NO ONE EVER USES ANY OF THE ‘WEAKER’ ONES. So it always degenerates into a rockets/hb tech whoring game (read: no fun). Thats my take on it.
I have a feeling almost every country will spend at least 5ipcs in the first round on tech, should make for a different experience each game, I like.

RE: A thought regarding initial set-up
The first problem that pops into my mind is that, Russia is able to strafe and take a couple Germany territories on R1, inflicing more IPC lose to the Germans, if the Germans were placing first, obviously the front lines would be barren wastelands… maybe you should take away a certian amount of IPCs from the Germans to account for this, like maybe take off 15 IPCs since thats about an average lose on R1 or something…
-
RE: Strategy for Japan and how long does it take to drive to moscow.
Russians stacking in Bury on R1 are dead Russians. Thats the perfect opportunity to walk all over north Russia uncomtested.
My play group used to stack everything in Bury until it consistantly got wasted on J1 - now its a general rule that we pull everything back.
-
RE: How can I strafe?
As far as I know, strafing is just attacking for one round and then retreating so you dont end up in a territory youll get killed in next round. I suppose it could even go 2 or 3 rounds but the point is that before you win the combat, you retreat…
