    • RE: Games W/O National Objectives

      Yeah this is crazy.  The reason I ask is that the Origins/GenCon tournys are going to this format.  By observation it looks like Allies have a huge advantage.  Japan will not be able to produce the ICs needed to get to Russia w/o the NO’s.  It will take them forever!  I know the Allied bombing Strategy will be effective in the 41.

      In the 42, I still think that the Allies have a substantial advantage but not as much as the 41.  They still will have sea and air supreriority and with less pressure from Japan, Russia should hold fast and romp late in the game.

    • RE: Axis vs. Allies Records (League and Tournament - 137 games) - updated 7/12

      @squirecam:

      In AAR, the axis can win 40% without a bid. It just comes down to first round dice results in the applicable bid territories (Egypt, UKR, Belo, etc).

      As for obj/no obj, that is an issue. But the bigger concern is the allied bombing strategy. I dont think the no-obj game is as unbalanced with the CAP rule.

      It looks as if Origins/Gencon tournaments WILL use the CAP rule. So that should give out some good playtest results.

      I agree here, also, the question is what combination of optional rules with the base game will balance the game the best?  Only then should we add the bidding to the game to curb the rest if needed.  This may take another 12-18 months of game online and FTF by all of us.  It may be a long anaylsis.

      You have 2 scenarios and 4+ optional rules- that’s a lot a combinations to comb through.  + the bid.

      And yes the Allied bombing strategy messes things up a bit.

    • Games W/O National Objectives

      Has anyone played any games w/o National Objectives yet?  How did it change your strategy?  I would think that it would be radically different.   :?

      I am willing to try a 41 and a 42 game w/o NOs if anyone is interested (by forum of course). :-)

      @Imperious:

      what hype?

      we are the only ones hyping it. WOTC wont lift a finger unless people protest them and write letters complaining: “why don’t you freeking post some information on your own game rather than leaving all information up to funagames.com”

      LOL :lol:

      @zooooma:

      Or rather after the novelty of AA50 wears off, and we have played both set ups many times each, AA42 will be an interesting twist.  Why have steak every night when you can enjoy the occasional burger?  Variety is good.

      Burger???- no my friend- more like Alpo.  We’ll see if your “half glass full” approach holds up 6months after the game is out.  I predict people will be less bored with AA50 and quickly bored with AA42.  The setup will be very similar to Revised so it will not be that new, as well as the map and such.  By the way, get ready for the cheap cardboard charts! :-)

    • Will it live up to the hype???

      Just busted out my Revised board the other day.  Its been a year since I played Revised.  Haven’t been too interested in it since AA50 came out which I have played several games FTF and PBF by now.  I decided to set up the game with a couple of crusiers on the board just to get a “feel” of what the game may be like.

      I’m telling ya, I got a bad feeling about this game.  Especially after AA50, AA42 is gonna feel like refried beans.  After a short while the new artwork is gonna wear off and the product itself will probably not be that impressive- $25-$30 bucks- how much quality will come out of that?  If Revised had 370 pieces and it didn’t include crusiers that means you will be short pieces again! :x  Those “new” sculpts better be REALLY something special!

      Don’t get me wrong, I will buy it, its good for beginners and starters but compared to AA50, its definitely gonna be a letdown.  The Revised-AA50 hybrid ought to be interesting at first, but I’m just not convinced it will live up to the hype. :|

      Board Games

      1. Chess- “the game of kings and the king of games”- Ben Franklin
      2. AA50, AARevised (soon to be AA42), AAEurope/Pacific
      3. Settlers of Catan Series- all expansions- Seafarers, Cities and Knights, Traders and Barbarians
      4. Risk 2210, Mega Monopoly, Cards (various), Pool

      Video Games- don’t play much of these anymore- but I still love Madden and NCAA Football.

    • RE: Lets discuss Japan Round 1

      Good topic Squirecam,

      I definitely think #1 is the Brit fleet over the Chinese ftr because the ftr can’t fly out of China proper anyway.  #2 is Bury (because the main goal is always Russia), then #3 US fleet.

      My buy in the 42 is 2trn and 1IC in Manchuria.  I pretty much build an IC every round until the 5th round.  Japan needs major land production to assualt Russia effectively.

      With this said though I think the Allies have a 60%-40% advantage over the Axis in the 42.  In the 41, I think it is Allies 55-45 advantage.

      @HolKann:

      First post updated with the new map and pieces, let’s hope a lot of people like them ;)

      @P@nther:

      Will you include your “final” pdn-file? That would be great :-)

      No, but you can always find it here.

      @TimTheEnchanter:

      It uses a combination of gaussian blur and a technique called Alpha masking.  If you don’t have the alpha mask plugin, get it.  It is way cool.

      …

      Wow, tnx for the minitutorial, I’m learning new techniques :)

      Whoa- way too light dude!  I like the fonts with the added names but the map and pieces are way too light.  Can you keep the fonts and such with the darker map from the last version???

      Right now I prefer your last version.

      Although I wish they would reprint AA50, I’m still glad they updated the Revised version.  This will still be a cool version and I will buy me a few copies for sure.  Coming out in August huh?- that really means October according to Wizards- they run on a “special” calendar y’know.

    • RE: UK: The Italian Fleet Gambit

      Interesting opening, I had a friend figure this out recently.  This “UK bomber gambit” is devestating in the '41.  9 UK/US bombers are ready by turn 3.  Italian navy builds don’t help.  Every time Axis invest in the water it allows Russia to grow stable and stronger.  Besides if you don’t bomb the Italian navy off the map, you can always SBR the crap out of Germany and Italy- same difference, though the navy would be optimal.  I was wondering how this works in the '42.

    • RE: Did The Caspian Sub Group Die?

      I have copies of most of his articles- at least the ones I thought were the most valuable.  The best I could do is scan them for you.  I’m glad I printed them off.  I don’t think you can find them anywhere.  The articles of most importance:

      US shipping- still very good for AA50- a must have!!!
      Tactics- also still applicable- also a must have for AA50

      about other papers:

      the Baltic Papers- 1-4- you can still pick up some ideas here but for the most part they are now useless.

      Canadian Shield- pretty much dead in AA50

      German turtle- may need this in AA50 for some endgames

      India Complex- somewhat useful in the fact that you should ask yourself similar questions when building a complex anywhere.

      Z42 Progression- won’t work because Canadian Shield is dead, however the concepts can help you keep your eyes peeled in other places on the new AA50 board.

      KJF article by MightyAirforce- can still get some ideas here if your a KJF strategist.

      There were a few others but they weren’t as important to me.

      I am also making my own “Beginners Strategy” papers like the ones Caspian Sub had- these are really beneficial for starting out.  I still have the printed ones from Revised.

    • Which is better 41 or 42?

      I know this is a little early since a lot of people have not played the 42 as much, but I was just interested.  I myself have played about 12 '41 games and only 3 ’ 42 games.  So far I like the 41 better.

      What version do you like and why do you think the version you choose is the better version?

      Which version do you think will become standard?
