      Excuse me, unidentified moderator.

      I am sorry.

I ask forgivenesss of those who live in San Francisco.

I ask forgiveness of those kindhearted people everrywhere who are trying to extend the benefits of technology to the less fortunate.

I ask forgiveness of those who may be of alternate lifestyles whose wish is to be welcomed by all; not shunned, nor banned, force marched, isolated, ostrasized, placed in concentration camps, tortured, called names which they(after decades or centuries) ironically append to themselves, beaten, hanged, butchered, crucified, accused of treason, conspiracy, evil acts which were first perpetrated on themselves, and any other forgotten slight or mistreatment I may have a)intentionally, b)misguidedly, c)mistakenly or d)unintentionally inflicted upon my fellow conversationalists.

Okay, so  the major contenders so far are(in no particular order)…

      1. TV,
      2. MS Windows(Any particular leading contender?[95?, 98?, 2000?, Millenium?, XP?]),
      3. Income Tax Withholding,
      4. Money(is the root of all evil…Error, error! Correct input required.),
      5. The _Evil_  Spork,
      6. Video Games,
      7. Lazy Parents,

      8. Guns,
      9. Religion,
      10. Woman(though I think that falls under the “God/s” or “Evolution” category rather than a creation of MAN,
        12, 13, & 14) _________________any I missed in a quick perusal of these 5+ pages.

Jen, I see your point about TV, but Uncle Milty, Lucille Ball and “Sports Night” make me vote that one out.
My vote would lean more toward “The TV Remote”(forefather of “The Universal Remote.”)  It lead to surfing, more dictarorships of the TV viewing time and bigger couch potato(e)s.  :-)

MONEY and CAPITALIZM, are both very high on my worst list. People who ain’t got money hate those who have money. Those who do have money feel guilty and want to destroy “The System” or find some way to make up for “The Sin of Being Rich.”

I kinda like the idea of some Polynesian islands…
the richer you were the larger the stones you had to carry in your pocket.
I recall seeing pictures of some chiseled round stones that hadta weigh a coupla hunert pounds.   :-D

RELIGION , Come on!  We’e discussed this many times over.  Hitler klled the Jews.  He was working on the Catholics and Protestants, too.  Lenin and Stalin virtuallly eliminated religion from the USSR(the State their religion.)  China still persecutes religions to this day.

Muslims attacked nonbelivers.  Convert or die!  Catholics attacked in retaliation, not just to regain Jerusalem(the Holy Land.)

If they hadn’t you wouldn’t have a choice today!
IF you’re gonna say RELIGION, at least say RELIGIOUS FANATICS and be specific…not just MUSLIMS…
INQUISATORS(Jesuits…see Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio), JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES(only hang with their own), those LDS(Mormons) STILL PRACTICING POLYGAMY…would be examples I’d choose.

Jen,  “Computer” was on my mind just prior to reading your note.  Frightening eh?
But I’d still go back a step and say “Calculator”…as it took away many student’s ability to CALCULATE for themselves.
I got thru Math, Geometry, Algebra and Calculus without a calculator.

Health care costs soaring for GM
Projected expense for retirees is $63 billion
      By DANNY HAKIM

      Posted: Sept. 14, 2004

GM covers the health care costs of 1.1 million Americans, or close to half a percent of the total population, though fewer than 200,000 are active workers. Not only are such costs escalating rapidly, but GM’s rivals, based in Japan and Germany, have virtually no retirees from their newer operations in the United States and, at home, the expenses are largely assumed by taxpayers through nationalized health care systems.

Compared with GM, Toyota, the industry’s most profitable automaker, pays almost nothing for health care. It employs 31,000 Americans, whom it covers with a good health plan, but the company said in its latest annual report that its future financial obligations for its retirees’ health care were not large enough to affect its profits significantly.

The United Automobile Workers union negotiated generous pension and health benefits with the American automakers in a pre-globalized era in which the Big Three essentially made up the world’s auto industry. Today, with competition global and the U.S. health care system putting the burden largely on employers, retiree medical costs are one reason Toyota’s $10.2 billion profit in its most recent fiscal year was more than double the combined profit of the Big Three.

“We’re spending more on health care and less on the auto business, and frankly that does not work,” said John Devine, GM’s chief financial officer.

The biggest challenge for GM is not so much that people are living longer today, but that medical costs are going up so fast in an era of mega-marketed pharmaceuticals and big-ticket diagnostic tests. When Pusey retired, medical spending was about 5% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product, compared with about 15% today. Average spending per person on hospital care alone is up from $318 in 1965, inflation adjusted, to about $1,600 today.

For GM, which earned $1.2 billion last year, annual health spending has risen to $4.8 billion from $3 billion just since 1996, even as deaths and job cuts have trimmed its worker and retiree ranks and it has taken numerous steps to trim costs. The company also contributed another $3.3 billion last year to a retiree health care trust fund. Out of the total 1.1 million people it covers, GM pays health care expenses for 450,000 retirees and their spouses.

Ford Retirees to Pay Some Health Care Costs
      By Dee-Ann Durbin
      Associated Press
      December 15, 2005, Page D2

The UAW announced over the weekend that it had reached the deal with Ford, but details were withheld until after the UAW presented the deal to local union leaders. The agreement is subject to ratification by active members.

The agreement is expected to save Ford $850 million annually on a pretax basis, the UAW said.

Ford is the second automaker to reach a health care agreement with the UAW this year. Last month, General Motors Corp. hourly workers voted for a pact that requires workers and retirees to pay more for their health care.

The UAW said it will now negotiate a similar agreement with DaimlerChrysler AG.

Dearborn-based Ford reported a third-quarter loss of $284 million. The No. 2 U.S. automaker has been struggling to meet its health care obligations as its U.S. market share declines.

Ford spent about $3.1 billion to cover 550,000 hourly and salaried workers, retirees and dependents in 2004, and expects that total to rise to $3.5 billion this year.

The health care agreement is only part of a major restructuring plan Ford expects to announce in January. The company has said job cuts and plant closures will be part of that plan.(Now in Fast Forward speed.)

      @Imperious:

I am a slave to my philosophy.

I am not clear… did you pull people from Katrina? and WTC?.. If not i really dont see your point at all.

      No, I wasn’t there.

My point is that I seek out others who risk something of value(their time, property, money, health, life, and sometimes a little emotion) to help others.
No, I don’t give $ to vagrants. Though I have bought them lunch, watched/eaten and talked with them, as well as gotten a blanket or helped them find a shelter.

Sometimes, I’m sure it’s been a waste of time.  However, at other times I think I’ve seen a change(a light in the eye) or heard a comment(“I think I’m gonna head home.”)  And NO, I didn’t buy them a bus ticket to San Diego(refundable at the counter.)

I’ve learned a lot from the helpers and the helped that I’ve met, including how to spot a scam(or a score of them.)
If I can pass this knowledge on to others then more can really help those who need it and fewer get scammed.

I, my family. and friends have helped old folks do yard and house work, put up/take down/repair screens, fix gutters, windows, locks and doors.
Sometimes I’ve even accepted a buck or two for the work so that they can keep their pride.  But the $ always goes to a future project(plastic bags, rivets, screen, etc.) If the work is not arranged by a volunteer organization or church, sometimes I spend my $ for lunches.
      *****************************8
      OMGs!!!
What a waste. My time, my money, my gas, wear and tear on my SUV, my emotions, my self-image,
my relationship with a non-existent supreme being.

Not to mention anyone else because they don’t matter anyway.

Sometimes the result of giving isn’t worth it.
Recall… a plane crashed in NY or DC in icy water.
A passerby jumped in to save one passenger.
He went back for a second…
followed by a third, fourth and fifth!
Then he went back again and died!!!

      It wasn’t worth it!!!

      Or was it?

Ask his friends.  Ask his family.  Ask those he saved.  Ask him.
      Oh, I forgot. You can’t.

It was a success but, not in a realistic situation.

      In other words…
It won’t be a success until it knocks a NK or PRC missle(doesn’t have to be a nuke for the test) outa the sky.

Will the Pentagon pay NK or PRC to launch a top of the line nuke at the US??…
Say Midway or some little island offa the coast of Washington state.

      Really,
When will you feel safe from NK, PRC or other nukes?
What level of system do we need?
      A) One to five missle knockdown capability?
      B) Six to twenty missle knockdown capability?
      C) Twenty to one hundred missle knockdown capability?
      D) MORE?
      E) Is it too expensive?

      Other alternatives…
      F)  French diplomacy
      G) Preemptive non-nuclear attack?
      H) Preemptive sabotage?
      I) _________________________________

People make commitments they keep. They also fall in and out of some of these commitments.
      Marriage…not always perfect.
      Faith…not always perfect.
Various brotherhoods from KKK to Omega(balck frat) to Knight of Kiwanis to Spanish Inq. to NAAACP to Al Queda to US Marines to the Skulls, etc…none perfect some doing lil or no good.

Sounds like your commitment is to yourself.
      Narcisistic. Hedonistic. Selfish.

I prefer the kinda peeps who helped at WTC or Katrina aftermath.
Some of them are dead now because they tried to help.

Or those who pulled the co-pilot outa that plane in Lexington.

Or the 1000’s who helped search for a missing 3 year old in nearby Cincinnati…
some missed sleep, some missed work, some both…
only to find out that someone in the family killed him, burned the body and disposed of it(details as yet unknown.)

If another kid is “lost” I know lots of those people or others like them will join the next search.

My commitment is to my family.  Yes, there have been problems, but we have worked through them together.
Next is my church and then my neighbors.  If something bad happens I’ll help whoever’s closest after my family is as safe as I can make them.

A little sacrifice on my/your part can make a great difference.
Seen the movie Pass It Forward?
      It doesn’t always work.

Napolean, Ghandi, Washington, Ceasar, Alexander the Great, Mother Teresa, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and many others were individuals, but they didn’t accomplish what got done alone.

For the other side see Stalin, Mao, Che, Sadddam, etc.

But, if you are on your deathbed looking back?

Or, if you are on your deathbed asking your loved one to pull the plug/shoot you/end your suffering?
What value have you placed on life?
What value are you instilling in your grandchildren?  To end life when they determine it is not worth living.

Marriage?  If it is to be successful you value the beenefits to your spouse and kids more than your own pleasure/benefit.

Even that might be considered the most important decision in some people’s lives.

Adolf Hitler had no kids.  Thank gods!!
      Good for us.
      Good for the NONEXISTENT THEM!

Many valuable decisions you make repeatedly every day…with or without knowing it.
You keep your faith…or deny it.
      You stay married or divorce.
You take that drink or refuse to take a drink…one day at a time.

The two FOX reporters valued their lives enough to accept Islam on video.
Now these reporters have valued/or not valued their faith enough to renounce Islam.
They must value their faith or faithlessness enough to die for it…
because they now have a target painted on each of them.

For what decisions are you willing to die?
For what decisions are you willing to sacrifice those you love?

      Save the world/lose your family.
      Save the continent/lose your family.
      Save the nation/lose your family.
Save the state or region/lose your family.
Save Quebec City or Bejing or Mexico City or Canberra or Washington or some smaller city/lose your family.
Save your village or township/lose you family.
      Save your church./lose your family.
Save your block/ lose your family.
Save your kids’ school/ lose your family?

Is it an important enough decision to think about ahead of time???

      Imperious Leader ,
      NOT having children…
Look at the Democrat party to see where it gets you….
Dems are more likely to abort a child.
Dems are more likely to not have kids.
Dems are more likely to have 1 or 2 kids(Republicans[rich or poor] are more likely to have 2 or more.)
That’s why their #s are decreasing.

Of course, we could talk of minorities & illegals in America having more kids than the white majority…
but that’s another topic for another thread.

    • Watched Stalag 17(1953)Timeframe : Battle of the Bulge

The movie mentions some of the events/problems of the BotB

      Freaky Flashbacks

      1. Didn’t recall that Stalag 17 had a Sg. Schultz
          • Wonder if that is where they got the Sgt. Schultz idea for the Hogan’s Heros TV series. –"I know nothing!  I know nothing.!"
      1. Also noted a mousey German Private with spectacles in a coupla scenes.
          • Anyone recall Arty Johnson of the TV series Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In fame.  He occassionally portrayed a WWII German Private whose main comment vas, “Veeeery interesting!” This is the character I believe he based his Nazi on.
      1. Peter Graves, the second leader of the Mission : Impossible IMF(Impossible Missions Force) was the the sneaky Nazi spy in this movie.  I wonder if it affected his career.  I do not recall him in much of anything else between S17 and M:I.
