    • RE: Global 2nd edition Q+A ( AAG40.2)

If the USSR is not at war in the pacific then no, the rest of the allies cannot land planes on USSR territory in the pacific half of the map.

Of course, the USSR can declare war on Japan from turn one with no consequences, so there’s really no reason not to be at war since all not being at war does is limit your options.

    • RE: Global 2nd edition Q+A ( AAG40.2)

It’s non-combat, and must be a land unit (AAA don’t count). They can land planes there, but to claim the territory as their own, they must land an Infantry, Artillery, Mech, or Tank unit.

    • RE: Defending AAA question

The AAA unit doesn’t fire during bombing raids. Facilities are assumed to have built in AAA which fires once during a bombing raid. AAA units get one shot at the beginning of a defensive battle involving attacking planes, and after that they can be taken as casualties as normal. If you attack an AAA unit on its own using aircraft, the AAA gets 1 roll to try and kill the plane(s). If it misses, then the AAA is dead.

    • RE: Question about transports

      1. If the transports are on their on, then they are sunk by the fighter, yes.
      2. When the defending fleet is defeated, the transports die with it. However, if you are attacking with subs and the defender has lost all of his warships, but still has planes left, then the transports can be taken as casualties for the sub hits while the rest of the forces fight it out.

    • RE: Retreats

You can retreat as long as the sub didn’t start in that sea zone that turn. If the sub came from another sea zone, then it can retreat from whence it came.

    • RE: Japan Naval Strategy

The problem with this strategy is that it’s hard to win the game this way. There’s three victory cities you need on the mainland, and if China controls all of it for a few rounds then it will later be very difficult for Japan to get back onto the mainland, as China will have a lot of troops with nothing better to do than guard those victory cities.

There is also a surprising amount of money to be lost this way. All those little territories add up. There is also no real reason to abandon China since it’s entirely possible to grab all the money islands while at the same time killing China.

    • RE: My Allied strategy

In some circumstances it can be worth it as the UK to declare war on Japan first in order to get the bonus money for UK Pacific and Anzac.

    • RE: Convoy disruption or bombing raids

It depends on the enemy. If you’re fighting against Russia, then bombing raids are better. If you’re fighting against Japan, then Convoy disruption works better.

The French fighter that starts on the UK is also a great way to remove those blockers and give Germany a nice surprise.

If you don’t want to fight the DD, you may move the subs out of the sea zone during the combat movement phase.

    • RE: Russian Doctorine: RED BLITZ

Germany usually comes in with a very limited supply of infantry units, and it takes lot longer for new German infantry to reach the front than it does for Russian infantry.
Thus, if you can remove the German infantry at a 1:1 ratio, you gain a greater likely hood of making the German player lose more valuable units like tanks and planes.

I’m not sure what you mean by S China, but attacking Korea with Russia DOES affect Mongolia.

    • RE: Sub question

The German planes cannot hit the Russian submarine. They would only be useful to help kill the cruiser.
If both cruisers are lost and the battle just comes down to the German sub attacking a transport, then the planes are useless and the transport is killed automatically and the battle is over.
He doesn’t have to roll a hit to get the transport.

The rules make this automatic since there is no other way that the battle could end, as the planes can’t hit the sub and the sub can’t hit the planes, and the transport obviously is defenseless.
So even if the transport wasn’t just killed automatically, the owner of the German sub would just have to keep rolling until he got a 2 or 1 and the transport gets killed anyway.

    • RE: Best Places for Japanese Factories

French Indo China is great for a lot of reasons, including the ones you listed, but also because the Chinese can’t attack it.
I like Malaya for the same reason, but also because it’s the same distance from India as French Indo China, which is useful if you’re just slow playing cheap units against India.
I also like Malaya a lot because it is very useful for going after Australia.

    • RE: Best Places for Japanese Factories

When I buy a factory turn 1, it almost always goes on Shantung. I almost never build factories on Manchuria or Korea.
After Shantung, if for some reason I’m declaring war late, I may get a second one on Kiangsu, otherwise my second factory is almost always on French Indo China.
If I can hold it, I’ll get my third factory on Malaya, otherwise I’ll put it on Kwangtung. Although sometimes I don’t get a third factory. Just depends on how the game is going.
If I had to rate them from most to least useful I would put the territories in this order:

      French Indo China
      Malaya
      Shantung
      Kwangtung
      Kiangsu
      Manchuria
      Korea

    • RE: Random Thoughts about the game…

I’m not sure an Aussie brown would be an improvement. You would still have the issue with two powers having very similar colors (Russians and Aussies instead of Russians and Italians).
I would prefer a more contrasting color altogether. I have one friend who is partially color blind and the current colors give him a lot of problems. Maybe a shade of purple?

    • RE: Keys to Allied Success

Nothing, except that there are often better uses for the Italians round 1. I prefer to take out the french fleet so that they don’t have a chance to escape. Also, sometimes the UK Cruiser off of Gibraltar survives and needs to be taken out as well.

But Ireland has no IPC value, so no, USA couldn’t do that unfortunately. Also, I can’t think of many good reasons for them to want one there anyway.

    • RE: How often do you purchase new AAA?

Elk, you also have to remember that destroyed planes are also removed from further rounds of combat, and as they are often your heaviest hitters and taken last as casualties, this can swing battle odds more than an infantry would.

Regardless, in the big battles I’ve calculated buying some AAA vs infantry, the resulting odds for the attacker aren’t usually more than a percentage point or two different. You buy the AAA because you’re hoping for a lucky roll to decimate the attacker.
