Yeah, they’re are pretty rare purchase. On some occasions, like when you know India or Moscow is about to fall, and the axis have to bring air power in to take them, it is often worth purchasing some AAA to try and get some lucky plane hits.

RE: Spain?
That’s correct.
Russia could only attack if Italy/Germany had already declared war on it. -
RE: USA Strategy/Purchasing
I’ve purchased a cruiser once or twice.
I needed to maximize the defense of a sea zone and 12 IPC for a cruiser for the final part of the purchase was the best way to do it.
Pretty rare scenario though. -
RE: Spain?
I would think that attacking the neutrals that early would be risky unless the UK is also ready to hit Turkey at the same time.
Otherwise, if Germany/Italy has anything in range of Turkey, that could get dangerous for the middle east real fast. -
RE: Question for Germany-Italy player
That would be a pretty big change though. Completely destabilizing in the Pacific. Destroyers would be extremely valuable. So many times I’ve cleared a Japanese destroyer and moved my whole fleet into SZ 6 in non-combat.
And it would change the ground game a bit too. I can remember a few times when playing as Germany when in Russian territory, and many times playing as Japan when fighting in Chinese territory where it was useful to use some infantry to take a territory and then move ahead two spaces with mechs/tanks into a friendly territory.
Also imagine playing as the UK and you decide to attack Iraq, but leave 1 mech behind to move through in non-combat to activate Persia.

RE: Question for Germany-Italy player
Yes they can. Destroyers can move past subs without initiating a combat.

RE: Axis "J2/I2" Strategy
Nah, they could still take Paris, they would just have to send all their planes at it and leave all the UK navy alone.

RE: Stupid A&A G40 Rules
Problem I see with those new allied victory conditions is that it would now be possible for Japan to win in the Pacific on the same round that the Allies win in Europe.

RE: Japanese perspective: Building US fleet in the Caroline Islands
I’ve seen some players toss 3 fighters on the Carolines to hold it for a round or 2 until the USA can get troops in position to take it.
This can slow down the USA a tiny bit, especially if they haven’t built any additional transports. I usually don’t bother. I prefer to have all my planes doing more useful things elsewhere. The fact is, long term you can’t defend the Carolines. It is simply too close to Australia and Hawaii and too far away from home to hold while still making progress everywhere else.
What I like to do is keep my fleet at the Philippine Islands. It already has an airbase and naval base for you and is close enough for your fleet to punish anything the allies send to the DEI or SZ 6.
It also keeps the USA from retaking the Philippines.
Put all your planes that aren’t on carriers on an airbase so that they can reach SZ 6 if the USA goes there.
If the allied fleet is small enough (which it probably is), putting all your planes directly on the Philippines can force them to back off. -
RE: Keep the Germans out of Moscow
Nippon-koku, remember that you can’t land AAA in an amphibious assault. So in your scenario, when the USA takes Norway, those 2 AAA would have to stay on the boats until next turn.
The UK could add its AAA during its non-combat move though. -
RE: Japan is too strong?
I do the same. If the Russians stack all their infantry there, I just leave the 10 inf and AA gun in Manchuria. If they do attack Korea, then I’m fine with it because then I can expand into Russian territory without activating the Mongolians. It only really gets annoying when the USA takes Korea and then the Russians reinforce with all their guys.

RE: Setup modification to make the Med interesting
Well, making Taranto basically impossible would certainly change things a lot. The UK fleet would probably retreat to Gibraltar for defense.
Might make a Tobruk attack turn 1 much more common. -
RE: Going All out Hitler…
The main problem I see is that if you do go sea lion, you won’t have any immediate reinforcements available for your units in Russian territory. With what you have there initially, you won’t be able to go any deeper into Russian territory, and you leave the units you have there exposed to easy destruction by the Russians. The Russians will be able to build new units in Novo and Ukraine and push you back easily and you will have even less units to protect Berlin with after Sea Lion.

RE: US landing fighters in Britain when not at war with Germany
The USA cannot move any units into any land territory that’s not their own until they are at war.
So, no, they cannot send fighters to the UK until they are at war with Germany. -
RE: Do you take Ukraine as Germany or Italy?
I personally think it’s important for Germany to own the Ukraine factory. They are the one that’s going to be (hopefully) taking Moscow, and they need the front line production from Ukraine to make that happen optimally.
Yes, you want Italian units available for can openers, but even a small trickle of mecs/tanks from Northern Italy is plenty for that purpose. -
RE: Landing Aircraft
I’m also pretty sure it’s a no.
The rules say you can plan to win a sea battle (no matter what the odds are), but there’s nothing about planning to lose a battle or retreat from a battle. -
RE: Retreat
Doesn’t matter which round, as long as there’s still defenders left after a full round of combat, the attacker can choose to retreat.

RE: Custom Rule Book
Honestly I think you are being a bit over paranoid. The worst case scenario is probably they send you a scary cease and desist letter, you take it down, and that’s that. Or they send the website a DMCA request, the website takes it down, and that’s that.
The most likely scenario is that they don’t care at all.
Probably the best thing you can do to prevent them caring is to avoid using any of their artwork from the rule books. That seems to be where companies get touchy.
Other than that, just restating all the rules and adding in all the stuff from the FAQ, etc, it is very unlikely that they will care.
I am not a lawyer, but from my limited understanding of the law, collections of facts are not copyrightable. If you are just stating all of the rules of the game and not ‘stealing’ their custom artwork, you are probably fine. -
RE: Follow the money?!
France would get to keep the money, but they wouldn’t be able to spend it until Paris was liberated.

RE: Using the battlecalculator when attacking (moscow) or any other large battle
I always battle calc any battle that isn’t immediately obvious, and I expect my opponents to do the same if they want.
In my experience it takes just as long to add up all the attack power vs defense power as it does to simply plug everything into the calculator, and the calculator is far more accurate.
I’ve never seen it take more than an extra, maybe, 5-10 minutes over the course of an all day long game, and I find it makes the game better overall as it helps people make less stupid mistakes.
