    • RE: Iwo Jima

@SuperbattleshipYamato In my game, I took the island without a fight with 1 transport loaded with infantries because the Japanese player evacuated the garrison earlier in the game to reinforce China. My opponent sank my transport with air but was too busy to recapture the island.

If the island is garrisoned, a transport loaded with a tank and an infantry could do the job but that kind of battle could get dicey. To send more stuff seems to me like it’s too much money spent to invade a low income and strategically placed island like Iwo Jima.

Last game I had with my friend, I invaded Iwo Jima early and it has been a great landing spot in a SZ6 strike for my bombers built in Western United States the turn before.

    • RE: Converting to KJF

@crockett36 said in Converting to KJF:

So up until now I’ve been solidly a KGF guy. Guard against the vapid VC win, and go to town in Europe. The factor that always pushed it over the edge is the race to get planes to defend Moscow seemed/is shorter via Europe. They always arrive too little, too late. The politics is much worse in the Atlantic.

But, with Japan starting at 26, it would appear easier to trip them up on their way to 64 than to trip up Germany. I discovered that a vast majority of the American units can make their way to Wake Island. Bring transports and units and drop a naval base t1 and you are in position to move to Guam. Anzac can contribute all air and sea units by t2 and can land on newly captured islands to act as scramblers. You can put out blockers as well.

Your purchases would be subs and planes t1, 2, and 3 so that if the force were attacked your reserves would counter attack. You would take your air units as casualties first so that the fleet would go down. I’m calling this Half the Empire strategy. gotta go.

When the US goes to war, you could use Caroline or Queensland that way without having to invest in a naval base. Both of them are in range of Hawai and Queensland is more protected.

    • RE: Thoughts on where to go from here!

Germany is only three turns away from the russian capital and is without immediate threats to the territories it’s holding.

Maybe your next step could be to declare war to the western allies with Japan.

      @Aaron_the_Warmonger

Germany seems to go fine, especially with the russian troops from Leningrad who will be trapped G3 and won’t be able to make it back to Moskow.

    • RE: Operation Herkules

      @Marshmallow:

The idea of getting rid of the UK planes as fast as possible, before they can sit behind a stack of ground troops, is interesting and would certainly result in a weaker Egypt. How do plan to handle being behind against Russia as a result of your two strat bomber purchase?

      Marsh

G2 buys and beyond would be ground troops to invade Russia. I agree with you that it will be harder against Russia but it’s still possible. 2 rounds without serious ground troops purchase would place Germany in serious troubles.

The German planes in Southern Italy won’t be able to reach Syria unless Italy was able to secure Greece on I1. If that’s the case (Greece is not Axis-controlled) you would need to commit all your strat bombers to Syria, correct?

Only the four Strategic Bombers have enough range to do the raid on Malta or Syria. It could be possible to bring smaller planes if they were landed G1 in Southern Italy and did not scramble during the Taranto raid. I won’t do the raid with four Strategic Bombers if there is more than 1 AA gun, 1 Inf, 1 Fighter and 1 Strategic Bomber on the island. I’ll use those Bombers instead to threathen Sealion and against Russia.

    • RE: Operation Herkules

      @Gargantua:

Is your plan going to change if they land allied aircraft in Syria?  which is equidistant for them to Malta?

I mean - it sounds like fun don’t get me wrong, but seems alot of focus for only a little gain.

Syria is even better. My goal is to get rid of most of the RAF threat. Without the Maltese AA gun, it would be easier for the Luftwaffe to kill them. It would gives the benefit of more freedom of operation for the small Regia Marina and remove defense for Cairo.

As always, if UK is dumb, go ahead and prep for Sea Lion

In my last game, I wanted to go for Malta but my opponent didn’t buy enough stuff on G-B so I went for Sea Lion instead of Malta and captured London easily. I never had the chance to do Hercules yet but I’d like to try it next game.

    • RE: Operation Herkules

I’d like to land in Tobruk I1 with the TT and regroup all the Italian stuff at this place to start my advance toward Egypt I2 with additional ground and air reinforment for the capture of Cairo I3.

    • Operation Herkules

I plan to execute a form of Operation Herkules (Invasion of Malta) in my next game with Germany to help Italy in the Med by destroying all the RAF aircrafts on the island on G2.

      G1 buying
      -2 Strategic Bombers 24 IPCs
-The rest could be a sub, 2 INF, ART, MECH to send against Russia or maybe to capture Gibraltar.

On G2, I will send the four Strategic Bombers to strafe everything on Malta. Thus will allow Italy to start reinforcing Africa I1 without having her TT sunk and start building a navy (with another TT!) and operate in the Med more easily.

Sure it will be costly for Germany but it could accord one turn of bad spending and it could vive Italy a head start.

Is anyone ever tried something like that?

    • RE: Taranto or Tobruk

An expensive way to get Egypt almost everytime. Germany could place an AC and 2 TT G2 (2 TNK, 2 INF) in SZ93 and land the whole Luftwaffe in Alexandria G2. Italy could then soften Egypt with everything available I2. G3 Germany cleans the remains of the 8th army and try to hold the place with 2 TNK and 2 INF (losses attributed to planes). If UK3 counterattack succesfully, Italy retakes the place I3 and German aircrafts help hold the ground G4. After that reinforce with IC, TT, Air. But like I said earlier, it’s kind of expensive to do things that way.

Killing Tobruk (and Ethiopia) UK1 may over strech UK too much and leave Egypt vulnerable from amphibious assaults from Italy. Tarento seems safer in my opinion but loosing this battle is almost fatal for Egypt.

    • RE: Sea Lion

If you don’t go Sealion G2, bombers in West Germany can be used to sink the Royal Navy in SZ76 and land in Italian Somaliland. This attack would greatly help Italy to dominate the Mediterenean Sea and threaten Egypt. It’s a good response to a UK1 all men London buy.

    • RE: Syria AB

One of the best use I saw for an air base in Syria is when Italy built one I2. German bombers landed there G3 and can opened for Japan in SZ37 on G4 and then landed in Siam.

    • RE: French Battleship

The French did put up a good fight against the British at the battle of Dakar on the West African Coast, an attempt to sink the Richelieu. The Royal Navy was repulsed with heavy dammages  and had to go back to Gibraltar. Richelieu took little part in it, firing 24 rounds in two days but scoring no hits.

Jean Bart, still incomplete, faced the US Navy during Operation Torch and took a heavy beating. She was unoperationnal for the rest of the war.

I like the immobille Battleship house rule. It could be included in the game, especially in SZ 87 but maybe in North Africa too.

    • RE: Popularity of sending German/Italian strat bomber to can-open for Japan

      G1 Germany buy two bombers.
      I1 Italie captures Syria.
G2 Luftwaffe (4 bombers, Tac, Fgt) fly to Syria.
J2 Builds harbor on Hainan and brings loaded TT.
I2 Italy buy an AB for Syria.
G3 Bmbs can open SZ37 and land in Siam.
      J3 Japon grabs India.

Works only one time! Still good for the next games to shuttle bombers.

    • RE: Speed of Play

In my gaming group, we use cell apps to throw dices during battles and also use an abacus as a scoreboard to display the hits scored on each side after every round of battle. It really helps to speed up the play, especially in big battles.

    • RE: United Kingdom Strategy (Video)

I love to declare war on Japan UK2 to help China. If Japan did not build at least one IC on the mainland and Usa goes KJF, Japan is doomed! Russia and Australia must join the party too in order to make this works best.

    • RE: Building mIC's in both Egypt and Persia?

The Hessian, we play with no bid. My opponent do the Tarento and Malta Navy attack. A Persian IC could not help to save Egypt in time against this strategy.

Good but risky and costly counter is Sea Lion also teamed with an India Crush. It can become boring to do after many plays.

Sorry, I’m a little bit off topic of this thread.

    • RE: Building mIC's in both Egypt and Persia?

I play very often with a friend who is very effective at defending Egypt. He build an Egyptian IC UK1. He also brings the loaded indian TT+navy and the loaded Med TT to Ethiopia. The Indian air force goes to Brithish Somaliland. All this stuff goes to Egypt UK2 with the surviving Maltese planes and three new infantries. The BB follows next round with the remaining indian airplane. And just in case, he places two loaded TT in South Africa to take back Egypt UK3. Most of the time, it’s enough to stop the Axis or discourage them (Me!) to go for for Africa/Middle East.
