    • RE: Bids

I really don’t think this game needs a bid. Once Germany and Japan become monsters, they just need to keep pressure way up. In the case of Japan, they can really go where ever they want in the pacific without significant Allied intervention being involved.

In that case, All Germany has to do is play the waiting game as the other posters have said.

I’ve never played a KGF strat in AAAE because really each side should be taken in equal amounts, but I can’t imagine the Allies winning a game in which they ignore Japan and end up on the receiving end of a major invasion on the West Coast and a probable invasion of Moscow around the same time.

But then again, I wouldn’t mind an extra tank somewhere in my empire.

    • RE: Cutting the Italian legs out from under the axis

I think Britain could take out Italy’s fleet pretty easily with it’s bombers and shipping, if they aren’t too screwed over by the G1 attacks of course.

And then the USA could send over it’s bomber just in case.

Thanks for the clarification on that, because we didn’t really look up the rules until we got the tech, so I was skeptical of it’s validity.

To destroy a large portion of the British fleet. I know it’s usually bad news to have them leave the Med, but it was a gamble that worked in the end.

Title:  Technology Rules? Yeah, Okay. (1941)
      Date:  February 23, 2009
      Special Rules: NO and Tech.
Victor:  Draw. An Allied player dropped out so we stopped.
      Game Length:  6 hours - 4 or 5 rounds.
Bias:  About Even, the two veteran players were split up. Me as Axis was paired with newbie.
      Description:
The Germans exploded out, gaining all thier National Objectives, and kept them for the remainder of the game. They kept major pressure on the Russia by streaming forces across the Eastern Front. Besides a horrendous first turn at Sea, the navy recovered later in the game. Not much ground was taken after reaching the gates of Moscow due to the stacking, but Caucasus was taken late in the game but returned.
The Russians did well to stem the tide of combat. They got Rockets in the middle of the game which was an annoyance to placing troops into Karelia. They stemmed the Japanese tide at Bury and never relented.
Japan expanded a lot but played a more conservative game. They ended up with a nearly destroyed China and a weakened British Empire. Their fleet was growing quite large and prepping to engage the US fleet.
The Brits had a shamble of a game. They did good to protect their empire, but made some bad attempts in France and the Atlantic, losing their fleet towards the end to German Bombers and the Italian navy.
The Italians did good, without ever really expanding into Africa. They helped support Germany in France and were a pain in the British side.
USA Did well, building up a large navy and prepping it for the assault on Japan. They made a late game mistake, wasting 15 IPCs on an IC in Brazil for no reason. They used their Bombers to harass the German economy, but to no real effect.

Observations/Recommendations:  This game, although every major power bought it, there wasn’t much tech until later in the game, and only the Allies were successful with it. The NOs really add something else to the game, and allow for more interesting games. I was amazed at how much money Germany could make with it’s NOs. I was so glad to be able to pump out so many troops.
On a side note, Could the AA gun in Caucasus (If Russia has rockets) fire upon the IC in Rome?

    • RE: Italy Uses and Reasons for Being

From the moment I opened the box I saw that Italy was going to be very useful to the Axis, and it turns out they are. The guys I play with underestimate the power of Italy, and I’ve done quite well in handling their actions in the Mediterranean, but I have yet to conquer all of Afrika and show the Allies what they can do. It’s only a matter of time.

If the Japanese take over the British Empire in the East, and the Italians manage to break through into the underbelly of Afrika, the allies and most importantly the UK have a big problem on their hands.

This movie is all about the violence. And that’s awesome.

Well, according to Wikipedia (yeah I know), It’s partially based off of an Italian film, I bet involving less violence. But hey, who cares?

    • RE: Ignore Germany Strategy

I’m not negative about new ideas, I just don’t like his “defend to the death” idea of his strategy. I believe that something like it could work, just maybe not in exactly the way he prescribes here. It is great in theory, but the plan changes accordingly to how the tides of war are shifting.

I will try something like this strategy in my next game, but I don’t think it will end up exactly as it is planned out here.

    • RE: Ignore Germany Strategy

About your comment about the German fleet being sunk: the same thing could be said towards the British Fleet. It’s never that cut and dry.

Also, I would say the British empire is in trouble when Japan takes most of it over J1.

You seem to be confident that every aspect of this plan will work flawlessly. What if say, the Germans prematurely break through into Moscow before your allotted few turns? What if Japan manages to hold onto it’s newly acquired colonies and fights off or decimates the US fleet? How will that work into your great strategy?

    • RE: Ignore Germany Strategy

What if when Japan falls they are in a position to put a major blow onto one of the allies? What If they are not as spread out and disorganized as one might think. What if they have a very organized defense and a plan to counterattack the allies on the turn Japan falls?

All valid thoughts. I would keep playing. I would want to see if I could win back the game for the Allies. And as LuckyDay said: It’s all about the dice.

I wouldn’t call it stupid, I would call it brazen. Although many times players do make huge mistakes. Some players try crazy tactics that sometimes work, and other times fail horribly.

    • RE: Ignore Germany Strategy

Wodan, I was mostly confused by your original strategy, in which you said Russia would basically sacrifice itself in order to Destroy Japanese colonial ambitions. With more moderate amounts of forces being sent East, I can agree with it more. I just didn’t like the idea of having an ally give up their territories so they could ship them off East.

You swayed me at least a bit towards your idea of the Japanese gamble. I do enjoy thinking of strategies to do, but I always end up questioning whether they could be used in an actual game.

    • RE: Ignore Germany Strategy

But If I was Russia, I would want to keep my forces on the German Front the strongest. I would be very hesitant to send a huge handful of troops out west to face Japan.

If I was Germany, and I saw the massive forces being sent towards Japan, I would be working my utmost with Italy to disrupt British operations whilst still pushing against the Russian Front.

Wouldn’t it be best to build a UK IC on India, so it would be closer to the Action in the Japanese theater of war? Granted the IC in SA would allow them to keep battling against the Italian hordes sent from Rome, but I think India would be a bit closer to the action, and thusly send troops quicker into the action.

    • RE: Ignore Germany Strategy

Hypothetically all these crazy strategies could work, but in actual testing, I don’t think they could work, because opponents are trying to stay alive. No offense Wodan, but those same strats with slight variants are the ones that work, so those are to be the ones that are the mainstay of strategic thinking. Major plans that I always use: Germany needs to butcher all those Russian troops and cause damage to the British navy, Russia Needs to hold onto it’s rear and to fend off and push back the germany advance. The Japanese need to obliterate China and The UK Empire and battle off the USA fleet. Italy needs to just… well… get some cash. and The United States needs to bomb the crap out of Germany and destory the Japanese Empire and support Africa or British incursions on the European mainland.

I try to not stray far from simple ideas in this game. I think it helps me stay grounded and not say… buy a russian AC and fighter R1 in the belief that it will be helpful.

In some circumstance where the Japanese player is a nub and the Germany player isn’t paying attention to what the other allies are doing these strategies could work, but If the British were focusing thier power on destroying japan first I would be doing my utmost to destroy London. And about that stack you were talking about on London, why just support the invaders with a ton of heavy bombers or something similar, in order to destroy tons of infantry?

      Name: Total Confused War (1941)
      Date: February 15, 2009
Game Length: 5 or 6 turns.
      Special Rules: Tech
Bias: Me (I’ve played more games), first game as Allies. Close friend was playing Axis (first in AA50).

      Description:

Germany Attacks Russia making major headway with thier troops, eventually gaining Mechanized Infantry. They created problems for the USA when they hopped into Brazil and the West Indies.

Russia turtles. Trades a few territories with Germany to make back IPCs. Eventaully, the Japanese break though Byuratia late in the game. Last turn, they sent some troops to retake India and other British colonial possessions.

The Japanese come to dominate the Pacific, except for the Philippines. They get Improved Shipyards which put them farther ahead. They ended the game with a massive fleet on the coast of the USA, facing 15 US infantry. Built IC in east Indies to At end of the game most of the Pacific was empty besides in the Japanese homeland and some in China.

UK buys IC in SA and reinforces Britain and SBRs Berlin for most of the game. The UK invaded North Africa with USA in the middle of the game. The UK ended up taking both Rome and Berlin by the end of the game. They also invaded France later in the game. They obliterated Italy’s fleet. They get Hvy Bombers and Radar. They ended the game with 87 IPCs to spend.

Italy made no real contribution to this game. They could not make any headway in Once the UK invaded Rome they were a moot point.

The US got both Jet Fighers and Long Range Bombers. They constructed an IC in the Philippines and pumped out fighters to harass Japanese troops all along the coast of China.  They sent bombers to the UK to SBR Berlin. Their fleet was subsequently destroyed by the Japanese fleet and led to them building a huge stack of infantry on the West Coast.

The game looked very gloomy for the Allies at the end of the game. While the UK was tooling on Germany and Italy, the Russians were getting slowly strangled by the German advance. The United States was dealing with a massive Japanese fleet, but the base in the Philippines was prepared to strike back at the Japanese empire in the South Pacific. I believe that the Axis were going to win, mainly because of Japan’s domination of the Pacific, but my opponent believes it was the other way around.

      Observations:
IC in South Africa was key to intimidating the Axis to not invading Africa. It stopped the Italians from making any headway at all. SBRs with Heavy bombers are pretty intimidating except that all SBR roles ended up being 1’s or 2’s on both sides. The fighter base in the Philippines was very convenient to deal with Japanese troops on the mainland.

In my games, the UK and US players have never seen Italy as a big threat, so I have used the 1 inf 1 transport buy I1. The UK and US have been forever preoccupied with Big G in Europe, so Italy gets a free ride… for now at least.

Title: How the Mighty Fall… (1942)
      Date: 8:00pm February 9th - 4:30am February 10th
      Special Rules/ Tech: None
      Victor: Allies by concession
Game Length: Approximately 8.5 hours (9 turns?)
Bias: Me (most experienced) as Germany, newbie as Japan, Intermediate player As United States, Intermediate player as UK and Russia
      Description:

Japan solidified it’s southern expanse by moving a Carrier and cruiser to east Indies. Moved onto mainland china, made some gains. Germany made quick gains in Russia. Later, Germany pushed into both Stalingrad and Leningrad. Put choke hold on Russian industry.

Russia, responded with mostly infantry and some tanks to counter German advances. Russia also moved stack of infantry into the backwoods of China.

UK built IC on India UK1, and began pushing on Japanese ground troops very successfully. Later, used India for naval operations to great effect. It retook almost all of it’s colonial possessions. Also increased fleet over time.

United States focused on the Pacific theater and built up large navy to combat the Japanese threat. The Chinese forces slowly pushed back the Japanese ground forces.

Overall, The Axis made great gains in the first half of the game. Russia was on the verge of collapse. But the Germans made a huge gamble for Moscow and ended up depleting it’s forces along the entire Eastern Front. The battle went in favor of Russia, just barely. Soon after the Allies landed in Norway and Finland and retook Karelia.

After this battle, the Russians retook all their possessions and forced back the Japanese tanks coming from the Urals. The Italians opened up Africa, but Russian tanks forced the Suez canal permanently closed.

After the gamble for Moscow, it was a slow downhill decent for the Axis. At the end, France was taken, and an IC was built cementing their position. The UK fleet stood offshore ready to mount more troops. Italy was undefended, Japan made a mad dash for territories last turn, reaching 40 IPC,s but to no real effect.

      Observations:

I hate India. It was what derailed every operation me and the Japanese player thought up. The Chinese front proved to be more formidable than I thought it could have been. It proved one of the most annoying things on the board. I have yet to use NOs or Tech in any game for either scenario and cannot wait to see how it comes out. The 1942 scenario is definitely more balanced than 1941, and it created a very tense game.
