    • RE: Limited Edition?

The game is fun… and I’m looking forward to enjoying it for years.

However, it is terribly overpriced, even at the $63 for which I bought it online.  It’s cardboard and plastic.  Fine.  I don’t need it to be fancy.  But 4 lbs. of cardboard and plastic retailing at $90?  Don’t think so.

      AA42 sold for $30, no?

    • RE: Carrier Question

For that reason I keep my carriers back and out of combat.

Even though carriers have 0 attack value, may they be used in naval combat to enter a hostile seazone and absorb hits while your other units fight?

    • Convoy quirk QUESTION

So, if you take over an island or territory that has a convoy marker, your enemy can now attack that onvoy and reduce your IPCs?

Can the United States collect the IPC income of the Dutch East Indies Islands if the U.S liberates them from Japan?

    • RE: Question about Political Situation

      One more thought.

If Japan does not attack any Allied Power through Japan’s first three turns it’s possible, although very unlikely, that it will only be at war with United States at that point.  If Britain/ANZAC refuse to commence hostilities against Japan and Japan does not attack them or the Dutch either, only the U.S.A and China would be at war with Japan come round 3.

My point is… maybe the British/ANZAC player should be patient (if possible) and let Japan attack first– because a Japanese attack automatically brings America and its huge income into the war, too.

If Britain and/or ANZAC attack Japan first, Japan can retaliate without provoking the U.S, therefore limiting the U.S IPC income until round three.

    • RE: Question about Political Situation

I am clear on most of the Political rules.  My only question was about Japan’s options after a British and/or Anzac attack.

By the way– the rules indicate that war ships may enter a convoy zone without provoking war-- that is because the player must declare his intention to disrupt the convoy.

    • RE: Question about Political Situation

      What about this question:

      Rule for ANZAC National Objectives:

Gain 5 IPCs (one time) for occupying any island or territory originally Japanese.

My question is: Does ANZAC get a one-time shot of 5 IPCs for each island or territory originally Japanese it occupies, or just a single bonus of 5 IPCs for the first such island it occupies and then no further one-time bonuses for additional captures?

I would think you get a one-time bonus for each island or territory originally Japanese, but the word “any” in the rules makes me uncertain.

    • Question about Political Situation

As soon as Japan attacks British, ANZAC, Dutch or American territories, troops, or ships, it’s war against all.

When British or ANZAC attack Japan, it’s war between Japan and those two powers, but not the U.S.

Here’s the question: After a British or ANZAC attack on Japan (which provokes war), may Japan retaliate against British and/or ANZAC on Japan’s next turn without bringing the U.S into the war?

Question #2:  Is disrupting a convoy an act of war?  The rules states it is for the Allies but not for Japan, no?

Also– What national control marker lies on French-Indo China?  France?  Shame on me for even asking that question!

    • RE: A&A 1942 review with pics at BGG

After looking at the pictures and reading available information, this game looks like a step down from AA50.  Smaller map, fewer territories, fewer powers (no Italy and China), etc, etc.  Maybe it will take less time to play?  Moreover, instead of reproducing what appears to be AA Revised in prettier form, I would have preferred another battle-specific edition, like the Battle of Stalingrad or the North African campaign…

    • RE: Axis and Allies 1942 Edition Fact Sheet ( AA42)

I don’t understand why it’s so difficult to release a few details of the new game.  I’m eager to learn how this edition will be different.  I own all the games and miniatures and I’m not sure I need another.  They could convince me, however, by teasing me a little with new features/units/map details, etc., etc.,

    • RE: Is anyone alive at Avalon Hill?

I would suggest not to buy them then.

Now that Avalon Hill has outdone itself with Anniv. Edition, I wonder if the company will produce another variant in 2009.

It usually releases information about coming board games in January.

    • RE: Is anyone alive at Avalon Hill?

I’m curious if they will release any new titles for 2009 in addition to the miniatures.

The Battle of Stalingrad would be great, or Operation: Market Garden, or a revised, enhanced AA: Europe with Italy and a more competitive Battle of the Atlantic.

      Any other ideas?

I think Stalingrad had the most possibilities.  Urban combat, Russian reinforcements getting strafed by Stukas as they cross the Volga, weather could affect game play, the German attempts to reinforce Paulus, Russians creating the Kessel, etc etc.

Congrats to Avalon Hill.  ONE MONTH after releasing the game, it has been removed from the “Upcoming” section of the website.  AA Anniversary Edition now officially exists.

    • RE: 1941 or 1942

My issue with 1941 is that Germany doesn’t have enough units on the board.  The invasion of the Soviet Union entailed 3 million men.  In France, Germany has no anti-aircraft gun, no aircraft, etc.  Britain can land units in France on turn 1 or 2.  Northwest Europe is impossible to defend.

That being said, I’ve won 5 games out of 5 with the Axis.

    • RE: Go For Africa!

It worked.  It helped that my opponents using the Allies are less experienced in the game than me.

But Italy’s success in Africa helped a great deal and by the time my opponents had surrendered, Italy was collecting 19 IPCs plus 10 National Objective Bonuses per turn.

Of course, had the dice gone the other way….
