    • Eastern Front Broken - $5 German tanks too powerful, income disparity a problem

After several games it’s clear… the $5 German tanks unleash an unbeatable terror in Russia, and Germany more or less has no reason to build any other unit on the eastern front - ever.

Russia at full income of $48 faces Germany averaging $65-70 + the Axis minors of $15 or so.
-Excluding the fact that Russia has to “warm” up it’s income,
-Excluding the fact that Russia starts with far less units…
-Excluding the fact that Russia only has 2 factories able to produce 20 units, (1 which they will shortly lose), facing double or better production capacity.

How is Russia supposed to compete against double it’s income, overwhelming industrial capacity, and cheap tanks on the eastern front?

      The task is impossible.

Suggested Remedy options (pick 1 or a combination)

      • Russia gets it’s full income right from the start
      • Russia gets a factory in Stalingrad or Caucasus
      • Germany pays $6 for tanks
      • Russia gets $2 infantry
      • Russia starts with more than 2 tanks (How about 6?)

    • RE: Commandos attack at 3+1? or 2+1?

      @Moose11:

U.S. Marines and Airborne cost 5 each.  The commando is a combination of the two.  For a cost of 5, this would mean that the Commando is more powerful than a U.S. marine?  I believe the intent was that all special forces attack like regular infantry until they perform their specialty (either a naval assault, or a parachute drop).  Then they obtain a +1.

In fairness… I would prefer to have tanks that attack at 6 defend at 6 and move 2 for the $5 like the Germans do.

That’s what’s really overpowered in global 39 IMO.

    • RE: Commandos attack at 3+1? or 2+1?

      Looking at the setup cards:

      -German paratroopers attack at 2*.
      -British Commando’s attack at 3*

The * meaning = during an amphibious assault, or airborne drop the unit gets +1 to the base.

I think that’s cut and dry?

As the alternative to this logic is that german paratroopers attack at 1.

It should also be noted that the Axis get a TON of advantages, 5 dollar tanks and subs for example.  The commando is the only decent British unit for the value…

Variable… Any chance. We can get a non PDF copy of those rules?  My gaming group could do with some more clarifications posted in the book (from forum discussions.). As-well, it would also be helpful if the book was organized a little differently to find things easier. (For us).

Let me know friend.  Our crew plays this regulairly and would love to update it, let you have a look and see if it’s good enough for 6.2!

We just need to official my close some debates. :)

      Thanks.

Considered the population was sub 100; and assuming 50% female and 50% male.  They sent 10% of their citizens off to the war effort!

      That’s a big deal!

    • RE: Last Confederate hold out - was in upstate New York!?!

      @General:

Not an expert on the New York State Constitution, but I think like any state secession/partition you need approval of the legislature in order to secede (much like the disputed legality of the Confederate states seceding). The secession should have never been recognized in the first place. As a resident of New York City, I would put my mortgage on a secession vote passing if it were as simple as letting the city’s popular vote decide. But Albany would never let it happen.

In my perfect world, the NYC metropolitan area (NYC, lower Hudson valley, north Jersey and western CT) would be its own state.

I believe the eastern counties of Colorado did stage symbolic votes of secession from the state over gun/marijuana laws among other things but they’re not going anywhere

      Veers…

No offense, but isn’t the whole concept that “the government” has to “allow you the right” to secede a bit preposterous?

It’s not like Abe Lincoln “allowed” or “approved” states like virginia to secede; and as mark says - they took up arms!

By the argument presented - America wasn’t legally “allowed” to secede from Britain, does that mean their secession should not be recognized?

    • Kamikaze's

The rules read that Kamikaze’s can fly their maximum distance, and attack at 8.

      But this is extremely vague!

      The rules don’t clarify:

      • if they MUST be lost. (IE, they could fly maximum distance and land on a carrier)?
      • if they roll 8 just once, or if they attack through each round of the battle until they are taken as a casualty or the battle is won
      • if they choose targets or not when they score a hit.
      • if they can be taken as a casualty or are already considered dead.

    • Can Neutrals be activated by Air transported infantry?

Can Neutrals be activated by Air transported infantry only?

And do the bombers have to end in the same zone as the infantry that are unloaded.  Or can they “drop” the infantry and leave?

Example - Leningrad is captured by Germany, and in the NCM phase of the same turn, 2 german bombers with 2 regular infantry in Paris, fly to spain and activate two of it’s territories for the axis.

UK liberates an original communist chinese territory.

Is it liberated for Communist China?  OR can UK choose to give it to Nationalist China?  (Much like Russia only liberates for communist China)

    • Minor Axis Capital Captures

If Helsinki is captured, or Siam Captured, do the allies get the income from the minor Axis have on hand?  (3 for Siam? or no?)

What about the other axis minor’s?

Also - do you have to capture ALL of a minor’s territories (Like all 3 Finnish territories) or just the capital to sack the income?

    • Commandos attack at 3+1? or 2+1?

There was a debate in a recent game about Commando’s.

      The card reads

      Commandos - Attack 3*  Defense 4.

With rules - “During amphibious assaults, or airborne drops, commandos get +1 attack”.

The commonwealth player took that as his units attacked at 3 all the time, and 4 when doing amphibious assaults or airborne drops.

The axis player took that as the commando’s only attacked at 2; and 3 when during amphibious assualts or airborne drops.

      Ruling?

    • RE: I have lost russia turn 5 for the last 4 games in a row….

Build more infantry and less tanks.

Also - A dirty trick to try and pull off, would be to allow your opponent to seperate his planes from his ground unit stack when they move up.  (Unless he’s using Italy for some extra coverage).

If you can strafe just his ground force, with all of your ground force, for a turn or two, then retreat,  sometimes that can get a few extra units your way.

    • RE: It so happens that I shook a hand that shook Hitler's!

      Marc,

Fair comments! Some of the details are hazy. I will elaborate with the bit more that I know.

Ray did say the event occurred at night. (3 in the morning ish), and was very impromptu; in his words “It was like a photo-op”, “I just happened to be there”.

He also noted that when the allies first started bombing  Berlin, the only air raid shelter was in (or around) the Reichstag.  Now, this is not to say that he was in the Reichstag shelter during a bombing, or that this event even occurred there.  I didn’t have enough to “clarify” all those details.  But it’s possible this was near his home.

In fairness to Marc, I had my own “skepticism” at the time, with concerns surrounding the details with his father? How likely is it that a Wehrmacht Serving dad would have been at home during this time?  Who knows…

I also didn’t ask if Ray was Hitler Youth.  That’s assumed. As my experience meeting people who may have been HY members, is that they DON’T want people knowing, and usually deny anything to do with it.  Ray was 9 or 10 years old in Berlin in 1945, it’s a garauntee.

For the record - Ray wasn’t advertising, I had to dig for about 45 minutes before I started getting somewhere!

My gut says the story is as true as it seems.  A quick google image search of Hitler+Kids shows photos of him meeting children and hugging them etc.  And we all know how the Fuhrer was about kids!

Of course… unless we launch a formal inquest! We’ll never know!  I’ll probably get the chance to talk to Ray again in the near future.

Any specific questions I should ask?

    • It so happens that I shook a hand that shook Hitler's!

      Wow,

What a crazy world!  I was at a large work related litigation/insurance process recently, and lawyers doing what lawyers do, we were separated in to different groups and left for hours at a time, whilst the lawyers wheeled and dealed.

In my room was a retired inspector named Ray, who although an independent in the case, was lumped in with our group.  We got to talking about his career, and living in Canada, bla bla bla, and it became evident that he was alot older than he looked.

At some point it came about that he lived in Berlin as a child post WWII. So of course I had more questions! :P  As my grandfather served as an air traffic controller during the Berlin airlift!

“Ray” went on about the Airlift for sometime, and how he said the allies literally saved his family from starvation. And he talked about how they would bomb the schoolyards during the day with lumps of coal, and that the coal was then carried off to the power plants, to provide the city 2 hours of electricity a day. Etc etc, it was fascinating!

At some point I impolitely asked what year he was Born in… He said 1935.

And then of course… the infamous question…  Living in Berlin, from 1935 to 1945… did he ever see Adolf in a parade? or at a speech? I mean surely… the dude SURVIVED the Battle of Berlin after all!

So it turns out… a bit embarrassed to tell me, Ray acknowledge that at some point in 1944, in a cold air raid shelter, he actually met the fuhrer and shook his hand during a photo op!

As a kid, with the nazi propaganda and all, Ray was excited at the time about it.  He came home and told his father “I am never going to wash my hand!”  Ray’s father promptly told him that if Ray didn’t wash his hand right then and there, and tell NO ONE of what happened, his father might never speak to him again! LOL!  (Ray mentioned his father was regular Wehrmacht, and fought the Canadians along the boot of Italy, Ray’s father in law was also in the same battle on the allied side!).

Of course… I’d already shook Ray’s hand with NO knowledge of the living history in front of me.  I can’t imagine the difficulties he and his family faced during those times.

At the meeting, Ray’s was put on the hot spot, with lawyers coming at him from every angle. Someone said privately “I think he’s going to break under the pressure.”

I laughed and said “you have no idea what he can handle”

You know what could be considered the WORST of the worst?

      OPERATION PAPERCLIP.

Where scientists, in particular, Japanase Scientists ,who had mountains of data gathered on thousands of human experiments (chemical/biological weapon research), traded the data they gathered FOR THEIR FREEDOM.  Spending the rest of their lives in comfort.

      Just saying…
