      @Der:

      I saw Dunkirk tonight - it was pretty good, not great. One problem was that I had a hard time understanding the British accents - my wife and I were only catching about 1/2 of what they said. Then the scenes that I expected to be epic were kind of underwhelming - I saw about 7 or 8 rescue boats in any one scene, not hundreds. Men were lined up on the beach by the hundreds, not thousands. CGI would have helped a lot there. Some scenes were drawn out way too long, like the Spitfire pilot that ran out of gas seemed to glide forever - my wife and I finally chuckled “What? He’s STILL gliding?” Another strange thing was that no Germans were shown (other than their machines) until the very last scene and even then they were out of focus. Was this to make them more scary and inhuman? Maybe. Then all the soldiers were really hard to tell apart - I kept thinking “Is that the one guy? No - I think that’s the other guy.” Then to make it even harder everyone got coated in black oil. It was still pretty good - I’ve seen worse…it was worth paying for to support the genre.

      He likely traded altitude for velocity which would allow him to stay in the air longer but that was a bit poorly handled. Most of the timing synced up fairly well except for that.

      Caught “Dunkirk” yesterday and it is a solid/good war picture. The issue for me is its biggest strength is also it’s biggest weakness. It is a rather tight picture with a small primary cast. So you follow a few guys through various spans of time which the film handles editing together very well without turning the picture into straight up flashbacks and “Groundhog Day” sorts of repeats.

      But this closeness also doesn’t always convey the particular scale that is being dealt with or the broader events.

      Very tense movie with terrific flying sequences. Way too much shaky-cam though especially given that it is already on the water. Solid film.

    • RE: Cheaper Memoir 44 style games?

      The system is called “Command and Colors.” https://boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Command_and_Colors_System

      None of the games are particularly cheap although not particularly expensive for games with lots of pieces either. They all come in around the MSRP of Memoir. Your best bet is to try and find the first version of Battlecry on eBay.

      I just did a quick search and there is a used Memoir set up for $45 with free shipping and the used Battlecry were all in that same range with shipping. You should expect this sort of thing to run you in the $35 to $70 range.

      This time of the year you should be able to scrounge that up in less than a week of mowing lawns.

      @Imperious:

      I’ve seen one woman with a tattoo that was elevated in hotness by the tattoo. Usually the tattoo drags her down.

      Was it a tramp stamp on her lower back by chance? If so you would find her a a bar nearly every night.

      No, it wasn’t. She had a “curly cue” sort of thing on the top outside of her foot. It was tasteful and I remember largely because my reaction to it was such a surprise and very much atypical. She was already very attractive though.

      I’m going to go with “Not.” I’ve seen one woman with a tattoo that was elevated in hotness by the tattoo. Usually the tattoo drags her down. The pin-up goes on the plane not the plane on the pin-up.

      Well think about all the reasons it was a mess to you before you watched it so many times you figured out a way to do the writer’s work for them. Start with the black goo that is whatever the plot needs it to be.

      I will grant though that Ridley Scott may on some level be one of the greatest directors ever. While he has to bear some responsibility for that complete and utter turd of a script it is the most polished execution of a horrible script I’ve ever seen. The dude knows how to shoot and edit a movie.

      “Prometheus” supplied enough motivation for me to not see the follow up. Talk about a movie that couldn’t keep from crawling up its own backside.

      @ABWorsham:

      I enjoyed Kong. If you love 1950 monster movies you will love the flick. Building up to a Godzilla and Kong film.

      Guardians was good. I laughed many times.

      I enjoyed Kong Skull Island as it had aspirations of being more than a “B” monster movie. I was a bit disappointed though that there was all this nice build up but they got to the island and dispensed with the foreplay and couldn’t hold their wad. Jackson’s character felt a bit forced but pretty entertaining flick though. Loved Shea Whigham as the grizzeled heli pilot Cole. “There was no tactical precedent.”

      It would have been better in my opinion as a longer movie.

    • RE: Placing USA units in China?

      @zak:

      Thanks so much guys, and thanks for clarifying frimmel.

      One other sub-question I have; it says that the US can build new IC and can only produce the amount shown on that territory there. If that territory does not have a number can they produce only 1 unit there?

      Only the amount shown on the territory would be zero in the case of no number. See: http://www.harrisgamedesign.com/pdf/A&A_Pacifi_FAQ.pdf

      @Loose:

      @frimmel:

      The US can not place US units in China. China does not have ICs. China only gets China INF based on how many territories are controlled and whether the Burma Road is open. The best the US can do is typically to land aircraft built at an IC in China.

      I am by no means an expert, and I am not trying to be critical of your answer ( I am too new here to be taken seriously) but I am currently playing a lot of Pacific.    I am a little confused by your reply.  China starts with an IC, that is where it’s new units are introduced.  I know that only the US can build an IC in this game.   I really did not think that the US could build a complex in China.  This was probably just a “typo” that maybe should have read "The best that the US can do is typically land aircraft built at an IC outside of China….or I am just missing something?

      Nope. You’re correct. I just forgot that an IC was actually placed on the board for China. Either way the US can not buy units and build them in China.

      @LHoffman:

      Just saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

      Thought the first was overrated, but this one was actually quite good.

      GOTG 2 is the strongest sequel after Winter Soldier. With the first GOTG it makes the strongest 1-2 of all the Marvel films. The first Captain America is my favorite but it’s 1-2 are very tonally different.

    • RE: Attack question

      @Anzac:

      Hey guys started playing BOTB again… When attacking can you attack as many times as you like. For example when usa has made all attacks you pass the inititive to the german player. After germany has done all attacks can you then attack again with usa? And then continue with germany again. Just bit confused about what it says in the rule book… Thanks guys

      The player with initiative gets to declare and perform the first attack. Then the other player may declare and perform an attack. The option then passes back to the player with initiative. When both players pass consecutively you move on to the next phase. Each hex may only be activated for attacks once. All of your hexes may attack if you have sufficient supplies. On the first turn only Germany may perform attacks. (See Phase 2 beginning on page 14 of the rulebook: http://www.axisandallies.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Axis-Allies-Battle-of-the-Bulge.pdf)

      All of these attacks make up a single turn of attacks.

      DO NOT bring rules baggage from other games into BOTB to resolve any confusion or questions you have. You will be incorrect.  :-)

      @General:

      https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2017/5/5/rise-of-the-empire/

      Very intrigued by this despite my feelings for Rogue One. There’s certainly enough in there to warrant interest, from individual tactics decks to OT elements like Jabba, Motti and Imperial Bunkers.

      I’m pretty lukewarm on Rogue One as well and this expansion has a bit of an air of “The licencor made us do it” but it does look like some interesting additions.

      My big curiosity is if it is really an expansion or more a alternate rules set. I get the idea you’ll play with either the original mission cards OR the expansion mission cards. It seems likely there will be some sort of modularity to it.

    • RE: Old Avalon Hill games

      @Wolfshanze:

      They are not the forerunners of Axis and Allies, they don’t resemble A&A anymore than A&A resembles Candyland.

      Those old Avalon Hill games date from the 1970s mostly, some from the early 80s, and I used to collect and play them back in those times. They are the original hard core wargames… if you were to break out and play Panzer Leader for instance,  other than it being a WW2 game, you’d find little in common with A&A.

      Point taken although in my defense I was using “forerunner” very liberally.

    • RE: MOVIES 2017

      “Logan” is not a warm fuzzy tale despite getting some dirt in your eyes here and there. Does a lot of things I’d wish other comic book movies would do. Smaller tale, focused and not trying to be part of some sort of trilogy or shoehorn in previews for a bunch of other movies, personal story, not another origin story, not trying to shoehorn in 50 years of the character, fine performances, action sequences mostly coherent and bloody/graphic, is actually about something.

      Villain is a little weak but that isn’t what the movies about.

      I didn’t think it was too long.

      Good movie. Very good “comic book” movie. Certainly the best Wolverine movie and makes a strong argument for the best of the X-men franchise. Well above Last Stand and Apocalypse. Recommended.

      Not for kids, particularly little kids. Lots of f-bombs and adult themes and graphic violence (decapitations and severed limbs and claws through skulls.) No nudity/sex though.

    • RE: Old Avalon Hill games

      I have not played any of those but they are the forerunners to A&A. They very likely are thirty or more years old. I don’t think most of that has been in print since the eighties and a few of them may be even older. Some might have had turn of the century-ish printings. Looking them up on boardgamegeek should help you sort it out.

      This is the third version of BOTB for example: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/5607/battle-bulge
