Just wanted to check a sub rule. If a sub goes up against other non transport, non destroyer type ships (in this instance a damaged carrier and cruiser), can the sub keep doing a surprise attack till the opposition are destroyed without them firing back? That’s how my friend read the rules.

Winning Conditions
The way I read the winning conditions for the allies, is that they have to take Tokyo, Berlin and Rome which seems a bit tougher than the 8/6 victory cities of the Axis.

RE: Turn 2 Quandary
@Cmdr:
8 Transports total is what, I feel, you need to move your troops around SE Asia.
4 to get from Japan to French Indo-China
4 to get from French Indo-China back to JapanThat’s 8 ground units a round. Leaving you 2 open builds for ships or aircraft as needed.
I’ve thought quit a bit about this and it’s the time it’ll take to get units to where I want them. 1 turn to purchase, another to transport. The minor IC is cheaper than the extra 2 transports.
One if the reasons I chose FIC is because the Chinese can’t reach it. It will also take the British a couple of turns to be able to reach so I should have more than enough defence to hold them off and gradually push them back. I’m trying to slowly reduce the mount the British can earn which is why I really want to get Malaya next turn. So they will struggle to make much headway hopefully.
-
RE: Turn 2 Quandary
I would prefer to IC Malaya except I haven’t taken it yet. Just the seazone. I do take your point though that if you put an IC somewhere, you will end up protecting it. I’ll look at how I can manage without. It’s just how many Transports I’ll really need to get ground troops to where I want them I guess.
Oh and Cow, there are two fighters on London but only the French ground troops left (and the AAA guns) and a mech infantry. Other than their range, I don’t know what the airbase really offers the UK as with no navy they can’t scramble.
-
RE: Turn 2 Quandary
Just a couple more questions. I bought 3 transports and just trying to decide where to transport and deploy troops to. As I’m looking to build a minor IC in FIC then that is a good place to deploy. Alternatives are Phillipines and launch from there to another DEI island or Austrailia.
-
RE: Turn 2 Quandary
Thanks Cow. Will look at alternatives for the Airbase for Korea. Tempted by 2 Destroyers and 2 subs.
Do I go for the DEI islands or Malaya? Is Australia worth making a play for? I also bought 3 transports in J1 and looking to transport troops to FIC. China have almost all their troops in Yunnan and will take a decent sized force to take it. Not something I will have for a few turns…
For Germany, was looking to to go with maybe 4 or 5 transports worth of troops for the UK but the rest I was looking to go towards Novograd. Depends how well Soviets buy and the US. If US buys all in Pacific, I’ll take all to UK and then G4 move to Canada.
Italy, I’ll look at bombing the Airbase but with no navy to defend, unsure it’s worth it as they can’t scramble anyway?
Bought the destroyer :)

Turn 2 Quandary
Just started my second Global 1940’s game (first as axis).
Germany
Opened up with Sealion opener for Germany. Managed to eliminate 109/110/111 fleets, took Normandy, France, Yugoslavia and all set for buying 10 Transports. Will 100% stick with Sealion but don’t think I will need quite so many units attacking as my friend didn’t buy any ground troops for the UK. In fact everything was deployed in South Africa.
So far, UK took out Italian Destroyer in Sz and the forces in Tobruk. Unfortunately I withdrew against Sz109 so managed to take out the destroyer but not the transport. My friend has retaken Normandy using it but has meant that there are less troops in the UK.
I have 4 Tanks, 2 Artillery and 1 Infantry in France and no ground troops in Holland / W Germany. I haven’t taken Southern France yet and want the Germans to take it. Suspect that the French will survive a further round as likely to use Artillery and Infantry against the 2 Infantry in Normandy (along with air support) and move some ground troops from Italy into France. I did want to keep the tanks for the attack on the UK.
Because my friend hasn’t left much in the UK, I am hoping to also attack Novogorod by Sea. End of Soviet turn there is a tank, 2 Mech Infantry, 3 Infantry and a couple of fighters/tac bomber.
Japan
Japan followed Cow’s guide to the letter. Everything went perfectly with 1 exception which was I failed to take 1 Chinese territory (Hunnan) due to some shocking dice rolls. I did move a destroyer/Carrier from Caroline Islands to Borneo to protect the transport though.
Situation is now that US has bought 4 Subs, Carrier and some Air and deployed on West Coast and moved all existing fleet from Hawaii and West Cost to Midway. Currently Japan only has 1 Battleship, Destroyer, Sub in Sz 6 but the rest can all be recalled before the US next move.
QUANDARY: Purchases, I intend to buy a minor IC and deploy in French Indo China. Airbase to go on to Korea so I can scramble a total of 6 fighters. I was then going to buy 2 subs (Got 40 to spend) to use as canon fodder should he attack any time soon. Worried about US ability to outspend me if focus is all on Pacific. Intention might be to move German fleet to East Coast to distract and move spending away from Pacific.
I am now poised with 6 troops on Borneo/Phillipines to either take 3 of the DEI, Malaya or I can get 4 and with some sea/air try and take Queensland. Queensland appeals as feel reasonably confident that I can take Anzac capital fairly quickly but Malaya is also enticing me. Although I can get more points from DEI, taking Malaya denies Anzac a bonus and further reduces British by 3. I also long term want to put a minor IC here as well.
Italy
Situation is that Italian Fleet is intact in Sz95/97. UK Med Fleet is intact. It focused all it’s effort on Sz96 and I got a bad roll. All forces in Tobruk have been lost. Currently, UK Med fleet is in Sz96 and has 1 Carrier, 2 Fighters, 1 Destroyer, 2 Cruisers and a transport. Using a calculator, with 2 Fighters, 1 Strat Bomber, 1 Battleship, 2 Cruisers, 1 Destroyer, 1 Sub, I should be able to win but likelihood is that it will be close. Also means I can’t take on French fleet.
So unsure what to buy and what to do. Suspect it’ll be 3 Mech Infantry to help support German ground troops against Soviets. But I am tempted to just head towards the states, take some troops, take gibralter on my way and either move onto the Pacific map or head to the east coast. Could try and take Central US potentially.
Advice appreciated. :)

RE: Cow guides polling
Picked up Europe/Pacific 40.2 a couple weeks ago, and running through a few of your openers was extremely useful. Thanks for putting in the time and effort!
I’ve got my fingers crossed that you do something from the Allies’ perspective.
Same. The Germany playbook focused more on Soviets than the sealion although I managed to find another guide. I greatly appreciate the specific movements that were laid out in the Japan guide although the J2+ seemed a little vague.
Currently playing my first Axis turn. (Started yesterday). Followed Sealion and Cow’s Japanese moves. All worked out according to plan with only 1 tiny exception (109 transport survived).
Really appreciate the effort and it’s a massive help to those who are new to the game

Malaya J1
I’m trying to formulate my strategy for my next Global 1940 game and I’m looking to see how I can take Malaya on J1. It look slike it’s limited to strategic bombers and the navy in Sz20. Is that all I can use?
-
RE: How do you keep Italy strong?
I’ve been thinking about this too. I can see how I can take 109/110/111 but without risking a lot of aircraft, I can’t see how I can take out the 91/106 units as well.
MY strategy was to take UK so Italy could slowly build and take Egypt and to help push more troops into USSR as a follow up to the Germans. I1 to take out the French fleet and if possible, anything left of UK Fleet. I2, to take Gibralter. IF I can take Egypt and UK has fallen, Italy can feast on Africa and Middle East. -
RE: The Japan Playbook
@Cow:
airbase 2x minor factory 1 infantry or 1 airbase, 1 naval base, 1 minor factory (this means you are doing J3 calcutta. SHAN STATE or Yunnan hold is a must (this is where your air lands so you would have to kill everything around it). If USA is at Midway -1 MINOR FACTORY + 4 inf. Kamikaze to prevent bombardments. Also you need all naval units cleared that could block your attack (position a fleet at Java or malaya and/or burma to prevent blockers if necessary). Put all available units in range of India in range. placement. airbase needs to go to french indo china or kwangsi.
Where would you suggest the airbase/ minor IC’s/Naval base go? I was thinking of trying to take Malaya J1 and putting a Minor IC there. Close to India and Chinese can’t get there. Already has a naval base as well.

RE: Convoy question G1 Southern France
Who takes out the French ships? Italy? If Germany were to take Southern France, wouldn’t the convoy get calculated at the collect income phase of Germany’s turn?
-
RE: Opening move thoughts.
Bit of both. This may not be optimal but I’m hoping it is still a reasonably good strategy. Bold but not too ambitious and not over extending myself.
-
RE: Opening move thoughts.
Interesting, carrying cash from the second turn and spending on transports on turn 3. If UK reinforced his islands, blow on mechs and tanks, otherwise transports, i think i’ll be stealing this idea.
What ships do you usually build for a sealion germany? I often see 1 carrier, 1 destroyer and 1 sub (i think) on turn 1, grouped with the initial cruiser and maybe 1-2 surviving subs; is this enough to protect your transports from UK fighters/bombers?
By delaying a round, I am hoping that my friend won’t stack too much more in the UK. In fact I don’t think he would be expecting me to do this. Was looking to buy a destroyer and cruiser in the first 2 turns along with some more ground troops. The other reason to delay is that I wanted to not leave myself too weak after the UK has fallen and also I want to see if I can be in a position to push the Soviets back even while launching an attack on the UK itself.
Word of caution is that both my friend and I are novices so I will let people know how I get on with this.

RE: Opening move thoughts.
Thanks for the answers.
I’ve since revised my strategy completely. It’s a hybrid and tries to retain flexibility as much as possible.
G1 Take Finland, Bulgaria, S France and France. Take out UK Fleet at 109/110/111.
G2 I won’t buy the 9/10 Transports. Instead will spend as normal and carry 40. Will look to take E Poland, Bessarabia, Baltic States and Karelia and whatever is in 115/97. This is all dependent on what the UK does in it’s 1st turn.
G3 Buy Transports.
G4 will Attack either London or Novogorod.J1 Will take Shantung/Jehol/Hunan/Yunnan Buy Minor IC and 2 Transports. Will move main fleet and 2 Transports to Sz36, 1 Transport/Cruiser to Sz 43 and Fleet from Sz 35 to 44. I won’t attack with these assets.
J2 Attack from Sz 36 into Sz 37/42 and from Sz43 into 41. Will use 2 Transports from Japan to Amhib into Kwagtung and Phillipines with air/naval support. Purchases will be split Navy/Mech Infantry. Possible Minor IC for Korea or will carry for purchase of a minor IC in Kwagtung the following turn.
J3+ Will split Navy between Phillipines and Malaya with a couples of Destroyers in Japan. All purchases will be split between cheap naval units and Mech Infantry. Emphasis will be to hold off UK/China and take Sydney.I1 Will buy a Fighter. Will look to either destroy remaining UK fleet at Sz 96 or the French fleet. Will try to get Troops to Tobruk. Will move from Ethiopia to Anglo Egypt and from Tobruk to Alexandria.
I2 Will try to amphib assault (assuming I’ve cleared French/UK Navy) Egypt and attack from Anglo Egypt and Alexandria. -
RE: Opening move thoughts.
Would be buying Mech Infantry and possibly upgrade IC to Major.
Remember that since it’s not a original territory it cannot be a major
The Kiangsu territory is an original or have I missed something? Or is that you can only upgrade Minor IC’s if they were not purchased? Which isn’t how I read the rules.
Ok so here are some general questions then.
What is better to attack with my German subs…106 or 109?
How can Italy clear the French and UK fleet in the Med assuming that Sz 96 / 97 have been hit? How can Germany assist?
Is it worth targeting Sz 91?
Can you close the straight if you occupy Morocco and Gibraltar?
Is there a way for Germany to take Southern France in addition to Normandy / France?
-
RE: Opening move thoughts.
Your aircraft cannot reach Hawaii J1, so you fight with the transported units only. It is possible to take and hold Hawaii J2 but it requires a very specific opening and you need to know how to follow it up so I wouldn’t recommend it for a beginner.
I was assuming aircraft that can land on the carrier can reach which they can. I could even assume that I will lose 2-3 and take more than the basic 4/6 (depending on whether I take 2 or 3 carriers).
But I do take your point.
-
RE: Opening move thoughts.
The plan sounds ok but realistically you cannot take Hawaii J1. Even if you send everything that can reach the odds are very poor. Even if you did manage to capture it the US could easily counterattack. The earliest you can take hawaii is J2 and even that is a risky move.
I’m not overly experienced in 1940 Global so I take what you said at face value though looking at what Japan starts with, I can get every ship in Sz 6 to Hawaii although with just 1 transport admittedly. I will have a minimum of 4 fighters and I will lose aircraft to take it I admit. If I go with the carrier from Sz 33 as well, I hope that any naval hits I can take on my carriers/Battleship. Assuming I can take it, it is dependent on what the Americans invest in T1 as to whether I can hold it T2.
The alternative is to keep the navy at Sz 6 / 33. Use some as naval bombardments for Phillipines and Kwang Tang amphib assault. Then J2 blockade the DEI as much as possible and try to take Calcutta.

Opening move thoughts.
Will be starting my 2nd global game but this time as the axis. There is plenty of info on German opening moves but a little unsure about Japan and Italy.
Was considering a J1 DoW and taking the philipines, Hawaii, Hunnan and Yunnan. Was looking to buy a minor IC and place in Shanghai and a couple of transports. J2, I would look to press the advantage with the US fleet. J2 I would look to move planes to Philipines and try an assault on Queensland, depending on whats in there. Would try to reinforce Hunnan/Yunnan if possible. Would be buying Mech Infantry and possibly upgrade IC to Major.
I need just 6 cities on the Pacific map. And with Manilla, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hawaii by end of J1, then I will focus on the next easiest. From Japan, as long as I hold Hawaii, I can route transports safely from Japan to Queensland via Hawaii or Phillipines. J3, I will try to move more air to Queensland to take NSW. In fact, the more I consider this, I wonder if just buying ground troops/transports J1 might well be the best thing to do. As the allies in the game I’ve just finished, Japan didn’t DoW till beginning of turn 4. UK/ANZAC already had the DEI and ANZAC bought 1 Destroyer/1 Sub every turn for ages and that helped build a sizeable fleet in addition to the US fleet which dissuaded the Japanese considerably. I consider an early J1 DoW to be an advantage before the UK builds up Calcutta and the US has built up it’s fleet.
Italy, I would invest in naval, so probably just a destroyer. Would try as best I could to wipe out what is left od the UK navy in the Med. Expect my friend to clear Sz 96/97 because that’s what I did to great effect. Looking for ways to counter this. This is probably my greatest question as Italy. I intend to focus purely on getting North Africa and Egypt especially. I will be looking at how to drop more units in N Africa and won’t be looking to support German troops against the Soviets much.
Germany will be doing a Sealion but I don’t think my friend will be reinforcing the UK on T1 that much as he, like me is fairly inexperienced and I don’t think he would be expecting me to assault the UK so quickly. So I may not have to use all 10 transports purchased in G2 against the UK. With air support as well, I am hoping I will be able to get away with just 6. My other main question is how do I get rid of the Russian Navy in Sz 115…
