    • RE: Containing the Ottomans

      @ghr2:

      I like Russia taking out Mesopotamia as well.  UK can clean up any survivors and reinforce the defense.

      Russia can certainly pull this off but I think they have to strike a balance between the amount of troops they send south and how many they keep to defend Moscow.  The Ottomans are an easy target but as long as you can keep them out of Egypt and India, Germany and AH are the real threat.

    • RE: Tanks - worth purchasing?

      Since I’m used to the more traditional tank rules of A&A, when I saw the $6 price tag and attack:2/Def:1 I was appalled.  However, I’ve warmed up to them after a few games.  Having at least 3-4 tanks combined with large amounts of artillery supported by fighters make a very potent combination.  Also, they will help save your artillery as your infantry are whittled away.  You just have to be very carefull about leaving them open to a counter attack since you must have at least one inf unit in each army group.

      @WILD:

      The Austrians need ground units though to keep their supply line going so IDK. I think I have a chance to take parts of Africa w/Turks, but unless I can figure out a way to stop the the Brits from reinforcing it they’ll just retake what I get, and will liberate Egypt as soon as I move out. The Turks in Africa is what I wanted as the game started though, so I’m very interested to see how it works out.

      BTW my Germans haven’t fair to well in Africa (like I said that G1 attack on S Africa didn’t go to well), and my last inf is making its last stand (but did just survive a 2 inf French attack, and killed a French unit LOL).

      I think the Ottomans are the only CP that can have any lasting effect in Africa.  Through some creative movements and lucky dice rolls the Germans can be a thorn in the Allies’ side but they will fall sooner or later.  Keep us posted on how this turned out for you.

      I also like the small dice.  They are pretty useful when battles have large numbers of units.  After a game of 1914 the normal size dice start to feel too large and “clunky”.

      @texasranger97:

      I was wondering if the chips fit with the one from 1940 2nd edition

      they unfortunately do not

      @texasranger97:

      Are the roundels the same size?

      Yes

      @texasranger97:

      Infantry sculpt are the same size then other games?

      Roughly yes

      @texasranger97:

      And could somebody upload a picture of a dice from 1914 with one from 1940 to see the size difference?

      I dont have a picture but I know that 1914’s dice are 12mm while other AA games are 16mm

    • RE: Axis and Allies 1914 FAQ/Question and Answer Thread

      @TheVenocWarlord:

      Here is what I do for contested territories:

      When an army moves in to contest a territory, I immediately place that attacking army’s control marker on the territory upside down. I then also immediately deduct the lost income on the chart to show the contested situation. Much simpler to show the changes.

      I believe the rule book (p.15) has you deduct the income immediately also.  Remembering to do that will save a lot of time when calculating income.  I use orange chips from HBG to identify contested territories.  I guess you could also use the grey or red chips from other AA games.

      Perhaps a limit on how many IPC’s can be spent or units can be produced in India could make Africa more dynamic.

      @Flashman:

      The other main objective is that the SZs bordering Africa have no mines, which should make naval combat more lively; the CP fleets can link up, or invade north Africa.

      That definitely think that could change things up a lot.  Those mines in SZ17 and the large allied fleets make any early AH naval plans difficult.

      @Flashman:

      I’ve suggested redividing the Med as follows:

      I like that you have SZ20 divided which would allow the Ottomans to control sea movement through the straight.I’ve wondered why the game has Constantinople spanning across a single SZ which allows enemy ships to travel through.  Hopefully it was a balance issue and not a mistake.

      However, I like that the original map has Rome only adjacent to SZ17.  It may be too easy for AH to take it on your map.  Unless the allies take out their navy of course.

      Adding Askari recruitment completely changes the dynamic in Africa, with original tts worth defending.

      Is this a new rule in the works?

    • African Strats

      Anyone had any success as the CP in Africa?  I’ve only seen Germany get corned by Italy, UK, and France and eventually eliminated, which is historically acurate I guess.  Except for German East Africa which I believe was never fully taken by the allies.

      The only potential objective I can identify is the Ottomans can contest and maybe even take Egypt.  However, India looks like it should be the first target.

      @Chacmool:

      If scandinavia was pressed smaller like the did with Africa it would have been possible to make central Europe larger.
      I also agree about needless Russian tts in the east.

      I agree.  If they scaled down the size of those and Spain, maybe even the size of SZ 17 and some of the various Russian territories, then there could be a little more breathing room in Europe.

    • Game Board Frustration

      I’m not one to complain too much but after two complete games of 1914 I’ve found the layout of the board very aggravating.  I don’t understand why the western European territories are so tiny while some like Spain, Arabia, Norway, Sweden, the Russian territories, etc. are so Huge!  There were so many units crowded into western Europe that we had to remove them from the board and place them on labled pieces of paper.  Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the game but it just puzzles me why the board was designed like this.

      Anyone else agree, or have a theory about the reason?

      I’ve considered attacking the Russian fleet but it just seems way more advantageous to take out the UK’s.

      @aidancole:

      how many territories did Germany lose while trying to take out Russia?. in a game i played i send both a large German force and most of the Austrians against Russia and i still could not take it had it to Moscow but could not defeat them as they can build there every turn right in the battle.  The reason i ask how many territories Germany lost in the west is my line with France was secure the whole time, did not lose a German Provence, dose this mean i should of send much more Germans? i just find its hard to conceive Germany doing Russia in without Austrian help and still holding against France and Britain.

      Alsace and Belgium were almost constantly contested and were even taken by France a few times.  Austria helped out by distracting Russia in the Ukraine and Romania with the Ottomans did the same is Sevastopol.  Russia probably could have held out another round or two if they had retreated more forces to Moscow but only being 4 spaces away from Berlin is rough!

    • RE: Need input on how cp can win, or is it just sheer luck if they do?

      I actually just experienced a CP win.  Germany’s navy was key in this game.  They attacked and eliminated the UK fleet on G1 and bought at least one sea unit almost every turn.  They sent just enough forces west to contend with France and went after Russia hard with lots of art and fighters.  By the time the UK rebuilt their navy and US could land troops in Europe, Moscow had fallen and Germany was building a battleship and transport each turn.  This made the UK player turtle up and they couldn’t land troops to aid France after Germany took out there replacement navy.

      Austria Hungary focused on Italy while sending a few troops to help in Russia.  They took Rome on round 8 and turned their focus to France and picking off some of the northern Africa territories.

      The Ottomans had a tough time with India and Egypt.  It wasn’t until Germany sent their forces that took Moscow south to help them could they even maintain control of their original territories.

      Other than the purchase of one fighter, Russia only bought inf and art.  It just couldn’t compete with the German art rolling at 4’s.  Moscow fell on round 5.

      The UK went after the Ottomans and had them down to 11IPC’s at one point.  They were able to rebuild a navy and land 6 units in Europe a turn but after Moscow fell, Germany could afford to put a stop to that.

      The US probably could have done more but they were able to establish a transport bridge to land 4-6 units in southern Europe each turn.  This was the main reason that Italy survived as long as it did.  Once Rome fell Austria Hungary started to build a navy and force US out of the Med.

      Not soon after Paris fell and that was that.

    • RE: Axis and Allies 1914 FAQ/Question and Answer Thread

      Wanted some clarification on the mine rules…

      If Germany already has ships (including transports) in SZ9 at the beginning of their turn and London is controlled by UK, in which of these two scenarios, if any, will mines be rolled?

      1. German transports stay in SZ9, load units from Belgium and land them in London.

      2. German transports move to SZ10 to load units and return to SZ9 to land units.

      From what I get from the rule book, scenario 1 has no mine rolls and scenario 2 has rolls just for the transports that moved.  Correct?

    • RE: Germany's Blockade of Britain

      After one and a half games, I’m convinced that Germany must attack the UK fleet on G1.  At the very least the ships in SZ9 have to be eliminated.

      In our first game the German player decided not to attack the UK fleet and slowly build up their navy.  After the first round the UK had a virtually unbeatable navy and was able to land units in France for the entire game that eventually ended in an Allied victory.

      In our second game Germany attacked the entire UK Atlantic fleet and won both battles with average rolls.  They suffered one mine hit in SZ9 and had 1 damaged battleship left after the battle ended.  The battle in SZ2 ended up with 1 sub surviving.  On top of this, Germany bought a cruiser and sub on both G1 and G2 and attacked any ships that the UK bought.  This forced UK to spend more money on their navy and as a result weakened India a good bit.  Although these buys slowed Germany’s advance into France, it also kept UK from landing units for 3 turns.

      This game is still in progress and there is not an obvious victor yet, but Germany’s overall position is much more secure than our first game.

    • RE: Germany's Blockade of Britain

      It seems very possible that Germany could destroy the entire Atlantic UK fleet on G1.  SZ 2:2 Subs vs 1 Cruiser SZ9:1 Battleship, 2 Cruisers, 2 Subs vs 1 Battleship, 2 Cruisers, and 5 mine rolls.

      Risky but the reward makes it very temping.
