RE: Of bids and battleships…
I have seen lots of people who would take a bb into a zone alone against a single ship, like a sub or trans, knowing that even if they take the hit, they will be ok and they are almost assured the kill in the first round. I imagine this might not happen much in your professional ranks, but I’ve never played online or pbem, just with locals.

Enhanced Realism Rules
Anyone tried out these rules? Sounds pretty interesting. They address what I have always seen as the biggest flaw (well…not a flaw, but whatever) in A&A and that is that the player that has taken hits gets to choose the units to sacrifice (in most cases). In real combat, of course, that’s not the case. This modification to the standard rules addresses that issue in an interesting manner as well as other things, such as Artillery with AA guns and their role in amphibious battles etc. It also, among many other things, adds the capability for defenders to retreat. Why not?
If anyone has had any experience with this, let me know what you thought of it. As it is, I am still reading around to learn how to do a PBEM game. So, once I have done a few games by forum here, then I am going to maybe try out this mod.

Of bids and battleships…
I just wanted to make the post title sound like a Steinbeck novel…or a Samuel Taylor Colerige writing.
Anyways, two questions.
1: I don’t really understand all this nonsense of bids. Is there some commonly known advantage that the Allies have over the Axis and so the Allied players must forfeit some cash to the guy who gets stuck with Axis?? I guess if you want to go by history…
2: What do you folks say on the topic of 2-hit battleships? Personally, I think it’s a bunch of tomfoolery, but it seems to be pretty common. I love my Battleships and such, but I think that the 2-hit rule allows the player to do somewhat kamikaze plays with their Battleship without worrying as much about protecting it. I personally never leave mine alone without a submarine or two to defend it from sneaky buggers.
So, there’s a couple of things to keep you busy for a few. ;-)
Thanks again.

RE: Play by Forum questions
That’s intriguing. I know very little C/C++ programming, unfortunately, but I feel that such a project should be web-based anyways. The demands are not so great that they make a web application unsuitable speed-wise, and the limitations on platform compatibility really suck for application programming. I primarily work (and play) in linux. I have windows installed for the occasional Ravenshield game, but that is it. As a result, the mapview program isn’t much use to me, but I don’t mind having the board set up. In fact, I probably prefer it. In chess I always did better on a board because I could look over everything at once and plan simultaneously. In something like mapview or even in the PC CDROM version of A&A, there is too much moving around to see everything that you have to plan in geographical phases…I dunno. It’s not a really big deal either way.
Coincidentally I just landed a contract job to develop a web application for a company near me that requires a pretty large code base of user-related stuff, like accounts and cross linking accounts in a client/contractor relationship. I am well acquainted with the folks and am free to use the objective code that I write that is not central to the project. So, I can use a lot of the database access / user account related code towards this project once I am done the work project.
I am pretty excited about taking a stab at this.
Thanks again for your help and advice.

RE: Play by Forum questions
That helps a lot. This mapview software is handy. I was just going to use a set up boardgame, and probably still will. That dicey thing, however, looks a little….‘dicey’. I would have thought someone would have made an application for that purpose. Anyways, the system it uses is pretty strange, to me anyways. I am a web developer by profession, and I think I might go over all the features that would be required for such a system and consider making a similar web application for public use that would, hopefully be easier to use and more plentiful.
The first thing that made me cry was “Guess a game number until you find one that isn’t used…” Oh lord.

RE: Play by Forum questions
Another thing….
Is there a list of abbreviations that are used? I see lots of stuff like OOL and wol and such that I don’t understand. A comprehensive list would be great.

Play by Forum questions
A couple quick questions…
I am interested in starting a Play by Forum game on here with someone. I have a couple weeks of nothing to do, so it sounds like a cool way to spend some time.
First question: What does MAPVIEW mean? I read it in one of the game logs on here and don’t know what that means…
Second question: how do you deal with combat??? Like, dice rolls etc.
Thanks…
I already have a board setup to play, so once I figure these things out, if someone wants to play, let me know in this thread.

RE: Help with CD Rom game…
Yes, I tried setting the volume to the lowest setting, but that did not solve the devilry. I have, however, noticed that the games runs at acceptable speeds in single player mode. It’s only in multiplayer that it takes a big shit. Whether I host or just join does not affect that. It is bogged down regardless.

Help with CD Rom game…
I have been playing the board game of A&A for about six years, and love the game thoroughly. I picked up the CDROM version at Walmart for a few bucks about a year ago. The game, when patched, seems to work quite well, but I HATE playing it beacuse of the cd requirement. The CD spinning in the drive makes a heap of noise and slows everything down, and the sound, though you can turn it to 0 vol, cannot be disabled, so you have to wait for audio loading and such. I have looked around for a NOCD crack of some sort, something to kill the audio and video and free me from having to switch discs all the time, but I couldn’t find a single one that worked. I must have found upwards of 20 sites offering a few different cracks that claim to be for A&A but every one of them is actually made for blitz.
That’s a whole nother story. I downloaded blitz off the website for free, the one that was linked on this forum on another post (its a legal free offerring from the developers) but it runs pretty assy. I use windows XP and unless I run it in win98 compatibility mode, it runs unusably slow. However, even when I set 98 compatibility, after playing in the game a minute or two, it slows down to unusable speeds as well.
If anyone knows a fix for that problem, then I won’t have to keep looking for a crack for the original game, but this really sucks how all the digital versions of the glorious game are total crap.
Thanks for any help that can be offered.
