    • RE: What happened to the US?

      @Koningstiger:

      In each and every documentary, book I’ve ever seen or read on the subject of WW II, I understood that the US (war) economy was huge!! In some cases it produced more of a certain weapon type than all other belligerents combined, I seem to recall. Then what’s the deal with this version of A&A? After Japan just eats up China, takes a couple of Russian territories and will probably eventually take India as well thereby opening up the way to even more IPCs in Africa it far outproduces the US. The same goes for Germany. In global at least the US gets a 30 (?) IPC bonus once at war! Many times Japan’s navy will simply be able to keep up with the US one

      You should try the old school Axis & Allies Pacific- US starts with 80 economy!!

    • RE: How to counter Japanese Subs?

      I don’t think I WOULD counter… I don’t think you’re going to get very far without building any Inf. You’ll probably run outta steam around J3-4 (and by then, I will have refocussed my efforts on Germany.)

      Thanks for this, I’ve been kicking US Pacific ideas around in my head for a while, but nothing was sticking. I particularly like your UK invasion of Solomons/stationing US air units there.

      Cheers!

      Your impeccable logic leaves no room for doubt. And all this time I’ve chalked it up to unbalanced gameplay!

      I wonder if Alternate-Me is out there somewhere, speaking German?

      @Cromwell_Dude:

      Ok, I had some free time. Thought about your post today. And, your post was exactly what I needed at this moment. I needed some thing / some one to just push me over the edge and play the new 1942. I would sound like a complete idiot to say any more without playing the game. I’m going to see if I can get a game going Labor Day weekend.

      Awesome! Let us know how it goes.

      Addendum: @MistuhJay-I just came on to say thank you because I couldn’t sleep. Just saw your post to me. I’ve got to get up in 6 hours. I will write you a sincere email tomorrow hopefully where I put my heart into it and not just respond to respond.

      Much appreciated!

      @Cromwell_Dude:

      1942.2 map just quickens the Allied victory, in my opinion.

      I feel like the sitrep in the Atlantic slows me down as Allies… could you be more specific about how it quickens the Allied victory (if for no reason but to improve my game?)  =)

    • RE: Map and Strategy Differences between 1st and 2nd Editions

      @Hobbes:

      I actually wondered about if the Axis player was going to try that on my 2nd game. He had bought a carrier and an IC on round 1, then joined both fleets together off France and ended up with 6 transports plus 2 carriers but he never got enough to try Sea Lion. However, if the Germans landed in Canada, then it would be 12 US units against 16 German ones, so I had to keep units in range while playing KJF.

      Germany dropping 16 units in E. Canada? Never thought of that… what if Japan did the same thing to Alaska J3. America has to decide to defend E. US or W. US (and will obviously protect its capital, allowing Japan to assault W. US). It can’t be this easy… can it?

      Please show this beginner why this is a bad idea?  =)

      Anybody else find it ironic that the longest thread on the 1942.2 board is about a different edition of AA?  :?

      Lol! Maybe we should establish an annual moment of silence for all the obsolete versions of AA we’ve accumulated over the years?

      It’s like asking Steven Hawking to Play Einstien Tic-Tac-Toe.  OF course they’re going to find out the Game’s broken.

      Heh, like the scene from Wargames where the computer plays tic-tac-toe against itself, thus averting nuclear war! :-D

      Just throwin this out there… Hawaii starting with a value of 3/4 and an IC? Now THAT’S what I’d call a Victory City!

    • RE: Russia attack west russia with everything that can reach on the first turn.

      @UrJohn:

      It depends on your strategy.
      Here are some options–
      –3 AP & 3 INF
      –IC, AP & 2 ART
      –AP, INF, DD & BMR
      –2 AP, SS, 2 INF & ART
      –CV, AP & 3 INF

      I really like options 1 and 2 (J1 bomber, ftw!), but why would you need a third CV when you start with two already?

      I’m not knockin it-just genuinely want to understand the logic.  =)

      @Cow:

      eww vc win for 1942. not a real win unless you take russia imo. :)

      True, that. Â

      It definitely feels like the Allies have to work a lot harder to get their 9 VCs.  The Axis VCs (except maybe Phillipines) all seem a lot more easily defensible than Karelia (touching two German territories and a German Trn), India (within striking distance of the combined might of the Japanese fleet by J2-3), and Hawaii (a constant draw on US forces to defend).  In fact, Hawaii as a VC seems like it does more to hold US back then it does to help.

      @UrJohn:

      @MistuhJay:

      Because if Japan had actually landed on Oahu, the Allies would have TOTALLY lost the war.  =)

      Obviously not. The VCs are on the map to try to make the players care about the areas that were strategically/politically important to the powers at war. A standard VC victory for the Axis is a way of rewarding the player for doing much better than the Axis did in the real war, not necessarily a way of saying that a total victory would be guaranteed. Honolulu is a VC in an attempt to make the US player care enough about the Pacific theater keep the US Pacific fleet there even if he goes KGF.

      Don’t get me wrong; I get that it works for gameplay purposes.  However, it just seems silly that the Allies can lose due to Hawaii falling vs. some place vastly more important (Moscow, etc.).  I think Hobbes recently posted how a game he played ended round 4 as Japan landed (and kept) Honolulu.

      @Hobbes:

      Yes. Honolulu changes a LOT of things. Axis merely needs to focus on taking India, Karelia and Hawaii. This pretty much either forces the US to fight on the Pacific or risk losing the game.

      Because if Japan had actually landed on Oahu, the Allies would have TOTALLY lost the war.  =)
