This sounds like a good idea. I play with a lot of new players, many of whom are confused by the “units can move 2 spaces, except when they can’t (except for fighters).”
They’ve always had an easier time with 42.2’s NCM.

I still think the best way to get the brits into their most cautious mode, is GE buying nothing GE1. If the Uk gets agressive, GE2 can produce a deadly force for SL GE3. Even Barbarossa is still a very good option.
But what’s stopping UK from doing the same thing? Buy nothing, run Taranto, and wait til UK2 to respond to a Sealion threat. Seems like a lot of German initiative is being sacrificed with little payoff.
Would love some NOs.
Would like to see Axis navy encouraged.
Tech? Maybe if they did it a la 50th Anniversary?
Much improved USW. I mean, Global did it perfectly. And it was SUCH a big deal for Germany in WW1.
Impassable Switzerland.
Bigger Western front. And fix the map so that the seam of the boards runs through the Med, and not Europe. Seriously, what the heck?
We’ve had a lot of success with 4 players;
~Germany
~Austria/Turkey
~Britain/US (UK is huge, so the player doesn’t mind waiting through the US turns)
~Russia/France/Italy
We might also swap US for Italy in this setup.
And I agree, France IS boring, with only 1 real option. Stack the Western front and wait to get bailed out.
Anyway, yes, I am actually losing interest in G40 now. A little too big. It’s too busy. Sweet spot is somewhere between AA50 and G40.
Bigger isn’t always better.
Hear, hear. I have yet to enjoy a f2f game of G40. China and ANZAC are the bane of my existence as I wait for my turn to come around again. Playing 10 hours to get through 6 rounds is disappointing.
Now a game whose complexity falls between AA50 and G40? THERE’s something I could get behind.
And thus begins another thread on the inefficiency of battleships.
I.e., “If 250 destroyers fought your 100 battleships, the destroyers win X% of the time,” etc. etc.
:evil:
@Uncrustable:
USA lost the 1 move Canada chuck
Now it both costs more and takes longer for the USA to make a real impact
This cannot be understated. It REALLY slows down the America. I didn’t used to mind US making about the same as Germany, but now it is hard for them to have an impact. Add to this the fact that Germany can sink the US Atlantic fleet on turn 1, and America just got a lot harder to be effective.
:(
@Imperious:
Are they renting rooms in Caucasus? Is the line too long to find a room?
I see what you did there. :-D
Are you still going to get more combat dice? Just curious. :-)
I was just looking at this topic to ask the same question. I’ve got German and French dice, and would love to fill out my collection.
As this is a valuable resource for new Global players (myself included), is there any chance we could get this stickied? And perhaps the Japanese playbook as well? I find myself hunting for it rather often.
The game already (slightly) favors the Axis, and you wanna nerf US…?
:?
The one Kill France first game I saw, UK pretty much helped France survive until the Americans arrived. Meanwhile, Russia became a beast while Austria got bogged down trying to destroy Italy. Eventually, we called the game after it became apparent Germany wasn’t making any headway on Paris.
I think standard play is smashing Russia first, then working on Paris after that. What is your overall strategy as the Axis?
Welcome, serrada! Any plane may leave a contested area during the move phase, and then participate in the ensuing battle during the Combat phase. However, planes cannot move after the Combat phase.
Don’t play it too often, but I have taught 5 or 6 new players with it. 3 of them graduated to '42 2nd edition after a game or two; this game is excellent in bringing down the AA learning curve. If someone can play 41, he can play just about anything.
Except maybe Global. =)
@wittmann:
You are right. In so many games they are soon overtaken economically by both Germany and Japan, which is silly.
Particularly in 1914. An income of 20? For most of the game?
Something I love about this game is the representation of the American economy. The rest of the AA variants (old Pac excluded), US makes a bit more than Germany! Global finally reflects the impact we had on the war.
Interesting. I’ll have to give this a shot next time we play. I don’t see the Haw or E. Aus making a huge impact, but the other 4 could conceivably help the defense of Moscow. Or India, even.
@Uncrustable:
Germany goal #1 kill UK navy ASAP, and take France of course
goal#2 decide one of 3 basic strategies.
a) Sealion,
b) Barbarossa,
c) dow strict nuetrals while hitting the Med and Africa/Middle East
Wait-attacking strict neutrals as Germany is a viable strategy?! I’m very interested in this; can you elaborate?
