    • RE: Revised - KJF ARTICLES SERIES. NUMBER 1: Pacific fleet

Where I play it is KGF so the KJF is not really expected.  The big deal with the carrier + fig is you drop 6 units.  On round 2 if the Jpan navy is not united in sz 60 I love to push wake.  On the turn that I do push it I just buy all figs (to counter as already suggested).  The reason I push wake is to force Japan to defend Japan from there you can move to a bunch of cool places =D

I do not think so.  I like to buy a bomber and 6 inf and hustle Italy to East poland for a r4 strike at Russia.  I have noticed that as soon as russia goes on the offensive it seems to spell the doom of germany just my .02.

Egypt is a very key battle infact I have seen games won or lost here if the axis win it that has been game if the allies win it that has been game.  At any rate and a germ IC or Italian IC or Japan IC there is pretty evil but then again so it a UK IC.

    • RE: German Industrial Complexes

      @U-505:

I can’t see how the Norway IC is better than the Poland IC.

The Poland IC is automatically defended by infantry from Germany moving toward Russia and, as was said before, is one move closer to Russia.

The Norway IC is isolated and, considering the typical naval buildup by the UK, it must be defended by a significant number of units that are in no way a threat to anyone unless Russia or UK aren’t trading Finland and there are armor in Norway.

For the Axis, you want to be able to pile up your builds, not choose to isolate them. The Egypt IC is an exception because it can be supported by the Italians, which is why I have decided that it is best for the UK to counterattack Egypt if there is one German armor left and even sometimes when there are 2 armor. Lose the UK bomber to make sure you take it, too. Italy can retake Egypt and build an IC if it wants, just as long as Germany can’t. That move carries other benefits but that is for another thread.

The big problem with the poland IC is that it splits the defense of germany.  Now Germany has to defend both poland and Germany.  Any player would defend germany and that makes a huge gap in the supply lines to the Russian front.  By turn 2 the Germans are out numbered or at best on par with the soviets.  In games where I have used the poland IC Uk drops on Poland and blam not only did you lose an IC but the whole logistics of the russain front goes out the window.  I do like norway and will give that a try.  I have used Bulgaria.  The argument for Norway is sound.

If you KNOW 100% that they will attempt a sealion the best thing to do to hold it is to buy 2 planes 3 inf for UK and fly over the Russian Fighters and if you have the sz1 transport bring the armor as well.  And you can land the US force there as well with 1 fig 1 bomber 2 inf 1 art 1 armor.  Makes for a tuff time of taking it.

    • RE: Reality Check

Use the Italians to get up close to russia.  Make russia defend on 2 points.  Do your best to not lose German armor.  It puts tremendous pressure on russia.  I have been buying bombers as well seems to help me.  Russia will have more units than germany.  Also with Japan it is very important to sweep china out r1 and send as many as those fighters to get in range of hitting a weak spot in the russian lines as well.  If you get the chance just like in revised try to merge the fleets.  Anymore I like to skip the philippines  I know it sounds like crazy talk but come round three you should be sitting in chinghai with about 6-12 units that russia wont be able to deal with very well if you have the italians up on the front lines.  Just be careful.  I am in PA as well near Harrisburg =D.  I hope this helps a bit.  As an allied counter to this I have found that bombing italy with UK is quite the nag lol. Oh and with Germany buy some bombers they are pretty helpful as well try to make 1 per turn because with anywhere from 10-15 tanks and r3-5 you at some point should be able to take one weak point and bum rush russia with a lot of hardware.  I hope that kinda helps.  Also if you are playing a tech game it is very very very important to tech with both germany and japan r1.  The progression that I use is that I buy 1 token with germany r1 and then 2-3 on r2.  Hopefully germany gets something neat I hope to get mecha inf with japan LRA or Naval Yards or Jet power works for me.  Things however do not always go that good.

    • RE: Axis can't win? IMO Allies can't win.

AA 50 is a fail imho revised is a better system for serious game play(most people agree that you place a bid to fix most problems and turn off tech).  I think that is possible that some one will be able to find a break through some where some day but this game system seems to be failing pretty good.  Most players seem to want to play with no NO’s.  NO’s were a huge part of the game system of AA 50 and now they have to be taken off to have fun game?  As whole AA 50 needs to go back to drawing table I think.  It really does not matter if you think the allies win too much or axis win too much.  To much game system has to be altered has to go on for AA 50 and in the end is it still AA 50 or something else that we play?  It is something else imho.
*See the above post as well.  Everything is withing the axis’s reach very quickly and the allies for the most part cannot en devour to save it.  The main problem being the Pacific it is an epic fail.  For all the work they did with Germany and Italy it is a real shame to have a game ruined by something that was not play tested well the whole map needs changed to work.  I am not sure a bid can really save the game either.  Just coming from a prospective that there are 5 victory cities in or close to Japan.  There is 18 production for UK in the Pac counting India well I do not think I have to get into that I think by now people should be getting the point.

    • RE: How is tech countered?

Where I play normal bid is between 7-12 in revised I like the tech option but some like to gamble on operation sea lion Germany 1 when it happens I give up sometimes and sometimes I play on (USA takes it back most times).  Plus I cannot seem to win with Germany with a bid below 12.  The  I will file that away for next time.  I could not keep up in game in above game some how Japan locked me out of ever building a navy in the West.  It was very strange.

Is that a standard Uk open as well?  Lately I have been going pacific as well it seems to work well.  USA 1 I buy 4 or 6 subs.  If 4 subs then a carrier.  Any suggestions for USA fleet make up?  I am trying to figure out an optimal build I think going subs and air looks good but I think you at least 2 carriers.  Any suggestions would help.

    • RE: Russian Strategy

      @Imperious:

If the Soviets build ANY naval while the Germans continue to hold Soviet territory, then the Soviets will surely lose. They need tanks and planes and not transports or destroyers.

They used to have a guy back in 98 ( on MSN game zone) who always bought a Battleship for 24 IPC on turn one and went on to win some victories, but i think he was fluffing up his results so he can tell his grandson how he won games with Soviet Battleships.

Buying naval for the Soviets is like claiming you found the lock ness monster

One transport in SZ16 can help you hit your NO if you play them.  With right circumstances……

    • How is tech countered?

This is just a basic question about how to counter a japan round one tech of naval yards when you are attempting to contain japan?  How do you as USA attempt to counter it?  Is there a viable way or is it like revised when Germany gets LRA and bids a transport?  Is it pretty much good game and on the next?

    • RE: 3 months of waiting!

      @ithkrall:

After 3 months of waiting, my copy of AA50 has finally arrived

Long shipping from the US, to Australia and then to New Zealand, the game was then held in customs on a routine “hold and search” for over 2 weeks.

I picked up my copy at 4pm, but had an evening planned out with my partner  dinner and a movie, so i had to lug the game around with me (luckily shes a gamer as well, and knew I had been waiting for months so wasn’t bothered)

5 hours later I got home and finally got to open the game!

My plan is to paint the entire set over the next few months. I’ll set up a thread later and post links to photobucket to show my progress. Now that the game has arrived, i’m already getting ready to pimp it up.

Now to entrap my group of players!

Excellent!!!  Here is a suggestion on how to win them over so to speak.  Make them touch the pieces and ask them to read you something out of the rule book that you think they would have some type of interest in.

    • RE: What to do for J1 when UK puts much pressure on you?

      @bb82:

I’ve posted something similar to this @ GTO, but I havn’t really found an answer, so I ask you the same question:

4 situations: These are some of the worst starting positions that J1 can be in.

      1:

      6 Russians @ Bury
      UK bomber @ Nov
UK destroyer and carrier killes Japan tranny
UK uses one tranny load each, to take New Guinea and Borneo
UK sub survives, Japan sub dead.
UK puts fighter with Pearl fleet.

      2:

Same as 1 except only destroyer kills tranny and the UK fighter is in borneo waters with carrier, instead of being @ Pearl.

      3:

Similar to 1 & 2, except UK builds an IC @ India.

      4:

Similar to others, except Egypt fighter survives and joins the UK carrier.

What does does Japan do on J1 if in these situations? Build and moves?

      My quick answer:
I like the idea of usually going with 3 trannies on J1, but I dont see how it can do that and fight all the necessary battles without leaving its trannies in harms way. So the best that I can think is to either go with 2 IC’s or go with 1 IC, a fighter, and save 5. Then do all the normal battles.

      Your solution?

      1.  The bury stack has to die as well as china.
      2.  You can kill the Carrier and Destroyer with 2 Battleships move the Battleship from East Indies and the Battleship from Japan.  The same if the Carrier and fighter and destroyer in in Borneo waters.
      3.  For whatever the reason in revised what ever the unit is that comes to kill the transport in Kwang.  sea zone is it dies a long with the transport for whatever reason.
      4.  The Borneo “surprise” and New G attack are 50/50 odds.  Chances are one of those attacks will fail.  In which case on your next round you can en devour to take one back.
      5.  Without the sub its kinda hard to do Pearl Harbor light but not Impossible.  Take your Destroyer, Bomber, and 1 Fighter over.  When the UK puts its Fighter on the US carrier in SZ 52 you can take 1 other fighter from the other carrier in SZ 37 over to fight there as well just move up the SZ 50 or to SZ 45.  You then can also take the other fighter from sz 37 to clear the sz 47 transport.
      6.  Also with your buy you can just place the 3 transport you bought in SZ 61 without any fear of them being bombed by the novo bomber.

      I hope that helps!

    • RE: Japans Set Up in 41

      @Cmdr:

I don’t know DM.  Everytime I see America go full bore after Germany I see Washington DC in Japanese hands before the war is over.

Perhaps more people are not practiced in how to convert Japan from a Russian killing machine to an American killing machine?  Honestly, I am the only person I know of that literally had different strategies on how to take out America with Japan in Revised (yea, that would be MORE THAN ONE STRATEGY) that I practiced and actually got to work in Tournaments and League games.  Therefore, maybe I am more open to strategies to take out North America and able to see how some of them might work than other people do.

One thing that you must know, however, is that without attacking Japan, the allies are going to be really hard pressed to keep their income streams going.

      1)  England only has the French NO it can possibly have.

      2)  America only has the French NO and maybe the North American NO if they can manage to get both territories.

Otherwise, America and England are without national objective income.  That’s huge. (UK could have +15 IPC and America could have +20 IPC if America goes after Japan.)

So if you don’t go after Japan, you could be talking a -35 IPC ding to the Allied incomes.  Maybe not so bad for one round, but that’s not going to be cuddly and cute after 5 or 6 rounds!

Also, America is going to have to focus on building up troops in North America if Japan switches over.  Even if Japan does not win, that alone effectively takes America out of the game.

First, you don’t have the navy now to secure yourself from invasion.

Second, you have to build units for back home.

Third, you will lose units liberating your home

Fourth, whatever is left can go to Europe, but that’s not going to be a lot with only 38-43 IPC income!

However, if America goes hot and heavy in the Pacific, they can get +1 British NO just for Carolines if they wanted, they can liberate English islands, they can dump units from Alaska into Buryatia to heckle and liberate china, etc, etc, etc.

Remember, Japan’s a wuss when the game opens.  Yes, they start with 9 Fighters and 3 Carriers.  So what?  That gets bled off fast if Japan has to go after India AND hold off the American fleet AND take out China AND worry about rogue Russians.

Before I go off the deep end here buying only sub’s with the US for two rounds of play what the standard Pac. strat?

I think Ms. Jenn does have a point here.  I do see a huge vulnerability to the Japanese Navy namely the Submarine.  After most Japan opens the one and only Japanese destroyer is sitting in Hawaii without any support.  USA also controls wake island.  I’ll will see what I can do.

Here is list of G1 Opening Moves (This is just my flavor there are others out there)

      SZ 5 1 Sub to SZ 6

      Germany to SZ 12 Bomber

      SZ 7 to SZ 12 Subs x 2

      Germany to SZ 5 Art

      Norways to SZ 5 Inf

SZ 5 INF and ART to Karelia

Finland to Karelia Inf x 2

Poland to Baltic States Inf x 4 Art 1

      Poland to Karelia 1 Fig

      Norway to Karelia 1 Fig

      Germany to Karelia 1 Fig

Northwestern Europe to Karelia 1 Fig

Czechoslovakia Hungary to Blatic States Armor x 2

Bulgaria Romania to East Poland Inf x 2

Bulgaria Romania to East Poland Art 1

Bulgaria to East Poland Arm 1

Bulgaria Romania to Ukraine Inf 1

Bulgaria Romania to Ukraine Arm 1

      Morocco Algeria to SZ 13

      SZ 13 to SZ 14 Inf 1

Libya to SZ 14 Arm 1

      SZ 14 to SZ 16 Transport 1

SZ 16 to Ukraine 1 Arm 1 Inf

The 2 Armor left in Poland can be used in attacks Along the Front I leave them in case something goes wrong to reinforce karelia after I take it or Northwestern Europe or France.  Any planes that make it from Kare land in Northwestern Europe.  At this point the Inf left in Germ can move to either front.  It is pretty flexible.  The SZ 16 transport will most likely die.  I like to buy 1 Bomber and 6 Inf for Germ R1.  Most of the time the Soviet Union responds by buying 6 armor as well and the UK player will most likely to land in France.  This is a pretty generic if you ask me it is what I do.  There are weakness’s in this as it is a high risk open I feel but one that wins on G1.  Please test it before one makes a comment.  And that is all I got for now.
