RE: WWII Myths
I like the polish cavalry one because its always brought up in documentaries. While Poland still used cavalry it was not in an offensive role and served more for recon since the polish army did not posses any scout cars like other nations. there was one time when a Calvary unit attacked a small German infantry unit but were counter attacked by a group of panzer ii’s but it was not a cavalry charge against entrenched or armored units.

RE: What country had the best trained infantry in WWII?
I would give it to the Germans for most of the war up until the final year or two but even then they always seemed to give the Allies a few surprises. The only other Nation that could compete would be the British commonwealth (all countries fighting as members of the commonwealth since there were so many and on so many fronts) because they had at least a very professional army in the pre war years where as countries like USA, had a very small standing army. However we are talking about man to man and this would have to go to the Germans because they were physically fit like athletes, very dedicated to their commanders and leaders, and they had very good understanding on how to use their equipment. However as the war progressed the crack troops Germany started the war with became less and less do to losses on all fronts. To sum it all up Germany had the best soldiers through most of the war right up untill the end where as the allies would spend the war trying to catch up and would often get caught by the German tactics examples being the battle of the buldge, the battle of Normandy, the Battles of Sicily and Italy.

RE: First time playing Germany
The way I view Germany and Italy is like this. Germany is your big powerhouse, you want Germany to making as much income as possible from territory and bonuses because they will need to make big investments in air and armor as well as troops when you invade Russia, also I find that if you can get a German naval and ground force operating alongside Italy you can guarantee victory in Africa and the middle east since it requires big investments from USA and Britain to knock out. Italy has 3 priorities, getting control of the med, Getting control of Egypt (also want Germans in there so they can get a bonus) and either take the middle east or take south Africa. Some players like to use Italy in Russia as well but I find this just weakens Italy’s efforts in Africa.

RE: Questions on Axis Strategy
Im not the best Axis player but this is usally how I play and I have won a few games with this strategy.
Barbarossa I usually wait till round 3 Unless the Italians have a really good first 2 rounds in the Med in which case ill put more ground units into the turn 2 buy and send them east.
Moving starting units, first make sure you take Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Greece as Germany. Germany will be your big spender for the Axis so they need more territory this allows them to build the Atlantic wall, support in the Med (if needed) and focus the majority of its efforts on Russia. as for movement after taking France I send everything from mech to tank east, troops are for occupation, sometimes I prep a mech force to go to Africa from southern France but other then that just use infantry and AAA to occupy western Europe untill the Allies are in a really good position to invade.
As for taking Moscow the best rout I have found is going North taking novograd for the factory then going hard for Moscow, how ever do not abandon a force in the Ukraine otherwise you can run into big problems, if you can get the factory in the Ukraine you will be in a good position.
J1 attack is very hard to do because you dont have the troop ships to hit the big targets or “chedder” as i call it ( the duth east indies, borneo, Java, Sumatra) however an early attack will usally suck up british troops heading to the middle east and could give Italy a naval advantage in the med.
Italy needs to get control of the med as soon as possible, this can be done if you play your fleet close to your air assets and constantly land fresh troops in Africa to capture Egypt, replacing ships in early game is hard for Italy since they dont make much so you have to be careful not to leave your ships open to large attack from the British air and Navy, I find subs and troop ships are good buys to help this.
Bulgaria should go to Germany
If you decide to go after Stalingrad you should build up the finish force to eventually take Leningrad I have never been able to take Stalingrad without holding Leningrad because the Russians can build a big force really fast if you dont do spoiling attacks and take away territory
Japans best move is to take Malaya then build up a naval force as well as a ground force in Shan state before the Brits are able to really get dug in, example I wasnt able to get a big enough Japanese force to take India so within 3 turns the brits were able to outnumber me 3 to 1
Sea lion is a good way to get the British to put money and effort into defending England, if you but 4 troop ships on round 1 and the Brits put more of their force into Africa and don’t build a ground force then i say go for it. if the brits dig in on England then don’t bother, build a u boat fleet to harass the brits.
Buy your units but position them in such a way as Russia dosnt know what your target is, Ill take poland, besserabia, and baltics in round 1 then go for Ukraine to draw forces south then go hard center for Moscow.
G1 is based on taking all French territory and hurting the british fleet so everything you have west plus your air should be put into the attack, priority on France and Normandy to prevent a counter attack.

RE: Air raids
Im thinking more for the Allies, the only good bombing for Germany would be to hit the factory in the Ukraine or Novograd since it would make it easyier to capture those positions. The Allies however can do more damage by hitting the french factories as well as the factory in Western Germany because it forces the Germans to spend IPC on repairs instead of equipment and troops which can really hurt their war effort.

RE: Russian eastern infantry
I always play depending on what the Japanese do, are they putting large numbers of units in Manchuria and Korea?, are they about to knock China out and have a big force on the Russian border? If Japan makes these moves I say build up using mech from Moscow and maybe a couple of tanks (if you can spare them) and either attack if you think it will give the Allies a big advantage and hurt japan bad or just dig in and wait for the attack. If Japan does not put any big numbers facing Russia then I like to send units west gradully. yes it takes time but I have had games where I was able to save Moscow using those troops so it can work out much like it did historically.

RE: Air raids
So to make it worth it and be safer doing an air raid with at least 2 bombers would be good that way if the AA or interceptors do get a hit it wont hurt to bad and ill still be able to hit my target. Maes sense ill have to try on our next game

RE: Do you take Southern France as Germany or Italy?
I say Germany always because Germany is your powerhouse as far as income, and the more income you can bring in for Germany the better chance you have of taking Russia since you can spend more, while I do like to bring an Italian Force into Russia this force is there to support the German force, take the first hits in counter attacks and keep my German units around much longer, Southern France also allows the Germans to build their own fleet to transport units to africa which can give you a big boost and can usually bring an Axis victory in the Med.

Air raids
when I first played Axis and Allies 1996 with my dad as a child one of the main strategies used for the Allies and the Germans was air raids which a bomber would hit the capital city and if it wasnt hit by AA it would be able to take out 1 to 6 IPCs from the player more if you bring more than 1 bomber. The next axis and allies version we played and continue to play is 1940 global and with the newer rules of AAA and fighters being able to intercept and now that instead of directly losing IPC from a raid the player hit has to spend IPC to repair facilitates hit by the raid, This would be find infact I like it being able to hit shipyards or Airfields to eliminate their bonus but the fact the fighters can intercept now and the Added AAA has kind of prevented these raids from occurring because their is just too much risk for little reward since escort fighters are usually out of range (for Allies anyway) and the Anti- air is too strong in certain areas (England). Does anybody now of a way to fix this to make Air raids possible?

RE: Are Allies doomed from the outset on G40 map?
What I have found is that Yes the Axis powers start off with a huge advantage over the Allies on all fronts and it is very difficult for the Allies to match the Axis powers let alone surpass them in materials and income (US exception because they are the most powerful nation in the games soon as they enter the war) the best way to play the Allies I find is a mix of spoiling attacks wherever possible (attacks where you either knock the Axis player down to 1 unit in the territory then retreat while your force still holds a strong presence or take a territory like Norway in a raid which requires the axis player to react a d counter attack taking units away from their main effort) and providing reinforcements to Russia and in the pacific, to the island of the East indies (the gold mine as I call it for Japan). It is costly and takes a few turns to really show its teeth but eventually you will find the Axis lacking in Infantry on all fronts, mean while powers like US and Russia can build up massive counter attack forces and when they go on the offensive effectively mark the end of Axis superiority and put the initiative in Allied hands, but as many of you have pointed out its a long road for the Allies and a costly one at that.
