    • RE: Barring favorable rolls how can the axis win?

The second transport is definitely risky and there have been games where I’ve lost it before I get to use it so be warned
But I try to take out the sub with a plane, but if you miss it can retreat and you’re in trouble but I’ll usually take that chance.
If you do buy the transport the most important thing is to take out the allied Med fleet so I’ll send the sub and BB to take out the UK BB off Gib and sometimes (depends on how I feel) 2ftrs to take out the sub. Then the bomber to UK trans off Canada, and sub, trans, 3 ftrs to UK sea zone (reinforced by Russian ships) leaving the US trans.
Assuming all goes well in the Med, you can do one of two things and it is really a judgement call: (If the sub survived your screwed)

      1. move your original trans off the coast of Gib with your BB and place the new one in SE, that guarentees you’ll have at least one for rd 2 and you’ll take some UK planes with you via your BB protection if they go after that one with their bomber.
2)leave the trans and place the new one in SE sea zone. Now the only thing that can get to them is the UK bomber (this leaves the BB safe) and if they do go for it their bomber will be a sitting duck (or you might shoot it down) on rd 2 in either Afr or on Gib, plus your BB should still be alive and can be used for a possibel Rd 2 attack on UK with remaining ftrs.

You could also leave the BB, trans where they are and use plane and sub for Gib and planes for sub leaving some allied ships in the Atlantic. But the extra income from Afr should pay for the extra men needed to to defend WE at least in the short term till Japan can get going.

    • RE: Barring favorable rolls how can the axis win?

      Here is one option:

Take out ALL allied ships on G1 and buy a second transport. This allows you to get 4 inf into Africa on G2 plus 2 inf from G1 before the allies can even land in Africa on UK2 or US2. You don’t need to hold all of Africa but you should be able to hold 6-8 IPC of it, making up for the loss of Fin and Ukr. Plus you might be able to pick off Syria and Persia and get a transport to the Red Sea before the allies can sink them both. In this case you probably need to fall back to EE and just hold there until Japan can approach Moscow to relieve pressure on Ger.
Also don’t buy tanks-stick to men and an occasional ftr. Also if you were successful in taking out all allied ships on G1 you might be able to do it again on G2 (bomber from WE to US to take out US transports)-this will cost you all of your ftrs probably, but you will keep the US and UK out of Russia and Africa for another rd, then you only need to match Russia’s Inf on the Eastern front to keep the stalemate.
No matter what Ger does you need Japan to put pressure on Russia and cause the Russians to divert troops. Japan is the key, more often then not they will be the ones who take Moscow not Germany.

    • RE: RR: Does it help the Axis?

If Cauc is lightly defended (1 man), I wouldn’t bring in tanks and with RR, Ger would have an extra ftr somewhere to use. Also when I play the allies one of my first goals is to eliminate the Ger navy at all costs (you can’t have Ger cont to pump troops into Afr) So I wasn’t counting on having a med fleet for that long.
I also don’t like to waste Ger tanks and are very reluctant to move them into battles where I won’t get them back and I usually perfer to take out all allied ships but this is on of my alternative strats where I push hard toward Rus with both Ger and Jap. It forces Russia’s moves, and it is still key to take out US/UK transports on G1 but other ships are ignored if possible. I just find with RR Ger can’t just sit back and defend Ukr and EE without attacking a lightly defended Cauc. b/c on R2-Russia has at the very least 15 inf 3 arm 2 ftr at its disposal and can take Ukr or EE at will in Rd2 and I just think that is too early to be defensive with Ger.
With Cauc in Ger hands Rus must take it back or be forced to defend both Moscow and Kar (hard to do). Also I like to bait Rus into using her tanks to take back Cauc, then I can pick off her offensive power. And if you are able to take (trade) Cauc on G1 and on G2 then by G3 (assuming you buy all inf) you can have 8-10 inf in EE and Ukr then you can take Cauc with a sufficient force to hold. Again, I just think a defensive Ger early on is bad, you can always fall back and defend EE with all you got when things go sour but the amount of troops Russia has on rd2 with Russia restricted just invites an invasion of Ukr or EE with overwhelming numbers and Ger may not be able to take it back.

    • RE: RR: Does it help the Axis?

Also with RR it allows Ger the option of attacking Cauc on G1, instead of retaking Ukr, you can try to make Cauc the “trading territory”, depending on how Cauc is defended of course. If Cauc has 1-4 inf in it, Ger can send in anywhere from 3-5 inf (2 from SE w/amphib assualt) and 1-3 tanks. This forces Russia retake Cauc because she can’t afford to have any of those units swing south. Then Ger could have 4 inf 2 tanks and a plane in EE and Ukr and maybe 1-4 inf and 2-3 tanks in Cauc, and I don’t think Russia can take back 2 territories easily on R2 and this is a much better scenerio than Russia already in Ukr and bottling up Ger. So I think RR does help the axis, maybe not a lot but it is a help.

    • RE: My Musical Rant

The over exposure really irritates me. Why are all the radio stations the same and why do they play the same damn songs over and over every hour? Needless to say I no longer listen to radio. It’s really ashame because as soon as one band comes out with a unique sound and sell, then about a million other bands come out and sound similar and ruin the whole thing.
I really enjoy bands like Pearl Jam, who no longer make videos and limit their public appearences. They’re great in concert too! Unfortunately a lot of their early stuff was over played but their stuff from Vitology on is better anyway, IMHO. No Code rules!

    • RE: What's some of your greatest A&A memories?

My brother and I both learned to play at the same time (close to 12 yrs ago) and in one of our first games I had just won a big battle and was celebrating (taunting) and figured I’d let my brother gather his thoughts so I went to get a coke. Well, on my way back I nailed my toe on the kitchen counter and spilled my coke all over the floor. Luckily my toe wasn’t broken but it was black and blue for a week. I learned a valuable lesson that day, The A&A gods do not like taunting in any way. So be warned…

Hahaha, I like that. Don’t think I’ve ever had one of the initial subs make it back to port though. Well it’s something to shoot for.

    • RE: Medal of Honor winners

I have to second that “ouch”. I’ve had my share of catastophic battles in the Pacific as Japan and I also found that sometimes German troops just arn’t ment to be in Africa. But here is one for the Axis…The almost unsinkable sub…
On G1 I took my sub off the coast of WE and sunk the US transport, then the UK sent its bomber after me and missed, then the US sent a bomber and fighter after me and missed (thinking they’d take me out the US bought 3 transports). So on G2, for the heck of it I sent my sub on a suicide mission to take out as many transports as I could and after about 10 rds of dice rolling or so I sunk all three US transports. The allies now extremely pissed off sent another UK bomber after the sub only to miss, but finally the sub crews luck ran out as 2 US ftrs and 1 bomber sunk her off the shore of E.US. But the damage was done.

    • Medal of Honor winners

I was truely inspired by the tales of “super transports” in one of the other topics and thought we should honor all those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

I had a UK infantry fight off 2 German tanks and 1 Inf in South Africa then proceed to walk his way to Egypt and where he was ambushed by a bomber and one man. But he did not give up without a fight, he was able to hit the German Inf on return fire and although he gave his life up, the Germans never set foot in Africa again. (Sorry, I’ve got to go I have a tear in my eye…)

    • RE: What counrty do you guys go after first? Germany or Japan

Germany. It is much easier for the 3 allies to gang up and contain Germany then it is to try and chase down Japan and then invade Japan’s home island.

    • RE: Axis Victory, Possible?

I usually try to get the axis combined IPC over 70 by the end of round 3 (gain about 6 IPC per rd–mostly Japan) then you have a chance. I figure if I get 71 IPC or so as the axis and the allies get 76, I can make up a 2 man disadvantage. And then in rd 4 try to take the IPC lead. I’ve found that if I’m not close to 70 by rd 3 then I’ve likely taken too long to mount a serious offensive and the allies are already building up for an invasion. If Ger can hold from Egypt to South Africa (6-7 IPC) then you’re in good shape. And you guys are right Japan must just press towards Russia as quickly as possible.

    • RE: Brit Strategy

I agree with these rankings, but I think if you get Ind Tech early enough in the game (rd1,2 or 3) this can trump Heavy Bombers. It instantly gives economic balance for the Axis (game over if one of the allies gets it) and with early military advantage it surpasses even heavy bombers, where you still have to spend 15 IPC to buy a bomber. I think with 30 IPC, I’d rather buy 15 men than 2 heavy bombers. Any country can use Ind Tech but heavy bombers can only really be used by US and UK maybe Japan, Ger and Rus generally can’t afford to spend 15 IPC on just one unit no matter how good it is.

Note: It is good to see the forums back up. I posted before the site got hacked (that must have sucked) and then I got caught in a Civ III time warp for about 7-8 months. I think the release of Star Wars woke me up.

Yoda did kick ass, as did Dooku. The tradition of strong Sith Lords continues. I don’t think there is anything better in movies than lightsaber battles. Oh, Mace was a bad-ass as well.
