2005, 4th Edition
I really love this game board, it’s definitely my favorite of all the A&A variants.
It is based on the classic map and adds additional territories and sea zones without being excessively divided, geographically. The only issue is the size of some of the coastal sea zones.
The physical board itself produced by Xeno Games is a perfect size, slightly larger than classic, but small enough to find room on most tables.

The idea is to defend while preserving the ability for strong counterattack. You want to be trading territory in Poland, not the outskirts of Moscow.
You gave an example of a huge stack of Soviet infantry failing to defend Moscow and a force infantry and fighters being able to resist conquest. This is sound; but if you are at the point of defending Moscow that way, you have already failed, in my opinion.
Perhaps you are working a war of attrition on behalf of the Allies, but the key to victory in the European theater is putting Germany on the defensive.

1 Artillery
Possibly vary by buying 1 less tank and 2 more infantry.
The point is to be able to defend well with tanks and be able to counterattack when the time comes.

Unless the Axis control Turkey, no naval units can cross the Hellespont into the Black Sea
Check the number of victory cities you control, you may already have 8, or will have 8 when you take Moscow assuming you don’t lose any you currently control
If the war is ongoing, concentrate on submarines, fighters, and tactical bombers to sink Allied naval units and make sure there are no transports able to make landing by having your air units stationed at air bases to scramble to defend against amphibious assaults from adjacent sea zones
I just received a higher res version of the game board, it is 2553 x 1661
A bmp of the game board was provided, but it’s too low res to be useful. I asked if the full res version is available but didn’t get a response.

Still in use, as a rule option, although the list has been changed and expanded.
Do you have house rules for the WaW tech? I’d like to see them.
