If you make an edit to ncm or placement before you post, there is no need to explain, unless it is especially complex.

And for scrambles, its almost always safe to assume I won’t if your odds are a 100%, if the tuv exchange improves for you if I scramble, and if their isn’t also an amphibious assault going on. There might be the odd exception but it will be quite rare.

@martin page 10 of the europe rules state that
“Friendly neutrals may not be attacked, and air units
may not fly over them. They can be moved into (but not
through) as a noncombat move by land units of a power

I had checked out a few of your games and saw that you were mostly doing a G1. My bid reflected that. Good move to change it up as it already catches me off guard.

@booper welcome to the league! I don’t have time to play right now but wanted to let you know it can sometimes take a few days to find a match especially when you are new and unranked. If you don’t hear back from someone who can play just post a reminder or two and also message those who looking for games. I saw that @dawgoneit and @TheVeteran were looking recently so they might still be available. Also be sure to read through the league rules as well. Good luck and have fun!

@superbattleshipyamato 95% is probably a good standard for a lot of battles (especially where the goal isn’t a game deciding move but just to get/deny income or cause attrition). But it depends on the context.

If the cost of losing the battle is high and the benefit of winning is low, than it may not be worth doing. In this particular case, the units you were risking against China were more valuable than the units you were attacking and were needed for India and the US. So here I probably would have wanted 100% odds and even then I’d want to consider whether committing to this would set me back elsewhere.

In other cases I might go to 80% or even lower, if the cost of losing is minimal and the benefit of winning is high.

@cojoh I’m not sure what you are referencing but page 23 of Europe and 22 of the Pacific book state the following:

“You can place fighters and tactical bombers into territories
containing an industrial complex controlled by your power
from the start of your turn, or on an aircraft carrier owned
by your power in a sea zone (even a hostile one) adjacent
to a territory with such an industrial complex. The aircraft
carrier can be either a new one currently being mobilized,
or an existing one already in place. You can’t place a new
fighter or tactical bomber on a carrier owned by a friendly
      power.”

The only restriction is that new air can’t be placed on an allied carrier.

@superbattleshipyamato Its certainly good for Japan to knock China out of the game. But its not usually decisive to the game in the way that taking India or stopping the US is and because those units are needed for the latter, I wouldn’t risk them attacking China without better odds and a better tuv swing. Its best to make sure that it is very unlikely that you lose more than inf and this is a battle where it is quite plausible that you would lose your art, arm and even air if the dice are marginally below average.

A key axis advantage in this game is that they (especially because of their airpower) can project power in several directions which can keep the allies on the outside. If the allies can force the axis to commit on one side or another in combats that risk that air, it often either blunts the axis pressure on the other side or opens up space for the allies to break through. And that often means even high probability battles are more risky for the axis than they might otherwise appear.

    • RE: Noooooo!

      @superbattleshipyamato it happens sometimes.

But given what you were risking, it is probably not a battle worth going for unless it was the best odds you were going to get and the battle was decisive to the game (and that doesn’t seem likely given that you were attacking China in Hopei).

The reason is that you were risking valuable units (needed to take India and keep the US at bay) to kill inf. Given that, 95% odds not only means that you lose sometimes but that even when you win, the casualties can favor your opponent. My guess is that the average tuv swing of the battle was either negative or at least close to 0.

Its good for Japan to knock China out of the game, but unless there was a reason that it was necessary to Japan’s victory or survival on this turn, this is not a battle I would go for unless I had 100% odds and a very positive average tuv swing.

    • RE: Farmboy (Axis) vs Elche (Allies + 18)

    • RE: Low Luck explained (& advertised)

One of the great things about this site of course is that it gives us plenty of opportunities to play the game how we prefer so nothing that follows is meant to begrudge your preference to play low luck.

But I don’t agree that the game becomes more tactical with low luck. I think you play exactly the same way except that with dice: 1) probabilities become a factor in game strategy to consider, 2) you lack certainty of the outcome of particular moves and so you also have to play to mitigate risk (as Andrew noted earlier) and 3) adapt your play to the sometimes unexpected outcomes provided by the dice. In most games, at least in the long run, these unexpected outcomes tend to hit both ways and so, to some extent, even out.

When you play with dice, they are almost always a factor that shape the outcome (even when dice feel fairly balanced there is variation across combats and some combats will be more significant than others), but its much rarer that they are the primary factor. Superior play can usually compensate (at least if one is playing to minimize risk), although of course there are exceptions. I know I’ve won a couple of games against superior opponents because of consistently great dice, but I don’t think I have ever lost a game where I can point to the dice as the key reason (even if I’m sometimes unhappy about the dice I roll).

@myygames said in Low Luck explained (& advertised):

@farmboy I think the dice make the tactic in that game have less impact. Your fate will not only be ruled by skill but also by a random factor. In that sense my opinion is that it becomes more tactical if played on low luck. But as you said, everyone can play the game he likes. And as my gamemate says: Playing with odds and being able to judge them correctly is also a great skill…

@andrewaagamer I do like the variance, but I also think that sometimes people have an impression that dice make A&A less of a strategy game and I don’t think that is the case at all. How you think about strategy in a game that involves probabilities is going to be different than one when you are dealing with certainties, but that doesn’t make it less strategic.

Obviously everyone will have their own preferences, and that is fine.

But I quite like the dice. This is because I find that having to account for probabilities makes the game more interesting and more challenging. I think it contributes to the strategy of the game (with the proviso that now and then you do just get diced and that sucks) Secondly, that sometimes one loses battles that they would normally likely win means that one has to adjust their play to unexpected circumstances…

I don’t think I’d find the game that interesting if I knew in advance that every battle I had committed slightly more than my opponent to was going to be a victory, or avoided all defensive combats where I knew I would lose.

It would also seem to me that low luck games would massively favour the axis without a massive bid since the axis is the side that has the capacity to expand in the early game and would have more freedom to do so knowing that it could choose 100% battles at less cost.

Also, although I don’t want to get stuck on this as the game is only very loosely a historical one (and so its rules and components should be judged more by what they add to gameplay than to historical accuracy), but there are plenty of battles where the side that should have been able to easily win lost because of factors that were not able to be calculated in advance. Bad weather, idiot general, etc. Dice allow for that sort of situation.
