      @CWO-Marc
      Great stuff, thank you very much! I added those to the list, alongside with some more snippets of famous speeches.

      What I forgot to tell you guys, is that I made the list public so anyone and everyone of you can enjoy it. You can find it on Spotify, it’s a playlist named simply “World War II”. Its cover picture is the most generic photo of a German soldier throwing a hand grenade (got a bit lazy with that one). Any comments about the playlist is welcome and I’m still looking for more songs to add to it!

    • Help needed to create A&A game night playlist

      Hello,

      it’s been a while since I last posted to forum, as my “brother-in-arms” is taking on a bit of hiatus from Axis & Allies to build a business. However, we have planned a weekend-long G40 live match somewhere around late April. As I tend to get excited easily I have already started to gather up World War 2 era songs for a Spotify playlist to bring atmosphere. Sure, ready-made lists already exists, but I find them to lean bit too much to American and British music.

      I now have some 120 songs spanning almost 7 hours, but as we all know G40 games tend to last lot longer. This is why I kindly ask for your help and expertise to expand my playlist and uncover more songs from the said era!

      I have tried to build a balance where every nation participated in the war have at least some representation. As a Finn, I started with Finnish songs and marches, then moved on to the German marches. I haven’t have much luck finding German popular music from the time. I then added a bunch of American and British music. I was also able to track down few Russian and Italian wartime songs. A friend of mine helped me find Japanese marches and pop songs, but I couldn’t resist the urge to throw in some traditional Japanese music also. Edith Piaf is of course ‘a must’. As to much surprise there exists fragments of speeches from Chamblerlain, Churchill, Roosevelt and even Hitler on Spotify, so I added some of those to the mix.

      So, I pretty much have American/British, Finnish and German portion covered. This is where you guys come in; help me balance out my playlist. I’m particularly interested in “minor power” songs; Axis satellite states, Poland, Jugoslavia, Norway, Greece and so on. Of course all suggestions are welcome!

      Thank you in advance!

      @GeneralHandGrenade:

      How come you didn’t include a “I don’t give a crap who signs up here as long as they don’t grate my nuts” option? You don’t have to be wolf or a hen to not have an opinion on other members of the community.

      I bet that option would get the most votes.

      But if you don’t give a crap, then you’re not likely to vote at all  😄

    • RE: USA: Pacific Fleet

      @Ichabod:

      No. IMHO, I think it’s better for the US to spend like 100% against Japan for the first 5-6 rounds. Then spend only the minimal amount for fleet/air to help the UK keep Gibraltar if required. The UK and Russia keep Moscow/Cairo secure while the US pounds Japan. Then once Japan is economically knocked out, then the US switches.

      Agreed. Altough sometimes I like to purchase a couple of ships on the Atlantic side, just see if I can lure Germany to buying navy as well.

      I don’t feel like there’s anything to apologize for. The large font is mildly irritating when one wishes to quote your text, but that’s it. Most of what you have said here has very good points, and when wrapped in this testosterone fuming style makes it entertaining read. I think people here have been overreacting a bit to this whole thing. We should all take a deep breath here and consider is there really damage done?

      1. Fallout 2 (I prefer the US version)
      2. Super Mario Brothers 3
      3. Grand Theft Auto -series (with IV being the best)
      4. Axis and Allies Global 40 2nd Edition
      5. NHL -series

      Doesn’t feel right putting games I love in order like this  😐 There are also so many that deserves to be there with the others. I think I need to take a shower after this, and go apologize to my game collection.

      "Gargantua?"  What kind of name is that?  I trample on such little people!  The Lord Curtmungus will not be assailed.  I am a herald and ambassador of the TRUE AXIS AND ALLIES WAY OF LIFE!Â

      @The:

      If anything, it is different, I applaud Larry Harris for trying something new.

      Me too. The site does use the “secret” word, which suggests the addition of a dynamic that is missing in a&a. Whether that is as in block games or Diplomacy or whatever I await with interest. Look forward to the opportunity to play it.

      That “secret” part caught my eye too. Maybe units are counters, so the opponent(s) won’t know which types of units you have? But hey, who knows…

    • RE: Questions about Game play

      Hi again!

      1. I haven’t played 1941 for a while, but a quick look at the map suggests that you’re right; you can’t mobilize them elsewhere. And no, you cannot mobilize them from your Allies IC. But not to worry, you really wouldn’t want to build sea units with Soviet Union anyway.

      2. Yes, you put it in a sea zone next to the territory with the industrial complex.

      3. Again yes, all units defend. The owner of the territory decides the casualties.

      4. I’m not sure if I get this, but it seems you’ve had a little misunderstanding with the combat; combat occurs after a player moves his/her units IN THE SAME territory/sea zone that enemy has units during the combat move phase. After ALL combat moves are declared by the player, you move on to the combat phase.
        So no, there aren’t any unresolved combats going on at the very beginning of the game. The first combat usually happens after Russia has made it’s combat move, trying to push the Germans further away from Moscow.

      5. No, land units can NEVER participate in sea combat. They can still die, though. For example, if your navy with transports is attacked and loses with enemy units still remaining, all transports and units within them are automatically destroyed, since they can’t fight back.

      Hope this helps out! Reading the rulebook from cover to cover can be tedious, but it’s still strongly recommended. It’s a really good and elaborate rule book, although some rules are found in places that you might not expect.

      Have fun playing!

    • RE: Taranto, Tobruk, or Both?

      @Private:

      Thanks DrunkenCat & ShadowHAwk.

      Doesn’t victory in East Africa and then the return of those units in UK2, plus Italy’s only having 1 TT left, etc all safeguard Egypt anyway?

      I gave up on Tobruk very early in my 40G career following a bad loss, deciding that Taranto + Tobruk was an unnecessary risk.

      Whilst I have lost Egypt on occasion this has not been the usual outcome, despite not attacking Tobruk.

      Of course. It’s just my preference to neuter Italy very early, even though it’s more risky than just protecting Egypt. It just suites my playstyle, and solves lots of my problems, like the Italian can opener (not completely, but takes some edge off of it).

      @Private:

      Taranto or Tobruk?

      Taranto certainly, unless the G navy becomes a better target for UK air.

      If doing Taranto, why is Tobruk more important than East Africa?

      Because Italians has a possibility to reinforce Tobruk.

    • RE: Taranto, Tobruk, or Both?

      I usually go for both. Losing Cruiser in 91 for german sub makes it a bit more difficult, but I think it’s still doable.

      Taranto: Cruiser, Carrier, Destroyer and Tac Bomber from sz98 and two Figthers and Strat Bomber from London. This gives me 96% chance even with scramble if no German planes in S. Italy.

      Tobruk is a lot riskier, as I can get only 88% chance with the Fighter from Malta and of every land unit that can reach. It gets even more riskier if I have already lost my sz91 Cruiser, since I have to risk losing the sz96 battle with only one Fighter or tie up the Malta Fighter here, leaving the assault itself weak. Or I can risk Taranto with pulling a Destroyer elsewhere. I still think its worthwhile, as I have a chance of knocking out Italys main force in Africa.

      When I’m playing Axis, I usually counter this by landing a fighter in Tobruk and Tac Bomber in Rome on G1. Taranto usually still happens, but it takes options away from the British.

    • RE: Top 10 World War II action films of all time

      If you can ever get your hands on some classic Finnish WWII movies, I can warmly recommend the 1955 version of The Unknown Soldier (Tuntematon Sotilas) and Winter War (Talvisota) from 1989. Great action and great dialogue. Both can be found subtitled in English, though you might have to do some digging  😄

      The Unknown Soldier tells a story of machine gun Company in a Finno-Russian Continuation War through 1941-1944. Väinö Linna, the author of the book, actually fought in the said war. The movie has a nice flow to it, and the characters become more and more lovable. Another version of the movie was made in 1985, and the newest is just making it’s way out. I wouldn’t recommend the 1985 version, especially if you haven’t watched the original first.

      The Winter War is still a bit more factual and relies mostly on the action sequences, and less on characters. The book was written basing on diaries and interviews of those who fought in the Winter War.

      Anyway, if you ever come across these movies, be sure to check them out!

      Once I saw an airbase build in Holland Belgium on G1. It did it’s job in protecting the German battleship from UK1 attack, but rest of the game it was just sitting there. Staring awkardly.

      @CWO:

      @Der:

      It’s hard to believe that powder can still be good after 70+ years!

      That’s actually part of the problem.  If I’m not mistaken, certain types of explosives can destabilize over time and become more sensitive to shock.  I think this is particularly the case with nitrocellulose explosives, whose nitroglycerin component apparently re-liquifies and seeps out of the solid matrix when it gets too old.  It’s sort of an extreme example of the concept of the “best before” date that is more ordinarily applied to packaged foods and pharmaceutical products.

      This is true. The picric acid used in hand grenades still during WWII reacts with the metal casing of the grenade to form picrate salt, which is highly unstable.

      WWII era hand grenades are problem also in Finland because of the “Weapons Cache Case”. As the Continuation War against Soviet Union was turning bad, some of the Finnish officers decided to hide large amounts of weapons and explosives all around the country in case the Soviets would occupy Finland. Those supplies were meant to be used in guerilla warfare against the occupation. Since this never happened, some of those caches still remain untouched and are discovered from time to time during house renovations, building excavations etc. The weapons are still functional and often sold on black market, and the hand grenades pose a serious threat to anyone handling them and to those nearby.

      edit: some typos

    • RE: How to handle G1 DOW against Russia?

      @Fatespinner:

      I plan to use my ships and fighters to kill the UK fleet.

      The allies players are no pros. We have played a few games and always switched sides, teams and factions. So if Russia retreats everything to Moscow then G5 would not be possible or? How much is the time difference between taking Moscow on G6 compared to waiting for the normal War declaration and then attack?

      Depends on Russian buys, unit placements and movement. I have couple of times conquered Moscow on G5, because the Russian player invested on tanks and artillery, and failed to move the Leningrad stack to defend Moscow on time.

    • RE: Table Space for Global

      I used to have two tables that I set beside each other so the Global map could just barely fit. Luckily the tables were the same height. Chairs were used to hold unit boxes and the box for dice were held also on a chair, or on the floor. Now that the other table is gone, it’s even more inconvenient and we haven’t played Global at my place since. Though I gotta say that it’s bit tricky at my friends flat too; he has a short-legged coffee table that can hold 3/4 of the board and the last part has to be placed on couple of footstools that are even on lower level. It’s a pain in the back.

      I really need my own Axis&Allies cave. Maybe one day…
