    • RE: Attacking and Defending

Ok, that really clears it up.  To put it in terms I am more recently familiar with, it seems like, and what we were thinking initially so thanks for helping with this, is that the casualties are assigned much like Risk (The person being hit chooses his casualties and attack/defend is sort of simultaneous).

The specific targets makes sense, with the example of the submarine not being able to target aircraft and such.  Next I am going to have to comb over the amphibious assaults, loading and unloading.  Do you mind if we print out that little step by step chart you typed out Panther?

I am going to check that video out now Baron, I’ll let you know afterwards how the viewing went.

      Thanks guys.  :-)

EDIT:  I checked out the video Baron, that actually helped me out a lot.  I am a big visual learner so thanks for that.  Seeing the strip setup and the dice rolled and hits/misses/casualties spelled it out!

    • Attacking and Defending

As we were reading through the rules (my father, brother, and I), we are getting most thing squared away.

I think we have a handle on initial setup, movement, and round/turns.

We’ve come to the combat section and we are a bit confused.  So when you move into a hostile territory and all phases are done aside from combat, you move the attacking and defending pieces to the battle strip.  Then the attacker does any special combat first like submarines?  Then general combat.  You roll your dice and if it is equal to or lower than the number of their corresponding position on the chart they score a hit and the targeted piece is moved to casualties?

Then it’s the defenders turn to roll?  How does defense work exactly?  Do you “block hits” or is it happening simultaneous like we think?  We are a bit confused and I hope you veteran players can understand my questions because I’m sure my explanation is a little wonky.

      Thanks in advance.

    • Kursk 1943

Has anyone picked up Osprey’s new release of Kursk 1943: The Southern Front?  I’ll mostly likely get it, because I love collecting Osprey titles, but I was wondering how this campaign book was?  Over the years, Osprey, in my opinion, has really improved from being books about troop description and plate coloring to some really well researched, concise and specific history books.

Speaking of Osprey, if anyone has extra books or books they don’t want, of the six History Essentials of World War 2, please let me know.  I’ve been hunting them for sometime and they are always out of stock or super pricey from third party vendors.

Also, the M3 Grease Gun book which came out last year, phenomenal!  Probably one of my favorite in the Weapon series.

Thanks YG, I’ll pop on over to the 1942 forum. Ok, I was wondering about those little triangle things! Lol.

    • RE: Fun Cooperative Games

Haha!  I have Left For Dead 1 and 2 on my xbox.  I played those quite frequently and still play from time to time.  I have a steam account but don’t game often on my computer, or multiplayer anyway.  I usually play old games from Good Ol’ Games or rpgs.

Speaking of coop shooters, have you tried the new Ghost Recon?

    • Fun Cooperative Games

Has anyone tried Zombicide or the Lord of the Rings Living Card Game?  I own both and must say they are refreshing in the department of coop games!  Zombicide is a beautiful coop survival game that pits your team against waves of the undead.  The pieces are plastic miniatures with cardboard maps of burnt out stores and homes etc.  The game can be a little pricey, but it is well worth it, for the production quality is really amazing.  It is fast, fun, and very easy to learn.  The miniatures can be painted as well!

The LOTR LCG is phenomenal.  You build decks with certain heroes from the books, and with your lonesome (solo rules) or friends, embark on quests with the heroes you control.  The cards are really well illustrated and my favorite bit is you can own everything as opposed to a collectible game where rarity and such comes into play.  The learning curve is not too bad and it is very fun.  Fantasy Flight Games makes it and I highly recommend it…especially if you’re a Tolkien fan.

    • Hello Everyone!

I just found this website because of a video I watched promoting the community here!  I recently got back into playing Axis and Allies with my brother and father. I have been watching tutorial videos on the Cliffside Bunker’s Youtube channel, by Young Grasshopper.  One of his videos recommended this website as a great resource, community, and place to make friends.

I am not 100% sure if this is the right area to post an introduction, but it seemed to be.  I’ve read through the forum guidelines and topic discussion rules.

So a little about myself.  I am thirty six, work as a home health aid for my handicapped brother, and I have been a table-top gamer for the past twenty eight years.  Generally, I play Dungeons and Dragons, Call of Cthulhu, Cyberpunk 2020, and the like.  In high school I got introduced to my friend’s on again/off again Axis and Allies game.  This was in '94-'98.  During my college years, I gamed here and there and when my brother got sick our gaming became a little less regular.

Now a days, we still play table-top role playing games when we get the chance with our friends, Memoir '44, Family Business, Zombicide, and other board games. As I mentioned, recently, we picked up a copy of Axis and Allies 1942 2nd Edition.  On Young Grasshopper’s advice, we also snatched up a set of Global for when we get more comfortable.  I figured this would be an awesome place to re-introduce myself to the game and its complexities, and possibly make some new friends.

I am a pretty laid back guy with an irregular schedule due to my job and responsibilities to my brother.  I’m interested in history, in particular, Rome, Edo Period Japan, Medieval Scandinavia, the Crusades, the American Revolution, the Civil War, and both World Wars.  I generally read pulp fiction like H.P. Lovecraft, R.E. Howard, Edgar Burroughs, fantasy like J.R.R. Tolkien and Brian Jacques. I love, I guess what you could call modern military pulp, such as Mac Bolan and Phoenix Force.  I’m a nut for Italian movies of the gore horror, spaghetti western, and macaroni combat variety and have a deep love of grind house, exploitation, drive in, and B movie entertainment.

As for my musical tastes, Classic Rock is where it is at.  I also enjoy old time radio shows like Johnny Dollar, Lights Out, and Our Miss Brooks.  I’m a big fan of EC Comics, Commando Comics, and other two fisted tales!

I think that pretty much sums up everything.  With all that being said, I think you’ve got a good picture of what I grew up on and currently enjoy.  I spend most days help my brother and hanging out with him as well.  See you around!
