    • RE: After Action Reports

      Title: German Onslaught
      Date: 14 Feb 2009
      Scenario: 1942
Special Rules: NO & Tech used
      Victor: Axis by concession
Game Length: 2 players, 3 hours, 2 rounds
Bias:   Even, both playing 4th game, me taking Allies
      Description:

      Turn 1:
Japan destroyed US Hawaian fleet & UK fleet at sz 35, took 1 Chinese territory and concentrate land attack on Buryatia & Soviet Far East.
Russia re-took Belorussia, Eastern Ukraine & Ukraine but with few units left due to bad dice roll. Built-up defence.
German pushed heavily into Russia with land units, 4 fighters & 1 bomber, taking back Belorussia, Eastern Ukraine & Ukraine plus Karelia. Russia losses are great due to bad dice again. Destroyed UK sz 12 fleet, leaving sz 1 & 2 untouch. Got paratrooper.
UK, too greedy with occupaying France (successfully taken), built a carrier & support ship to protect its fleet, totally ignored German sz5 fleet & left only 3 land units + 1 US bomber on homeland. BIG MISTAKE!
Italy failed to retake France but finished off UK destroyer at sz15 & support German on eastern front.
US destroyed remaining Japan fleet at Hawaian, built a carrier and support ship on western US to prepare for Europe invasion.

      Turn 2:
Japan continued to push through Soviet Far East. Attacked on China was halted by the loss of 2 fighters and 2 infantry in the invasion of Yunnan (US fighter), not many land units left.
Russia suffered huge losses on Turn 1, can only retake Belorussia and built on defence by concentrating on Caucasus & Moscow. Only 2 infantry left at fast east.
German began DOUBLE assault on London & Moscow and sucessfully taken both! London was taken by fleets with transport from both sz 5 and sz 12 with bomber carrying paratrooper. On Russian side, German pushed 3 tanks, 1 artillery, 1 infantry,  4 fighter, 1 bomber with paratrooper into Moscow, sacrificing its fighters to keep alive the land units. Too happy & forgot to retake France. Total IPC end of turn is 130+.
At this point Allies (me) to dishearten to think much on next move.
UK, cant do much but destroyed German fleet at sz 6. Failed to take Libya with units from Egypt & Trans-Jordan (bad dice roll).
Italy continue to support eastern front operation.
US retake London with Atlantic fleet. Got super sub.

After analysing current situation and German boasting to build 5,6 battleship to kill off UK & US fleet. Allies conceded.

      Observations/Recommendations:
It is essential for UK to finish off German sz5 fleet on turn 1. Allies too engross in capturing France coz from previous game, that move provided huge income boost to UK & US while disrupting German’s eastern front campaign.
German can easily swarm into Moscow if combine with air power within 2 turns.
Never thought that German can pull off double assault successfully. Paratroopers helped alot on that.
      Good lesson learned.

    • Capturing Capital

Some clarifications needed on Capturing Capital.

If UK captured Berlin, Germany has to surrender all its IPC (just collected the last turn) right? This is in addition to the lost of 10 IPC value right.

So even if Germany/Italy captured back Berlin, BUT if UK captured it again the next turn causing Germany to lose all IPC again, that means there is no way for Germany to recover from this event right?

      Thanks.

    • RE: After Action Reports

Russia consolidated position towards Germany to mainly to defend. Built all infantry.

It’s not a bad move, but I think the days of Russia building all infantry are over.  Russia (esp in 1941) needs some offensive firepower.  Russia needs to at least threaten the German with a counterattack R2.  Make them play cautious.  You can’t threaten with just infantry backed up by a lone tank or artillery.

Thats what i felt as well, Russia needs to fight back.

Bias:  2 players both 1st time play, me (being more “experience” with strategies learned from axisandallies.org) was Axis

Even for your first time play, it seemed like you employed a very “tuned” strategy.  Guess A&A.org helps a lot. 😉

Hehe… I have studied A&A.org quite some time before playing my first game. Thanks to all the ideas posted.

    • Aircraft movement & Amphibious Assault

      Hi, i am new here.

2 issues which i am not clear about:

      1. Aircraft movement into/out of island group
From the rulebook, pg 26, it is stated that
“To determine range, count each space your air unit enters “after takeoff.” When moving over water from a coastal territory or an island group, count the first sea zone entered as one space. When flying to an island group, count the surrounding sea zone and the island group itself as one space each.”

So my understanding is when you are flying out from an island, the seazone the island is on is counted as 1 movement. What about landing into an island? My understanding from above is that the seazone and island is counted as 1 movement for landing. Am i right?

      1. Amphibious Assault
Example, 1941 Japan turn 1, attack Phillipines with Battleship from sz61 with 2 transports carrying 3 infantry & 1 tank.
If battleship is destroyed together with destroyer during sea battle in the same round of combat, does the 2 Jap transport and the US transport survive? I take it as yes and the land units can proceed to assault the island right?

      Thanks.

      Title:  Unstoppable Axis
      Date:  9th of January
Special Rules:  NO’s and Tech were both used. 1941 scenario
      Victor:   axis victory, by concession
Game Length:  4 turns, around 6 hours + 1 hour initial setup & rules explanation
Bias:  2 players both 1st time play, me (being more “experience” with strategies learned from axisandallies.org) was Axis

      Description:
1st turn - Germany swarmed into Baltic States, E Poland & Ukraine easily, destroyed most of UK fleets but lost badly in Egypt, built mostly tanks & infantry.
Russia consolidated position towards Germany to mainly to defend. Built all infantry.
Japan destroyed UK fleet in sz 35 & US fleet in sz 56,53,50, losing the battleship in the process but captured Phillipines though, captured Burma & 3 Chinese states.
UK retaliate in Egypt & captured Libya (mistake), built mostly ships & transports.
Italy recapture Libya & weakened UK present in Egypt, support Germany in defence of France.
US totally ignore tha Pacific & concentrate on Atlantic front, building planes at E. US.
China lost its fighter, just concentrated on defence.

2nd turn - Germany captured Karelia with ground units & killed of UK fleet that was building up to at sz 7 with planes and cruiser, moved tanks forward to secure eastern front and continued to build tanks. Russia recaptured Karelia & further strengthened defence by stacking infantry, moved infantry from eastern side towards Moscow. Japan captured India & more Pacific island, no threat from US. UK with the complete lose of its fleet decide to build lots of fighters & bombers.
Italy captured Egypt & continued to assist Germany in defence, its fleet wasnt threathened at all. US started moving planes to UK, continue to build fleet at Atlantic front.

3rd turn - Germany retake Karelia & continued moving tank east, built bombers & tanks & SBR UK. Russia concentrated on defence & built all fighter this round. Japan built a India IC, started to build-up units in India to advance to Russia, capture Wake Is. and prepare for an assault at US the next turn. UK attacked France with planes killing all Axis units but cant capture due to no land units, continue to stack bomber.Italy capture Trans-Jordan, assist in France & Ukrain’s defence. US move CV to Atlantic & build land units to be shipped to Europe next turn.

4th turn - Germany fortified France & captured Caucasus, continue to move east, launch air attack on London to kill of its bombers built-up, & SBR Russia. Russia counter attack Caucasus with fighter & infantry but lost, leaving defence Moscow weakened. Japan launched attack on W. US & captured it. Italy move more units to Caucasus to support attack on Moscow. US disorientated after losing W US. Allied surrendered as it was clear that Axis is dominating + it was almost 4am.

Observations/Recommendations: 1st time play for both of us,  movements not coordinated properly & spent long time strategising moves thus 1st 2 turns took us almost 2 hours per turn to complete. Ignoring the significant of early SBR especially Allied player. N.O. favours the Axis player. Me as Axis has the advantage of knowing the rules & strategies well compared to Allied. Japan became unstoppable if left unchecked. We research on Tech but wasnt effective as we dont get the 1s we wanted & VERY hard to hit the “6” even with 2 tokens.
Now, looking forward for next game & with 2 more players.
