    • RE: The Japan Playbook

      @Cow:

      If you are playing a live game, just trust your instincts. Be fearless. That is the best way to learn.

      Best strategic advice ^^ Sometimes I purposely  play “experiment” games where I know I have a good chance at losing. But I learn from those games and can synthesize all my new ideas into a stronger future game and it makes me a better player in the long run. Also, I look at how people have beaten me and there’s no shame in copying errrr I mean “learning” from them too.

      When I started A&A I lost all the time, now I am a decent player in my group because I just try things out. It’s only a board game :P

    • RE: Best Strategy for Strong Anzac

      @Shin:

      Nope!  THey can gain FIC after Japan has taken if the same way the USA can take Normandy and use the Minot IC there after Germany takes it.

      Can someone confirm this (with a quote from the rulebook maybe)? My understanding of the rules is rusty, I’ll be sure to reread the whole manual after work.

      I don’t think anzac can build a minor in french indo china cause they “liberate it” for france instead of conquering it for themselves. Since the territory is french there can’t be an anzac minor.

      I might try something where on every 6th research roll you purchase you are guranteed a success (assuming the other 5 are fails).

      Do it before a big attack. Otherwise it is a money sink. 5 ipc you never get back for a 1/6 chance to get a random tech that may or may not be good.

      That’s a good approach if research is done at all. I just think research isn’t very strong all around. Maybe it should be improved next game version

    • RE: British scramble on G1 attack

      You are playing it wrong:

      @rulebook:

      A quick reaction team of no more than 3 defending
      fighters and/or tactical bombers (strategic bombers can’t
      scramble) located on each island or coastal territory
      that has an operative air base
      can be scrambled to
      defend against attacks in the sea zones adjacent to those
      territories.

      Oh wow! Thanks! I wonder if this is a change from the first edition…

    • Research, is it viable?

      I haven’t seen a recent post concerning research and development so I got to ask. Has anyone utilized research as a primary strategy? I’ve tried it a few times on Japan/US/Germany (richest nations) and 90% of the time it’s a waste of money.

      I feel like research should be done only by the aforementioned nations and only if they are in a bad way. Research is HUGE if you get it, so I think of it as a last effort gamble if the game is going against you.

      Thoughts?

    • RE: How many rounds to finish a game?

      I totally agree. Use a timer like in chess. Real life commanders do have a lot of time pressure, and if they wait too long, the window of opportunity will pass. Why should a wannabe A&A general Rommel have the luxury of spending the time it takes to sit back in his armchair and let the BC do the math ? The real Rommel slept in a tent, got bit by mosquitos and starved like his men, and he had to attack in a hurry before the Brits attacked him.

      I agree with the above. When my group plays, we use a houserule that every nation has 20 minutes from phase 1 to combat rolling. Going over costs 1 IPC per minute. It ensures the game moves smoothly and that people don’t just sit there “thinking” all day… We just want to play a game not lose a year of our lives haha. Also, if the next nation can start making it’s moves without interfering with the current player’s turns (and players agree to do this) we just start them going at the same time (Best example is Italy Anzac).

      Also as a side note. Sitting there using a calculator defeats the purpose of playing a game. It’s a matter of your skill and ability to size up a battle. Not using a computer to play in place of yourself. I won’t stop someone from using a calculator…but they have 20 minutes. Use it wisely. :P

    • RE: Game Aids Europe 1940 2nd Edition

      @JamesAleman:

      They look nice, USA political card mentions movement restrictions in Atlantic, Are there some in the Pacific as well?

      I realize this question was asked like a year ago, but for anyone still wondering…Nope, there are no movement restrictions for the U.S. in the Pacific. Just Atlantic. I don’t have a rulebook in front of me, but I know Japan has a movement restriction against the U.S. It’s something like no sz next to U.S. territories.

    • RE: British scramble on G1 attack

      Correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure UK cannot scramble at all. Scrambling requires the airbase to be an island territory. UK is not an island since it consists of 3 territories. Most all the islands are in the Pacific (Japan does count as an island since it is one territory). I’ve seen several people mention UK scrambling, so please tell me if I’m playing it wrong and tell me where in the rules you find it. Thanks :D
