Did anybody else catch the D-Day guest appearance in the morgue with Ducky and Palmer on the Feb 22, 2011 NCIS episode?

Were they actually playing it, or was the box just in the background?

It was a bit more than simply in the background but they weren’t playing it. Ducky was profiling a dead guy and they had a bunch of his stuff. One of the things was a D-Day set. They had the box open and you couldn’t see the ‘cover’ but it was the pieces half sitting in the lid. I clearly read the upside down “Axis and Allies D-Day” on the side. Tough to miss that red/brown box.
They’d did fingerprints on the pieces and showed he played the ‘bad guys’ preferentially and was support of his sociopathy. Kind of ridiculous if you know the game on the fingerprint angle. Accidentally on point though since the bad guys win more often.
Was just referred to as a wargame.

Was it a new episode (season 8) or an old one ?

Tuesday’s episode was new this season. The scene was in the last quarter/last third of the episode.

Heh, my wife saw this episodes in reruns the other day and told me about it.
She then asked me if I was a psychopath for playing as Germany all the time. =)

Think I stopped watching that show a LONG time ago before even this episode.
