  @DoManMacgee I agree so far. I don’t play Tournaments so at some point we will not agree. But basically all versions of A&A should be easy to learn. A&A is not a hex and counter game. I miss the Classic Rulebook, it was 4 pages if I remember correct.

  Lets take the Road Movement rule. In North Africa anything with wheels can move 5 spaces on a road. I love it. But in Stalingrad only Tanks and Mech can move 2 spaces and 2 additional spaces if they start at a road, but Assault guns and Rocket Launchers can not move 2 additional spaces. Now that don’t make sense since the Panzer III and the Stug III had the same range and the same speed limit. And also the ZIS 42 halftrack was the excact same as the ZIS 42 Rocket Launcer. I guess its because of game balance. But for playability all motorized vehicles should be able to Road Movement. So this rule beats me for sure.

  I also noticed there are 6 spaces between Grain elevator and Tractor Factory. So it takes a Tank 3 Rounds to move between those points. A Round is 2 weeks. So it takes 6 weeks to drive 15 miles, or 25 km. I am awere it was a lot of rubble and debris in the streets of Stalingrad, but I walk 15 miles, or 25 km, on my feet in 'bout 3 hours. OK, lets give this to game balance and playability, it’s just a game after all. But it does bother me.

  Errata & Optional Rules: Discussion

  Upon reviewing the rules a bit, naturally the ones that stick out and cause problems are the ones that don’t pertain to RISK’s core combat mechanics.

  Indonesia

  Let’s say the USSR attacks the Arab League: Indonesia is supposed to stay neutral in this case, but can NATO still influence them, somehow? Does WE have to be the one to do it, or could it be UK? The ‘quick and dirty’ solution would just be to reverse the rule treating Indonesia as a separate entity, and say that the territory sides with NATO, if the Arab League is attacked by the USSR. Since they are aligned with WE, their troops should be replaced with WE (blue) troops, if/when this happens.

  An obvious optional rule in this situation might be that Arab League territories join WE but Indonesia joins the UK; chalk this up to representing Singapore, Malaya, etc. or just with the continent of Australia being aligned with UK, in this game.

  The alternate solution is to clarify the rule to be “an attack on Indonesia is not treated as an attack on the Arab League, but an attack on the Arab League DOES count as an attack on Indonesia.” I think this probably most closely reflects the intention of the mechanics.

  Possibly a better (albeit more complicated) solution would be to allow NATO to use their influence roll towards their affiliated neutral alliance OR towards Indonesia. If they successfully influence Indonesia, they would replace Indonesia’s troops with their own. This treats Indonesia more like a “minor neutral” such as they would be in E&W; the reason I don’t like this is that it creates a new set of rules around a single territory, instead of just conforming to the existing/general rules.

  Since the USSR has the option to ATTACK Indonesia, they can always gain the territory that way; this rule would simply address the fact that NATO does not have such a mechanism to gain the territory.

  Influence

  Since the opening-game balance is presupposed around the OAS being at +1 to US and China being at +1 to the USSR, the obvious optional rule to include would be one not allowing diplomacy until the 2nd round of play. This would reflect the mechanical realities in E&W, of everybody starting the game with no spies in play (barring the USSR spending their “round zero” mobilization cash on spies.)

  The rule limiting NATO to influencing only their affiliated neutral could also be changed… Although it might have to be limited to “once you’re already receiving +2 from them” to prevent dogpiling.
  The intention of the limitation is to keep the game simple and fast; it’s also meant to avoid some of the pitfalls of E&W’s system, whereby there’s really only one correct choice, so just hammer that option as early and often as possible.

  Nukes vs. Capitols

  An interesting thing with the mechanic of nuclear weapons being added to a RISK game, is that it creates the possibility of a territory being cleared of armies. Since armies are used to denote territory ownership (serving the function performed by control markers, in A&A-type games) it stands to reason that a territory with no armies on it is controlled by no one. But what if the territory has a capitol on it?

  This is an interesting thing, because the existence of a capitol implies ownership of the territory, corresponding to a specific faction, without there being troops in the territory (i.e. which would be the normal way to denote ownership of the territory.)

  Obviously, a territory with a city but no armies is not controlled by anyone; this makes targeting cities with nukes more appealing, since it doubles the loss in “income” – similar to how targeting Industrial Complexes with nukes in E&W effectively doubles the reduction in infantry production, on that territory.

  So the questions seem to be:

  Can you place troops on your capitol, if there are currently no troops there? Do you get credit for “controlling” your capitol, if there are no troops in its territory? Does your capitol allow you to get credit for “controlling” the territory it resides in (including the bonus for a city)?

  I think my answers to these would be: yes, maybe, and no (respectively.)

  If a nuke wipes all of the armies off of a territory without a capitol, my general assumption was that this works the same as if a nuke in E&W reduced the IPC value of the territory to zero – meaning it cannot produce any infantry. The question then is, do capitols provide some immunity to this? Does not providing this immunity make nuking capitols (exclusively) too powerful in the overall meta? Again, these would have to be born out with more playtesting.

  No, the British player cannot buy supply with pre-game variable RPs.
  On page 9, the plastic game pieces are referred to as combat units and trucks. As supply is not a plastic piece, they are not combat units.

  Under LAND UNITS on page 30: “Infantry, mechanized infantry, artillery, anti-tank guns, anti-aircraft artillery, scout cars, and tanks are combat units, but trucks are not combat units.” Supply is not listed here as a combat unit.

  Looks like we should have defined combat units more carefully, but the phrase “combat unit” appears dozens of times in the rulebook and it is clear in those uses that supply is not considered a combat unit.

  Howdy, you get what you put into it, the figure cards reminds me of the minis, in the old Buck Rogers in the 25th. Century Game.
  You can always House Rule the game, to one’s delight. I plan to RoundRobin it, in the near future(another post, another day).
  I already gotten some minis from my old die casts Triacs and Vrocs sets.
  Adding to the game fighter bombers, hover copters, VTOL Fighters that operate from the Cruisers, Recon. Jeeps, and, a “Sour Grapes” land missile carrier.
  You can order the Bucket of Modern Air and Sea Forces, where you can pick up some nice nuke attack submarines.
  Also APCs and Hover tanks, from Fortress America and transports from A&Allies Games.
  Supplements of Forces will add more spice to your gaming, it work wonders for the old Buck Rodgers game.
  My RoundRobin will only use the original units of eight, that came with the game.
  After all Zvezda used the Command and Colors system quite nicely for some of their games.
  G.I. Joe powered by Axis and Allies rules will go quite nicely, give it time.
  Who knows what the future brings, Lord of the Rings Battle of the Five Armies powered by Axis and Allies would be interesting, thanks, Pellulo

  @Krieghund Thank you for the swift reply. I don’t think that thought crossed my opponent’s mind (we usually play Global, so the idea of attacking Germany…and leaving oneself open to counterattack…is not on the radar).

  Such an opener is totally viable. Not sure if it is a top strategy, but it works.
  For me that opening includes sinking the UK fleet at 106 (Canada), 109 and 111. Just leaving the channel fleet alone. That takes all DDs and TTs away from UK and gives Germany some free reign of Atlantic the first few turns. And I build a Carrier plus sub/DD or 2 TTs.

  Sea Lion itself is easily countered by UK, but they have to invest to do so, and possibly have to neglect defense of Cairo.

  And Germany can use it’s fleet to take Gibraltar and put US in an awkward position.

  That opens the MED for Italy and enables them to create some disturbance for Allies. (but do not expect too much from them, it is a minor power, no matter what)

  Starting G2, Germany should build and move all they can to Russia, though. That is where the war is won. “Owning” Atlantic is nice, but the money lies in Caucasus, as you noted.

  Hey there,

  maybe you followed my questions regarding the Russian revolution (here: https://www.axisandallies.org/forums/post/1779566). If so you should be familiar with the situation.

  If not: Below you see a pre-Revolution situation. Austria finished its moves. It wiped out the British troops in Kazakhstan. An easy win, but a huge strategic error.
  The Russian player then tried to trap those troops by provoking the Revolution with a withdrawal from Livonia and the Liberation of Ukraine. It failed, interestingly. So Ukraine stayed contested. Subsequently, the Entente accepted without hesitation the offered armistice and the Austrian army could move out of Russia to fight another day.

  That said, I would like to know if you would accept the armistice even if Russia succeeded in liberating Ukraine and therefore trapping the Austrian army for good. What say you?

  You never control a sea zone.
  Sea zones are either friendly (contain no enemy surface warship) or hostile (contain enemy surface warship(s)).
  The result of a sea battle is that you have cleared it of enemy units (or not).

  The practical application in an actual game is the following:

  This can adversely affect naval battles with multiple unit types on both sides and land battles in which the defender has a bomber(s) or a defense with multinational forces present.

  It can cause the defender to misallocate his hits not knowing if the attacker is going to roll hot, cold or par.

  Round 1. Red has three rattlers from NP Base attack and destroy a White jet on N. Greenland 1 VP hex. They land on hex controlled by Black. While 2 Rattlers from ice hex destroy Blue jet, for a lost of a Rattler, in a central Greenland hex. Again the remaining Rattler lands in 1 VP N. Greenland hex, that Black controls.

  Moves C with trooper that lands on 1VP island two hexes from Main Blue Base. The Rattler from main base lands on captured island.

  Builds Rattler on its main base.

  Blue using special ability, has C(now with trooper) and jet, attack 1VP island two hexes
  from Main Blue Base. Island defended by Red C, trooper, and, Rattler. Only Blue trooper left, island is taken.

  Meanwhile 2 Jets from Apogee Base attack Cobra’s six Rattlers on 1VP N. Greenland hex. The jets are lost, along with 2 Red Rattlers.

  Builds a Jet at its base and Apogee.

  Black moves from its main base, two hexes closer to Main White Base, of a C with trooper and Rattler. Two Rattlers attack 3 Jets at Apogee Base, from N.Greenland 1VP hex. Both are lost and a Blue Jet destroy.
