When using Fortifications how does it work when the attacker is attacking 2 fronts on the territory.  Take the battle of France as an example.  The Fort is placed between France and Germany.  Now what happens if Germany attacks from Holland and W.Germany.  How do you apply the bonus?  Do all the French get the bonus if at least one unit attacks across the border of the fort?

    Here is the rule:

Fortifications are now standard units and can only protect one land border (or coastline) from enemy attack. These cost 8 IPC and provide a +1 defense to all Infantry and Artillery in combat. Once built they are placed on these borders and cannot move and if captured are destroyed. The defending units can only get the modification against units attacking from the border where the unit is placed. All other attacks proceed normally. If the attack is an amphibious invasion, on the first round all defending artillery gets a free shot (after any Shore Bombardments). Note: Gibraltar fortification defends against attack from either sea zone.

  • Shouldn`t matter what troops are in France. It says ALL infrantry and artillary get the +D1 on attack. As long as all territorys that are next to bordered territory with fort should be able to attack. So France should get the defense bonus while being attacked from W Germany and Holland

    Hi,
first impression: cost is rather high to get a limited protection from some flanks.
I understand that giving all Inf and Art a +D1 is quite powerful, this explain the cost.
But if it is too high, then people will prefer to buy 2 Art units instead, for the 8 IPCs.
A cheaper and less powerful somehow can help selling the new unit.

Maybe 2 types of fortifications can simplify the border problems:
Sz fortifications (give a bonus vs any Amph. assault) and inland fortifications (give a bonus vs any invaders coming from any adjacent land territory).

To provide a defensive bonus to Inf and Art seems an accurate historical HR.

In essence, it makes them at the same level than a Tank unit at D3, but with no mobility.
The basic cost for this bonus is around 1 IPC/unit since Art cost 4 and Tank cost 6.
It can be halved since it cannot move and have no offensive value. 1 IPC/ 2 units, or (.5 IPC/unit).

Or it can be seen somehow as similar to Air Base and Naval Base because of the 8 IPCs cost.
Giving an inherent AA gun capacity, damage points and susceptible to TacBombing Raid and repair.
Can be captured, plus other bonus…

Just my two cents, for now.

For my part, I was thinking making it a HR for all Amph. assault.

But it can also be seen as restricted to heavily fortified territory.
We have probably Atlantic wall and Maginot Line in mind, here.

But what about Iwo Jima undercave fortification?

Do you also have this in mind, as an historical reference for this HR?

Was planning on placing forts in France, Germany, Gibraltar, Malta, Malaya

So, you was more thinking about something like Fort Eben-Emael:

Than the underground entrenchment in Iwo Jima?
