WE NEED AN ACTIVE LEAGUE MODERATOR!

  • '12

Commander Jennifer is very rarely online.  The G40 league is ON FIRE this year compared to last.  I believe last year there were around 40 games in the league and this year there are close to 200 already and it’s only beginning of April. In addition, the playoff structure is clearly outdated due to the gigantic increase in interest in the league.

I hereby put forward a petition to make Gamerman01 the acting moderator for the G40 league.  Here are the reasons:

    1.  No one is more knowledgeable about G40 rules aside from Krieghund that I am aware of.
    2.  Gamer is online nearly every day, often multiple times.
    3.  Gamer is a mainstay of this site for years.
    4.  Gamer already adds a lot of value to the league with his “rankings” thread, which gives players all kinds of information to help them pick the opponents they want.  This thread is generally updated DAILY if not multiple times a day, but Gamer.

Please consider this, feel free to add your comments, and let’s see if we can get some sort of consensus.  If someone wishes to throw their name into the hat or wished to nominate a different individual have at it.  I say let’s get this league the sort of moderator attention it needs and deserves.

    Cheers

Never had a problem with Cmd Jen, but she is definitely MIA.

Gamerman should be promoted to moderator, or co-moderator…

i have no problem with Jenn either.  She can remain the moderator emeritus.  but she’s obviously way too busy to moderate this league at the moment.

Is Cmdr Jen the only mod in charge of G40? I don’t know how the division of labor works on the league pages.

Either way, I would support promoting Gamerman given the points Bold already made.

  • '12

I should state, I am not certain gamer would want the job, I just think he is the man for the job.  As to whether he would accept and under what terms that would be for gamer to comment on.

  • For those of you that care……I submitted my below resignation, to all MODS and DJ, in the beginning of this year. I think it is time for some fresh blood to contribute…If you, the group, wants to elect someone, then you should probably write to DJ directly. JWW

    _Hello everyone,

First, I would like to thank each of you: Jenn, for getting me started here many years ago, I haven’t forgotten, Darth for losing a few games to me, probably just to make me feel good! But also for the time we spent working on improving the revised and 41 league. And of course David for creating this wonderful, sometime frustrating (dice) place.
I am writing to you because I feel, in the best interest of the League, that you appoint a new, secondary, or junior MOD for the league. It has been an honour to wear the badge and I hope I didn’t let anyone down during my time as MOD. I fully intend to continue to play here, support the site through my gold sponsorship and of course as Jenn did for me years ago, give a helping hand to any newbie that asks for help.
I know you will find an adequate, level headed replacement for me, not that I did all that much, but again I think a new election, or selection of a league MOD can energize and offer new ideas and thoughts to this growing community.
I really appreciate the trust you bestowed on me and I look forward to kicking all of your arses in the G40 league arena!!
    Thanks again, JWW_

  • I am interested in being G40 league moderator at least until Jennifer comes back, if there is a consensus from the players and/or someone in authority gives me that position.

She told me last week that she’s been moving.  Too bad she didn’t at least send a message to a fellow moderator to get a replacement while she’s gone…

    Dereliction of duty!

To add to Bold’s points, I have a keen sense of fairness and I enjoy working out disagreements between people (playing judge)
I am a financial statement auditor by trade, so also have a strong sense for impartiality
Oh, and I was 6th grade class president.

  • Thanks for sharing that post, JWW, but I’m wondering why you still have the moderator badge then?  Is Dave behind on things?

Boldfresh did send a PM to DJ much like the opening post of this thread - thanks for the advice

  • For what it’s worth, my vote’s for gamer as well!

Jenn’s fine, but Gamerman’s been doing it and doing a good job of it.

  • '18 '17 '16 '11 Moderator

For 4 months I was in the hospital without internet access.  It seems the league functioned just fine referring to the league rules as discussed and agreed upon as well as Krieghund’s FAQ thread(s).

Since my return I have been very active, I just have not been jamming rules and rulings down everyone’s throat.  I know there was a certain moderator who did that in past leagues and I never agreed with it.  Instead of becoming a reincarnation of what I call a “Rulez Natsi” I have gone the other way and allowed just about anything that has no violated the written rules of the game or league.

What I have done, on occasion, is speculate on what could occur in a game.  This is two fold.  1)  It brings to attention areas I feel are deficient in the current rules so we can discuss them in regards to next year’s league and 2)  It gives me a baseline to judge events that may occur, but have not yet occurred, for this year.

I am very sensitive about players declaring that I am acting unilaterally and arbitrarily.  If I know how people feel about something, I can take that into consideration later if the need arises.

Have there been changes to league after the league started?  Yes.
    A)  The community asked that the number of games allowed against the same opponent be increased.  This was, of course, granted as it was good for the league and I could see no exploit of allowing this to happen after the league had been going for months already.
    B)  The community asked that the number of contestants for the finals be increased.  Admittedly, it was hard to find 4 players last year that could do the finals and were somewhat close to qualifying for them, hence why we only had playoffs.  It was unclear at the time if we would have similar activity this year, so the rule was changed to two players originally.  Upon increased participation of the league and when the league requested a change be made, the change was made to increase the number of players.

In regards to specifics of the opening post:

    1.  Krieghund cheats.  He plays with the game creator. :P  Am I saying gamer is unversed in the rules?  No.  However, I have a copy of the rule book as well.  Unless you are attempting to say I have made rulings that violate the rules?  I don’t think I have, but if you have specific violations, feel free to point them out to me.

    2.  I am online every day.  I may do not post every day.  The site owner once told me that moderators are supposed to lurk in the background and not post a reply to every comment.  I feel that his message to me was “stop it girl, you don’t have to have an opinion on EVERYTHING” and you will notice, I do not engage nearly as much in GD as I used to. :P  I have specifically and religiously avoided commenting in game threads for that reason, though I randomly look through them.  (I do that mostly to make sure there’s good sportsmanship.  So far I have seen very little in the way of childish behavior and I think I only had to send one person a warning.)

    3.  Gamer is a mainstay.  Boldfresh is a mainstay.  Tcnance is a mainstay.  EM used to be a mainstay.  DM has not been seen in AGES as far as I know.  Not sure how this really impacts things.

    4.  Gamer is AWESOME and I have long considered him my unofficial assistant league moderator.  Last year his rankings were invaluable as a tool to ensure MY rankings were accurate because I had missed a couple of games that were reported in a separate thread.  (We did not have a reporting thread last year, a mistake I definitely fixed this year!)

And to add some of my own:

    5.  I have attempted to be fair in my rulings.  I have not yet heard of a conflict with my rulings, but I suspect if there were some, they were sent to Djensen and never forwarded to me. (Although I have seen nothing in my box from Djensen or in the hidden moderator only areas.)

    6.  I have raised issues I feel need to be discussed for next year.  For instance:
6a) should we have a 1 unit per territory limit?  There has never been such a rule in our leagues, only a limit on naval units.  However, this is a different game!
6b) should China be limited to what they can bid?  (consensus was yes and I don’t think that has changed.  It’s already handwritten on my rules sheet to put in for next year.)

    7.  It is, and I have always said this, my opinion that anything that is not specifically against the rules is something left to the two players to discuss BEFORE the game starts.  I have no problem with people who want to limit where bids can and cannot go, as long as they adhere to the minimum standards of the league as they are written now.  So if player A and player B agree that only infantry can be bid, that said infantry have to go in their home capitols, and no one can have more than 3 infantry bid (so England can have 3, Russia 3, etc) then so be it.  It is a ridiculous example, but it would pass the test of meeting the current rules and since both players agreed, then great, I hope you have fun playing!

After all, that is really the point, isn’t it?  To have fun playing the game.

(oh and for the record, if the two players agree the loser has to post a picture of himself (girls never lose!) kissing a frog on the forums, I would also enforce that.  No idea how to enforce it yet, but it would be a rule agreed upon by both players!)

  • Considering that you too are ‘unofficial’ according the this site, I don’t think it’s too much to ask that at the least yourself and Gamer be put on the same level as far as moderating league play. Here’s some of the reasons I would argue that the two of you should be co-moderators if not with Gamer as the head moderator.

    1. Gamer is pretty active and responds to questions as soon as he sees them. Notice the time between MM’s question and Gamer’s response, less than FIVE MINUTES! This can only help the league players.

    2. Two active moderators ensures better coverage of the league, especially when life rears it’s head.

    3. Gamer maintains league standings and compiles statistics that are constantly updated as game results are reported, ensuring league players know where they stand at any point.

    4. Gamer has compiled and updates a list of known triplea problems and works to ensure the triplea developers are aware of these problems.

    5. Gamer is known and respected by the league players. Many players have joined the league since the start of the year. They’ve seen him throughout while you are still a somewhat unknown figure for many of the players.

    6. Gamer is a top notch Global player and is intimately familiar and experienced with playing the latest edition. This gives him a better understanding of what rules might be needed and how new rules might impact league play.

Seth, are you a writer?  very well stated.

Jenn, do you agree it is a good idea to make gamer the lead moderator with you as his co-chair?  I think it would be best for all in the league.

    Cheers

  • Nope, just put some thought into it.

    And I forgot one

    7. Gamerman01 is a rules deputy and is very capable of making rulings regarding what is and isn’t allowed according to the rules. He also tries to educate the community on sometimes little known rules to better our gaming experience. And no, he has never once to my knowledge acted as a rule nazi and is very fair in this area.

  • '18 '17 '16 '11 Moderator

    A)  I am an officially appointed moderator.  I take a little offense to being called unofficial.  My name isn’t listed as a moderator for a specific board and David has never put my name as a specific board moderator, he said I was a global moderator. Notice that IL was not listed either, Dezrtfish has been gone for ages and he’s listed.  The forums have just never had that section updated and I don’t think it ever will be.

    B)  Originally DM was asked to be moderator for AAG40 and he adamantly refused.  He was busy with the anniversary league and now appears to be completely gone. (I understand while I was in the hospital some hussy snagged him to be her husband.  :P  )  So it sort of fell on me by default.

    C)  I feel, unless David says otherwise, that at this point in time life is fine as is with Gamerman in the 2nd seat but acting as my equal and me in the 1st seat (because I am the only one with any moderator powers at all) and seeking his council as my equal in all but name.
