Cape Matapan was a big naval engagement between Regina Maria and the Royal Navy. Coach, your line up for the USN just got better.
I wondered why for years Avlon Hill never went for the Essex class seeing over 24 ea where built and used and several are sitting around as Naval memorials. Keep up the excellent work. Question, your B-29 Superfortress is it going to be a 1-700 scale model? I have 4 of them and they look nice but are massive looking on the AA boards. I like the idea of the Alaska Battle Cruiser and the Buckley Destroyer Escort. Subs and Cruiser Forces will be hard pressed in the future.

RE: United States Set from Historical Board Gaming!
Tall Paul and Coach, excellent idea, I would truly enjoy an AA Naval only game, Might leave in Islands that you must capture using our new Marines for attack and defense air and naval bases. Ships normally do not control a sea port or air base you have to have a small land force to maintain it. This is where the Marines can come into play in a big way. If Coach develops landing craft you need the proper forces to use them. THE USMC.

RE: United States Set from Historical Board Gaming!
Coach, I am in for pre-orders. Excellent choice of a stand alone USN fleet. May I suggest a Baltimore Class heavy Cruiser and a Birmingham Class Light or Atlanta Class. Otherwise excellent potential line up. My Marines arrived today, but I can’t check them out until I get back from ND. I am sure that they are a high quality product. Bring on a USN line up you have my support. :-D :-D :-D

Another AA piece junkie, excellent. Coach mine was a suggestion, Montana Class will be an excellent choice for taking on the IJN Yamato Class Do what you plan to do and expect lots of sales of these custom sets in the future. Question are you eventually going to sell pieces from your custom sets or are you just going to sell them in the sets?

RE: United States Set from Historical Board Gaming!
Hey Coach, received notice my Marines are on the way to Enid, thank you. IDEA: :-D :-D :-D Question have you considered for additional USN ships in the future doing the Washington Class 9 x 16 inch guns 2 ships, The Colorado Class 8 x 16 inch guns 3 ships, Idaho Class 12 x 14 inch guns 3 ships and last but not least the New York Class 12 x 14 inch ie USS Texas only WWI Dreadnought still intact berthed at Laporte, Texas 2 ships, or the BB Arkansas 12 x 12 inch guns 2 ships. Then we would have every USN class of battleship that was engaged in WWII.

RE: Axis&Allies 1936: the World at War (WAW)
Leave the Rangers in the game if only for this historical prespective:
Pointe du Hoc.the Germans had built, as part of the Atlantic Wall, six casemates to house a battery of captured French 155mm guns. With Pointe Du Hoc situated between Utah Beach to the west and Omaha Beach to the east, these guns threatened Allied landings on both beaches, risking heavy casualties in the landing forces. Although there were several bombardments from the air and by naval guns, intelligence reports assumed that the fortifications were too strong, and would also require attack by ground forces. The U.S. 2nd Ranger Battalion was therefore given the task of destroying the strongpoint early on D-Day.Prior to the attack, the guns were moved approximately 1 mile away; however, the concrete fortifications were intact, and would still present a major threat to the landings if they were occupied by artillery forward observers. The Ranger Battalion commanders and executive officers knew the guns had moved, but the rest of the Rangers were not informed prior to the attack. The Ranger battalion was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James Earl Rudder. The plan called for the three companies of Rangers to be landed by sea at the foot of the cliffs, scale them using ropes, ladders, and grapples under enemy fire, and engage the enemy at the top of the cliff. This was to be carried out before the main landings. The Rangers trained for the cliff assault on the Isle of Wight, under the direction of British Commandos. The costliest part of the battle for the Rangers came after the cliff assault. Determined to hold the vital ground, yet isolated from other Allied forces and outnumbered by the German garrison on the point, the Rangers fended off several counterattacks from the German 916th Grenadier-Regiment. Rudder’s men were finally relieved after units of the American 29th Infantry Division’s 116th Infantry Regiment broke through to the Rangers from Omaha Beach on June 7.
The original plans had also called for an additional, larger Ranger force of eight companies to follow the first attack, if successful. Flares from the cliff tops were to signal this second wave to join the attack, but because of the delayed landing, the signal came too late, and the other Rangers, mostly of the U.S. 5th Ranger Battalion, landed on Omaha instead of Pointe du Hoc. The added impetus these 500+ Rangers provided on the stalled Omaha Beach landing has been conjectured to have averted a disastrous failure there, since they carried the assault beyond the beach, into the overlooking bluffs and outflanked the German defenses. At the end of the 2-day action, the initial Ranger landing force of 225+ was reduced to about 90 men who could still fight. One of the battleships which helped the battalion was the USS Texas (BB-35). In the aftermath of the battle, some Rangers became convinced that French civilians had taken part in the fighting on the German side. A number of French civilians accused of shooting at American forces or of serving as artillery observers for the Germans were executed.

FMG, is the US Bomber sculpt a B-24 Liberator Heavy Bomber? If it is that is totally awesome. :-D :-D
-
RE: Just for Fun: The Ultimate A&A
Add the A-Bomb ability to the main 5 nations. USA, Germany, UK, USSR and Japan. Anyone remember that the Germans had the first heavy water plant a key step in making the A-Bomb. Now some rules. If you drop one it cost you 50 IPCs.
Purchase a A-Bomb will cost 25 IPCs. Neither you or the enemy can occupy the land for two whole turns afterwards.
Dice throw 2 x 6 dice 6 thru 12 a direct hit, everything on the territory is destroyed, 6 to 1 a dud bomb. Costs for a A-bomb must be high to prevent MAD Mutual Assured Destruction. German’s have a launch and delivery platform if they develop the V-2 Rocket. Everyone else must have Heavy Bombers for a delivery platform. A bomber carrying a A-bomb can be attacked and destroyed fairly easy, so I suggest a fighter escort is a must. -
RE: Re: Field Marshal Games Pieces Project Discussion thread
FMG, I see a lot of destroyed Axis aircraft, tanks and ships in the future on AA game boards with your new USA aircraft. IJN look out here comes the USN Avenger torpedo bombers. Your detail is superb. Cheers

RE: HBG sculpts for U.S. set
IL, I looked up the specs of the ME-264, it is impressive. It looks like a real good canidate for a Luftwaffe Heavy Bomber.

Flames of War Operation Bagration
Has anybody looked at the Flames of War board game minatures included in Operation Bagration and A Bridge Too Far?
They have King Tigers, FW-190s, Panthers, UK 5.5 Howitzers, Shermans and SDK 251 halftracks, T-34s and several more. The scale looks compatiable to AA units. If these are compatiable it is another possible avenue for extra playing units. -
RE: HBG sculpts for U.S. set
Hey guys, do we need a new thread for this discussion on Heavy Bombers?
-
RE: HBG sculpts for U.S. set
Coach, May I suggest for your Luftwaffe Heavy Bomber the Fock Wolf FW 200 Condor. It was a 4 engine bomber, Long Range Recon and some even used as transports. It was a big plane almost the size B-17 or the B-24.
Second suggestion: The only purpose built Strategic German Heavy Bomber was Henikel HE-177/HE-274 GREIF, Drawback, this aircraft was only a two engine plane. Carried two tons of bombs up to a 1000 miles. It was designed to do 60 degree dive bombing runs as well. Luftwaffe crews nicknamed it the FLYING COFFIN. To many of them had engine fires. Real good color pictures top/side views can be found at WINGS PALETTE. http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww2/b/1037 :-D :-D :-D :-D
