Most likely to Gencon. I’ve never been to Origins before.
However, if I do go to Gencon, it’ll be more for the fantasy elements than Axis and Allies.

Yes, that was very helpful. Thanks Darth Jen.
Now I understand that low luck isn’t for me. :-D -
RE: A New Bidding System
I think you wrote the answer wrong for the poll. Shouldn’t it be:
" No, in favor of the Axis"
and
“Yes, it’s balanced”
Yes, I stand corrected.
My suggestion is to try to play the game with NO’s and closing the Dardanelles.
Keeping the Axis out of the eastern med can have a big effect on the eastern european theatre. Playing under these two optional rules may not require a bid or a very minimal one.Even though these rules were suggested by Larry Harris himself, I don’t think players treat them equally as canon compared to Tech or NOs. In fact, Larry himself admitted these two optional rules weren’t play tested sufficiently. However, the two new rules (in particular the closing of the Dardenelles) do constitute a “bid” for the Allies.
The point of this thread isn’t to say quantitatively how much of an bid the Axis/Allies should received (ie 2 IPC, 5 IPC bid, etc), but to get players to think outside of the box and see what constitutes a bid and how much it effects gameplay variety.
For example, the closing of the Dardenelles might balance the game, but I think it stifles creativity by limiting what options Italy/Germany can pursue in the Mediterranean.

RE: Re: Field Marshal Games Pieces Project Discussion thread
Great idea! I’m 100% behind this project! :-D :-D
I want at least one set (~$60) for me – possibly more as stocking stuffers.
I wouldn’t mind preordering either as long as we have a safe, legal system in which to do it.
I know FMG is honest, but sometimes orders get lost/misplaced and people forget. ;)3 Task Force Markers (Like Pacific)
For the unenlightened, what are Task Force Markers?

A New Bidding System
This thread is for those of us who believe 1941 with NOs is NOT a balanced game. This thread already assumes imbalance in the 1941 scenario and moreover, seeks to remedy it. This is not a slight against Larry Harris or the other game designers. The original A&A had an extreme Allied bias, yet is still regarded as a classic today (albeit with a few changes). We hope to do the same with A&A:50.
That being said, what what type of “Handicap” would you like to see introduced to the game? If the game is imbalanced, how would you fix it? Would you stick to the traditional bidding system or try something else?
All constructive comments will be rewarded.

RE: Lack of German naval strat: problem or not?
I don’t agree and I think it will show in the tournament. People are starting to learn how to play the Allies and in the end I think the balance will be close to 50/50.
I hope I’m the one who’s wrong, but looking at the situation as a realist, the Axis earn too much money with NOs that starting rounds 3-4, they’re already outpacing what the Allies are making. This completely throws off the balance of the game.

RE: After Action Reports
Classic was ridiculously in favor of the ALlies – it wasn’t even close after Russia moved. Even after Russia got restricted, the Allies were still at a supreme advantage. But you’re right:
(imbalance) Revised < Anniversary < Classic

RE: Lack of German naval strat: problem or not?
But whoever said that subs don’t get you IPC’s are wrong. If they didn’t who would ever buy them? And in all the games I’ve played, they’re the single most used naval unit.
I did. So in your strategy how many German subs do you end up buying? How effective did you find them? How many times did you rather wish you had purchased fighters/bombers? And like you said, no theory, actual game results.
Though if we’re talking about 1941 with NOs, the Axis seem at such an advantage anyways that whether or not Germany buys subs may not have that great of an effect on the game. The net result is still be the same, i.e. a Axis victory.

RE: After Action Reports
I’m edging closer and closer to the latter.
After five months I think it’s time we had a look into a bidding system.

RE: After Action Reports
Okay. I had a chance to update.
The last two games should be up now. :-D

RE: Movies to watch while playing AA
Das Boot.
Easily. Creates a great gaming atmosphere. It’s dull and monotonous enough that it seeps into the background as random noise and chatter. There’s also no monotone narrative to listen to (which is what you want to avoid). U
Unlike other war films, which are distracting, this movie isn’t filled with explosions and shootouts. The movie is long enough (I use the 5 hour director’s cut edition) that it can be played during a game of A&A without looping. Most of all it’s in German, which again, sets the mood.
Sometimes I just use the opening screen for Medal of Honor – that works well too.
I’ll also nominate Downfall, for similar reasons as Das Boot. Plus a lot of it takes place in a war room.

RE: Lack of German naval strat: problem or not?
Aside from Cairo not being a VC, this is my biggest disappointment with the game. I for one will never build ships for Germany – which is a shame, because the idea of recreating convoys and wolfpacks is rather cool I think.
However three things preclude this:
1. No starting IC in France.
2. Atlantic too small (not enough sea zones)
3. U-Boats don’t deal economic damage.
Until these ideas are implemented we will NEVER see a A&A game that features a German naval presence.

Isn’t Chrono Trigger downloadable content from the Wii Market?

RE: Is there somewhere you can buy more plastic pieces?
Good effort.
Personally, I would rather coat my barbs with honey than vinegar.
I’m busy at the moment, but if this thread is still alive in two weeks, I’ll use this draft is the basis of my own letter to Wizards.Though, while I’m at, are you guys really running out of pieces or scared of running out of pieces? There’s a difference between “Shoot, I’m out of Japanese infantry!” and “Crap, I only have two more Japanese planes left – someone needs to do something.” Also some people like pieces instead of chips – for example, 2 planes on an carrier instead of 1 plane + 1 chip. It makes a difference.
For me it’s more of the latter because I try to consolidate my pieces as much as possible (forces are more powerful when grouped together), instead of having them scattered across the board. Granted there’s an exception to every rule and there always a game where Italy grows to insane proportions. But even in the long, protracted games where Japan is abnormally large, I still haven’t found myself running out of pieces.
So is it really worth it?

RE: Is there somewhere you can buy more plastic pieces?
Why does the burden of truth have to lie with Bardoly? He’s not the one clamoring for new pieces. It just seems like you’re passing the buck off to him because you’re too lazy to write one yourself. At least make it a joint effort.
I agree with Bardoly. In this electronic age a formal letter has more weight than an e-mail or a phone call to the customer service department. A “real” letter has the best chance of reaching people who are in a position to do something.
I would write one myself, but my quarrel is not with the number of pieces but with the quality of pieces themselves. And for that I rather have FMG.

RE: Is there somewhere you can buy more plastic pieces?
But the honesty and fairness must start somewhere. Honesty and fairness breeds honesty and fairness. You can’t expect to cheat others so that they will treat you fairly. As a former long-time employee of a very large retailer, I have to say that from a company’s point of view 1 well-written letter from a customer will make MUCH MORE of an impact on corporate policy than 100 cheats. I’ve read a lot of complaining on this website, but I would be surprised if more than 1-2% of the people who are complaining so much have ever written a well thought-out letter to Hasbro, WOTC, OR Avalon Hill explaining their concerns(not just gripes).
Finally a voice of reason. Good job Bardoly.
PS: Don’t post anymore. You have the number of the beast. ;)

RE: After Action Reports
@TG Moses: We are from Portland OR, every other Friday we have 3 games going simultaneously. USA built a large force to contain and then invade Italy, I agree. Perhaps you are right, maybe we waited too long to sink the Italian fleet, USA turn in Round 4. Perhaps sinking the Italian fleet is best done by UK on Turn 3 or even Turn 2. At any rate, the economics of the Axis overwhelmed us, even though we took Italy and held it for a couple of turns. By the way, the USA invasion force of Italy was 12 fully loaded transports, plus air power.
Again, I’m no expert at the game. And I definitely don’t have 50 games below my belt. But 12 fully loaded transports seems excessive, not to mention the tempo lost and IPCs spent going into so many transports. I really think a Africa first - France later strategy would work here. And yes, the Italian fleet must be dealt with as soon as possible – even if board position has to be sacrificed to achieve it.
Observations/Recommendations:
Over 7 turns, the axis accumulated +143 IPC more than the Allies - probably not a balanced scenario with the NO’s with teams of equal skill.Excellent. This isn’t conjecture or guesswork, but an observation supported by THE FACTS.

RE: After Action Reports
I can honestly say, and most readers would agree with me, that’s the best AA Report I’ve read yet!
I digging the skill level of your players. I wish I had a gaming group 40 players strong. Where are you from again?Japan and Germany looked like monsters throughout the game. My recommendations:
Try focusing less on KIF (Kill Italy First) and more on CIF (Contain Italy First). Invading Italy proper seems like a logistical nightmare. How about pushing Italy off of Africa and then concentrating on France - where the REAL IPCs are at. Or perhaps bailing out Russia. Would this be more logical. Or is the tempo surrendered from switching fronts (Africa to Northern Europe) too much?

RE: The Real War
Axis and Allies is not meant as a real wargame. Quit trying to ruin it for the rest of us. Thank you.

RE: Plastic Playing Pieces
Honestly, I would just go with what Wizards has given us. Never did I find myself running out of plastic pieces. Perhaps the only exception would be Italy’s woeful lack of cruisers, but even then, that wasn’t too much of an issue. In fact - I hope someone doesn’t stomp me for saying this - but in some areas Wizards gives us too many pieces. Examples would be Germany and Russia’s navy. ;)
So yeah, give Italy a few cruisers and I’m good to go. :-D
