      @Brain:

      The book is always better than the movie.

      99.9% true… the only one I have found where the movie is better than the book is I Am Legend. The book just didn’t have that ‘all alone’ feeling being that the mutated people could speak and act “more human”>

    • RE: Will North Korea launch nuclear missiles towards the U.S.A

      First: didn’t read all the posts.

      Second: If NK has the capability to nuke us… then they would have the capability to nuke anyone at any time. With that thought, they should fear to nuke us… for they know the repercussions they would receive from the rest of the nations.

      It’s the same reason why we wouldn’t nuke them…

      Nuclear weapons are a leverage tool for whole nations. It is terrorists whom we should fear… not a communist nation. I believe that NK’s leadership would only use nukes in an ‘scorched earth’ strategy… sort of like a self destruct plan of action if we were to invade. Think about it. This is a nation where its people are being held hostage… just ask their relatives in the South.

      I too am a fan of this series and yes, I have read all eleven… I am going to try not to be skeptical since Jordan is dead but I seriously doubt his predecessor will botch a good series. The 27th you say? Nice.

    • RE: Nightlife in your town.

      Raider tickets are easy to come by, yes. 😄

      Jermo, I’m not big on the club thing either… However, I was just making the statement, that the younger crowd in this area (Napa) have such a lack of activity (you can only go wine tasting so many times  :roll:).

      In Oakland, granted it’s a much bigger city, there are shows, local hang outs, and a whole slew of nightlife. Now, I probably wouldn’t of mentioned Napa, and thought sure, this is a smaller sized community that can only offer so much. Yet, even the locals believe that “so much” is next to nothing… and since moving here, I can’t help but agree with them.

    • Nightlife in your town.

      A couple of years ago, I moved away from my apartment in West Oakland and into the ‘wine country’ of Napa. The area is beautiful, serene, and…… BORING!  :roll: Napa is the kind of place that caters to the tourist… and for good reason, since besides the obvious of capitalizing on wine, they’ve been constructing high end hotels and condos all over downtown. That’s not mentioning all the pricey restaurants and $300k condos. They cater to the tourist so much that they forget about the humble residents who live and work in the area.

      Meaning… there is nothing to do out here. A couple of bars, tucked away in no-mans-land corners of town… no nightclubs… permits for live music are hard to get… and the venues for performing even harder.

      Now, despite how others picture Oakland… and yeah, it is pretty ghetto since I have lived there for many years… I miss the place.  :mrgreen:

      This wine country is a sham. 10 to 15 dollar drinks in a place without a beating heart. There was an article in the local paper today which speaks of exactly what I am writing about here.

      So… what about your town? Do you live in an area thriving with culture and good entertainment? Or do you live in a Napa of your own?

      @Imperious:

      hes flying in… i think its better to take public transit. The one ways are so ridiculous sometimes that you need to travel a dozen blocks before you can make a turn, then you have to backtrack. I don’t travel alone, but if i did thats what i would do.

      They have a subway but unfortunately its seedy and you can get robbed in daylight.

      BART isn’t so bad. They recently extended it right up to the airport.

      Stay at the ‘W’.
      Yes, that is the name. W Hotel.

      It is right next to the Convention Center. Excellent rooms with designer furniture, plush bathrobes, high thread count designer sheets, great food service at the bottom and reasonably priced. Has good viewing, especially if you reside on the side facing the bay bridge.

      Hotels close to the wharf… I’m not too sure about. However, the area of North Beach (aka Italy town) which is close by to the wharf, has some of the best restaurants in town.

      When staying in SF, I recommend staying as close to the Conv. Center as possible and don’t drive anywhere. Parking is the worst out of any city I have ever been too. Public transportation is the best way.

    • RE: Cooking

      @Jermofoot:

      !

      Let me tell you one simple recipe that seems very ghetto, but I have a guilty pleasure for it.

      Take a casserole pan.  Brown some ground beef and layer it on the bottom.  Then add a layer of grated cheese…cheddar works well but use whatever you like.  Then top it off with a legion of tater tots.  Bake that until the tots are cooked.  Then eat the hell out of it.

      That looks like something I could easily do.

      And yeah, it would be a ghetto delight. Very tasty!

      You’re exactly right, Jermo. I started it simple with stove top pans and crock pots. Then got into working on proper oven temps, timing, and like Jen said, throwin in what smells good.

    • Cooking

      Now that money is tight for many… the idea of eating out is becoming less and less popular. So, I have taken upon myself to get into cooking.

      A list of things I have been making.

      a broccoli and sprout casserole topped with muenster cheese.
      cinnamon fried tomatoes
      slow cooked eggs with hollandaise
      Porkchops with peach and onion chutney
      homemade chili
      a chicken butternut squash stew
      a tuna salad with celery, green grapes and roasted almonds

      I’ve been learning quickly. I am retarded when it comes to recipes so alot of it is guesstimating and off the cuff.

    • RE: Fun Times - LEGAL ISSUE ONLY

      @Cmdr:

      The news that Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) has been taken into custody on charges of seeking bribes in exchange for an appointment to the Senate (among other allegations) fundamentally reshapes the Illinois political landscape.

      http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/2008/12/blagojevich_arrested_a_fundame.html

      UNDATED - News that Gov. Rod Blagojevich is facing federal corruption charges is drawing reaction across Illinois ranging from surprise to sadness and even elation.

      Authorities allege the {Governor} was intercepted on court-authorized wiretaps recently plotting to sell or trade Illinois’ vacant U.S. Senate seat for personal benefits for himself and his wife.

      http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ap-il-blagojevich-reax,0,3432193.story

      From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
      The breaking news from the Chicago Tribune: “A source said today that Gov. Rod Blagojevich was taken into federal custody at his North Side home this morning.” More: “U.S. attorney’s office spokesman Randall Samborn said both Blagojevich and his chief of staff John Harris were arrested today.”

      The charge, per the AP: Federal authorities “accused him of attempting to benefit financially from his position to appoint Barack Obama’s Senate replacement.” Wow.

      http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/12/09/1703895.aspx

      The above should be plenty of sources for the source-nazi’s in out midst.

      So the question is:

      Is it illegal to sell an appointment to the highest bidder?  Or is it just unethical and immoral?  Seriously asking because I’d like to know if he actually broke the law or what’s happening.  Seems to me that Illinois can’t seem to get a governor to stick around for a full term in office if they have the “testicular fortitude” to stand up to Richard Daley.

      Yeah it’s unethical.
      Yeah it’s immoral.
      And yeah, I pretty sure it’s illegal.
