If you do not attempt sea-lion then Germany should not buy a carrier or pretty much any other surface warship except maybe a destroyer. An air base is the way to protect any vulnurable transports. Though I think one in Norway (if you can hold norway) is a better spot than one in Germany.

Sea-Lion
Pros: You remove one enemy early.
Cons: The Soviet Union becomes to powerful.

RE: American Pac-Strat: Why Alpha +2 is not a balanced game!
Whether you like sea-lion or not Germany has to focus on england for the first 2-3 turns at the very least. Germany has to eliminate most of the British navy the very first turn. If you keep the threat of a strong sea-lion you can force England into putting most of their cash for the first couple turns into defending their capitol. If you dont do sea lion you can then build a sub or two a turn combined with half of the German airforce and you can keep the British from invading Europe and possible damage Englands economy with convoy warefare. While you are keeping England from gaining any real strength you have a major land war going with the Soviets.

RE: Russia is too strong in Alpha 2+
Jennifer is very, very right! Russia is not too strong! Just because you cant take Moscow in a couple turns like you could in the previous version does not mean its too strong. Germany will eventually take Moscow if no other power comes to its rescue. The key is dispatching Russia before the Allies defeat Japan or gain enough strength to make a invasion in western Europe.
For all of you having difficulty dealing with Russia
As Germany build a lot of infantry and artillery for the first 4-6 rounds. As Jennifer said you can use the Italians to place your air craft on the front. Use this to push your way into Russia. Turn 5 or 6 or later buy mechs and tanks to catch up to the front in time for the assault on Moscow. Feint Sea-lion and use those transports to make a two pronged attack. The larger force should go to the South and pretty much all of the mechs and tanks should go south. The main idea is to cut the Soviet supply of cash. Attempt to disable their buying power early. Use the transports and a small land based army coming from the south to take Novogrod early. Then use this factory to create are fair sized northern army. It will then push towards Moscow. The main purpose of this army is to keep Soviet troops pinned down protecting Moscow while your other army takes all of the IPC territory in the south. Position your aircraft so that it can support and protect both armies if the need arises.PS The U.S. is too strong unless it splits its income between the two theaters.

RE: My Axis Strategy
With this strategy it would seem like all three Axis would be in a titanic powere struggle with the U.S. Trust me the U.S. will have enough power to keep the three Axis tied up in North America while the other allies (Soviet Union, India, and ANZAC) cripple, disable, then behead the Axis powers.

German Fleet
As Germany how wise is it to build anything for the German Baltic fleet except subs?
Assume that Germany builds transports the first couple of turns to feint sea-lion then uses those transports and the german fleet for bombarding the Soviet Union in later rounds. Other than subs to annoy and possible cripple the U.K. economy, what good does building any surface war ship for germany do? It cant hope to compete for naval supperiority if it has any half decent plans to take Moscow.

RE: Soviet Union Strategy
Jennifer: You have had some very good points. I really like your ratios of infantry, artillery, and tanks. A unprepared German player would get slaughtered by the pressure points the 1-1 Russian - German tank ratio could cause.
Stalingradski is right about the Mech inf. They can be very useful if paired up with tanks in the right places. I especially find them usefull for Germany against the soviet union. With itally clearing any screaning russian inf on the front lines a large force of Mech, tanks and air support could sieze valuable territory from the Soviets and through them of balance forcing them to cover up and attempt to contian the blitz. The mechs protect the precious german tanks from damage. At the very least the mechs keep the options open for germany to switch from pressure on one front to pressure on a totally different one. Plus they keep the red army on its toes, attempting to cover every possible angle. (which often they over look something, sometime)I have also found them useful for the japanese supporting and protecting blitzing tanks in china and russia.

Sea Lion
Assuming Germany spends all of its money to pull it off and England spends all of its money to repel the germans what are the chances of Sea Lion being successful by turn 4?

RE: Soviet Union Strategy
Infantry only wont work. Unless Russia has the U.S. putting some major ipc’s into the Atlantic it has to be far more creative to survive.
-
RE: Soviet Union Strategy
I dont see how Russia can keep a fleet alive in the black sea? Any dedicated attack from the German airforce would eleminate it, unless you spend vast amounts of ipc’s

RE: Russia is too strong in Alpha 2+
The battle on the eastern front is not a quick easy win. If it was easy the Axis would win every time. Like the rest of the game you have to out think your oppenent to achieve victory. You have to hit them where they do not expect and you have to be careful to protect your front.
I have had little difficulty cracking the red army shell. You have to be careful and calculated. The few times I have not taken moscow was due to either mistakes or bad luck. Russia is not too strong but strong enough that victory is not assured and you actually have out-play the russians to take moscow just like they have to out-play you to keep you from taking moscow.

RE: Russia Turn 2
If the German player is smart and expierenced and chooses not to go for a full out Sea-Lion then the only thing Russia can do is defend, threaten the counter attack, and as slowly as possible fall back to Moscow to await slaughtering by the German airforce and tanks.
If however the German player has less experience than you, or you have found a gap in his front/strategy take full advantage of it. Now if the German is careful and calculated their will be none of these “gaps” and you shall have to resort to trading space for time and hoping your allies help you before Moscow falls. If you managed to develope a strategy that was both brilliant and unexpected, with a little luck (or the lack of bad luck) you could turn the tables on the Third Reiche

Soviet Union Strategy
In pretty much every AAG game all the USSR does is buy infantry, retreat, and get slaughtered in the end at Moscow. If the Soviet Union pulled a brilliant and/or unexpected move on Germany, it could decide the game.
Any Ideas?

RE: Russian Defence
Germany is far stronger than USSR to start off. Russias only hope is to stock up on infantry and avoid directly confronting any major German force. For Russia mechs and tanks are useful because if placed right they can attack anywhere on the German front. This can help Russia to delay Germany until it has the strength or the help to go on the offensive.
