@superbattleshipyamato Honestly, you’d be better off looking the different Global Wars up on YouTube. Lots of great channels out there, and tons of comprehensive videos.

RE: House Rules?
@dsumner I think these are great ideas, but I do think the +2 with combined arms is a bit much when you take into consideration Next Gen MBTs and Next Gen Fighters. They’d be attacking at a 10. I won’t knock it till I try it, because getting the Next Gens isn’t a guarantee each game.

RE: House Rules?
@dsumner I’ve got a rough idea for Cruisers. Following modern day, since the difference between the Cruisers in Russias and the USN are almost negligible compared to the contemporary DDGs, I have CGs a cost of 17, with the same 8 Attack/Defense of the DDG. They still only launch 1 Cruise missile, but they have and AA ability where they can shoot at Aircraft at a 2 (Following regular A&A rules for anti air) and they can attempt to intercept a Cruise missile (assuming a hit is scored) at a 2.
For Bombers, I followed the Strat bombers of 1936. They can bomb bases, using 3 d12. They hit on a 4 (follow 2025 rules for Base strikes). They can also perform a Carpet Bomb using the same 3 d12 at 4. The Carpet Bomb functions just like a Surgical Strike (but no halving the dice values)

RE: House Rules?
@dsumner I certainly will. I finished the playtest, and it certainly needs more work. I’ve got to adjust the setups somewhat, and figure out how to ramp up economy over time (just like in 1936). The West won in 4 rounds, and with authority too. They would have had 7 or 8 (technically) victory cities. The biggest factor is that since Ukraine is a victory city, and starts as a neutral (a very heavily armed neutral at that) the East start with a -1 VP.
While Russia did take Ukraine in one attack, it left her beat up, too much to where she was able to push into Germany. In fact, the East was forced to try Nukes to even things out, which backfired and gave the West an even larger advantage.
Adding new units goes seamlessly, fortunately, so I’m looking forward to trying out your additions. I’ve also got many of my own (mostly naval). The greater challenge is going to be giving the East the ability to win conventionally. I love the nukes, they add a lot of randomness and moments of WOW! However, winning with your forces is much more satisfying. I’ll post a revised setup hopefully tomorrow (5/30) that will include new units.

RE: House Rules?
@dsumner I’ll be doing the first playtest tomorrow. It’s similar to 1936, in that Ukraine-Russian war is the Spanich civil war (except only NATO is pending troops), and Russia has to also (try) to gobble up Scandinavia, the Baltics, and Panama (through Venezuela) before they join NATO
-
RE: House Rules?
This isn’t just a house rule, so much as taking the game to a different level. Ever since playing 1936, I’ve fallen in love with pre-war scenarios, so I’m working on a January 2022 start date, with Ukraine as a neutral (on the nose, I’m aware) and many other additions to the other neutrals. The basic premise is that Russia is trying to capture as much territory as it can before nations join NATO

RE: A question on battleship etiquette when assigning damage
Whenever there would only be 1 possible hit from a defending unit/ship that’s been hit by the attacker, we don’t even bother rolling because we all do now it’s going on the BB. Not at all bad form. I’d think you’re crazy if you didn’t.

My pleasure. By the way, I wrote “acrylic” above but I’ve double-checked and the correct term is actually acetate sheets, a.k.a. projector transparencies; see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transparency_(projection).
Thanks for letting me know. They’d probably give me a weird look if I asked for acrylic. 😆😆

Your best option might be to use a simple graphics program like Paint to create either a single large picture or several smaller pictures (depending on whether or not you’ll need to make multiple printouts) consisting of the required interprovincial borderlines and the required names on a clear background. Print out draft versions on plain paper as you experiment with the pictures until you get the sizes and positions exactly right to fit on your map board. Once you’re satisfied, take the files to a local printing/photocopy place and ask them to print the picture (or pictures) on sheets of thin clear acrylic, i.e. the type used for old-fashioned overhead projector transparencies. These can be overlayed on your map and held in place by transparent sticky tape. It should look fairly professional, and it won’t affect the actual map so you can always change it back later if you wish.
Sounds like something I should be able to do. Thank you!

Physically modifying 1942 2nd edition map.
I have just received my Canadian roundels from HBG and I want to cut up Canada into its respective 1940 territories. I don’t have access to any printing machine that could print a map. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to modify the map so that it looks reasonably professional?

[Anniversary] French and ANZAC additions.
I’ve made some additions to the Anniversary. Not wanting to spend $200 plus on getting the whole 1940 Global, I bought all I would need to make the Anniversary a mini Global. I bought French and ANZAC pieces, and Naval and Air bases. I also devised a unique way that the French and ANZAC get their forces. I took a page out of Chinas playbook and modified it. Because the French and Aussies are larger powers than China, I gave them ICs, And all the goodies they would get in Global '40, except IPCs. They get their troops and vehicles like so: They may choose TWO of the three unit types (Naval, Air and Land) and build one unit for each. To prevent mass build up of Aircraft, Battleships, Carries and Cruisers, the French and ANZAC are limited to the physical models of they units listed. Destroyers, Subs and Transports can be mass produced. This has not yet been playtested, but will be soon.
What do y’all think? It’s innovative, but do you think It’ll work?
Moderator’s edit: Added tag [Anniversary] to title.

RE: Painting Custom ANZAC and French units.
@Nowhere:
I’m going to take spare Russian units for the French, and Spare UK units for the ANZAC. I’m also going to either purchase their respective controls markers on eBay, or paint some simple ones on the backs of extras I have.
Is this a good idea, or shoud I give in and purchase the '40s?
If you just want to do slight modifications to Anniversary and don’t want to spend big bucks on 1940 (I’m assuming beyond the cash issue, it’s also a time/rules issue? You don’t want to actually play 1940, you’d rather just modify the smaller Anniversary?), I’d recommend just buying the French and ANZAC UNITS from 1940 off of Historical Board Gaming’s website. If you just want French and Aussie units, this would be the far more cost-effective and hassle-free way of doing it.
If you actually WANT to play 1940, I disagree with the printing of the map suggestion if money is an issue, because having a good-sized map of Global printed is going to cost you almost as much as buying the games themselves (without getting all the units that come with it)… while the printed maps ARE superior to what you get out of the box, printing maps is never about saving money, its about getting a better map. If you really want to play 1940, just buy 1940… you’ll get everything you need and you’ll be supporting the company that made it (and might offer more in the future if supported for their work).
If you’re just looking to expand Anniversary to include France and ANZAC, just buy the 1940 units for those two countries from HBG. That’s my opinion (right or wrong).
I’ll look into purchasing the units off their site. Thank you.

RE: Painting Custom ANZAC and French units.
Why don’t you download a custom map of Global from here instead of using Anniversary board? The custom maps are much better than the boards and they will have the air bases and naval bases printed on them. Otherwise you will be stuck finding chits as well for the bases aside from your quest for roundels. If you live in North America I’ll mail you my roundels for free since I’m using custom roundels now.
I do live in North America! That would be awsome!

RE: Painting Custom ANZAC and French units.
@CWO:
It depends on what your priorities are, and ultimately you’re the only one who can decide on whether the trade-offs are worth it for you. There have been various other threads on this forum that, in one way or another, have all asked “Instead of buying the real thing, can I save money by hotwiring something else to look like the real thing?” My own feeling is that this method may be more trouble than it’s worth, may not necessarily save you much money, and will in all likelihood produce a result that has a patchwork appearance. Some players may not be bothered by the patchy look, but others have a different view and may feel that (as the old expression goes, “the bitterness of the low quality lasts much longer than the sweetness of the low price.”
I’ve already got the paint I need (from other projects for other games). Patchy work doesn’t bother me that much. I guess the real question is: what do you think of my idea to modify the Anniversary to allow for the ANZAC and French? Any ideas you could give me?

Painting Custom ANZAC and French units.
I don’t have the Global '40, and don’t wish to aquire it, as getting both would cost me over $200 at my game store. Instead, I plan to modify the Anniversary a bit to allow for French and ANZAC units. I’m still working on how they will get units. I’m deciding between having them get troops similar to how China does, with modified rules, or giving them I.P.C. income. I’m going to take spare Russian units for the French, and Spare UK units for the ANZAC. I’m also going to either purchase their respective controls markers on eBay, or paint some simple ones on the backs of extras I have. I might also do some serious digging through eBay to see if I can get some units that way, but my intial searches haven’t come up with anything.
Is this a good idea, or shoud I give in and purchase the '40s?

RE: Tips needed for dealing with difficult player?
kick her in the groin
1. LMAO
2. You astonish me with the fact that you guessed that it was a female. May I assume you have had similar problems?Variance could probably tell by how you repeatedly used the singular “they” as if you were trying to hide the offending player’s gender. I’m guessing you didn’t want the fact that this person is a woman to skew anyone’s opinion on how to handle the situation.
You are correct. Our next game is tonight. We’ll see what happens when we (out group) brings this to her.

Tips needed for dealing with difficult player?
We have a player in our group who tends to get very…poor-sporty. They brag when they win (even minor, inconseqential victories), complain when they lose, and it drives us nuts, although we can’t play without them. Whenever a rule is clarified by the handy rulebook, if it helps their opponent, they complain, and scolds us when we get a rule confused. Is there anyway any of you experienced players have learned to make the game enjoyable for all, or should we play a different game entirely? We all love Axis and Allies, so I want to try and remedy this (I know we should talk to the player directly, but all hell would break loose at any accusation).
