I completely agree. The allies have to use every unit on the board in a very useful way, because they are much more important than the axis units. Once again Japan would love to have free IPCs from Russia while taking out 20 units that the allies need to have.

RE: The Borneo gambit
I feel as though drawing Japan north is a lose lose. Japan can grab easy IPC’s and they don’t have the Russian monkey on their back. They wouldn’t have to worry about a threat to Korea or Manchuria. The best thing for Russia to do is move back to Amur on T2 or T3.

RE: What type of music do you guys listen to while playing a&a?
We go back and forth between classic rock and some metal

RE: Don't you think GW 1936 deserves a Kickstarter campaign?
Agreed. The community has had time to put their roots in AA and most wont leave 1940 Global for a new game.

RE: Hurricane Irma
For sure. So grateful that we didn’t have anything major. Others however were less fortunate. The news said that Irma was the 7th largest storm in recorded history. Crazy really.

https://ibb.co/eAUFTkHere are a few links to some pictures. One downed tree was the worst of our problems. We have power and we had no flooding which is great. The neighborhood next to us flooded and for obvious reasons is still without power. The community has really rallied and everything is making great progress.
I wanted to thank everyone on the forums for your support. YG said in his most recent video that he loves the AA community and I can really see why. I also wanted to thank GeneralHandGrenade for his shout out and I hope that all others in the Florida community are as well off as I! -
RE: Hurricane Irma
My man-cave is downstairs. We are hoping that our area didnt flood. All of my AA stuff was in there

Hurricane Irma
I live in Riverview Florida just south of Tampa, I evacuated to Atlanta and will be returning home within the next few days. I’ll post pictures of the damage around my area when I get there. I’ve heard that my neighborhood has no power and lots of downed trees and debris. Hopefully we don’t have any structural damage.

RE: Japanese Naval Base on Java
I have weighed the Java naval base option and have come to a conclusion. In my opinion, the naval bases in Malaya, Philippines, Hong Kong, and the Caroline Islands have all of the range you need, that a base in Java would provide. You can see this for yourself by moving 3 sea zones away from Java in any direction, and see that the naval bases listed above can reach. Any operation that you may be considering in the Indian Ocean can be reached by the Malaysian naval base.
Now moving forward with “new strategies” being conducted from a naval base in this location, I have come across a few that are feasible for the Japanese navy. During WWII there was an operation called “Divine Dragon Operation No.2” in which the Japanese used submarines to attack allied forces staged near Madagascar. You can tweak this real life scenario to fit your Japanese strategy in the Indian Ocean in a few different ways, that can be effective.
First the Japanese can send submarines, to the eastern coast of Africa, effectively disrupting the convoy of three sea zones (71, 72, 80). This can disrupt a total of 12 IPC’s depending on the neutrality of some of the nations, but more realistically you can disrupt about 6 IPC’s a turn from the UK. Your 3 Japanese subs will cost only cost you 6 IPC’s because you already start the game with 2, and the likeliness of the UK being able to destroy these submarines will be low considering the first few rounds of the game will prove costly for the UK fleet. That being said, it is not of much strategic value to the Japanese to do this, unless you are assisting the Italians to take control of Africa. By diverting the UK, you open the door for Italy to make moves in northern Africa.
The second strategy that I find more reliable for he Japanese, is to take South Africa at the beginning of J4. This would be possible, using landing forces, along with a few carriers. The UK would never see it coming until it was too late. At the end of J3 you can have an invasion force staged in SZ 75. The value is actually pretty great here. Japan although it does not have a bonus for doing so, would have about 10 IPC’s within just a few turns, cutting those IPC’s from the allies and mainly the UK. It also cuts any support from South Africa for the UK, making it easier for the Italian forces to take control of northern Africa. Alot of people will argue that this is a waste of Japanese naval forces, however by the beginning of turn 5, the Japanese can move their navy right back to the coast of West India, with an invasion force to assist in an attack on Calcutta on J6. Now this does leave your backside open for the US to move into northern waters, however with the appropriate defensive purchases, they should not be able to hold anything for a turn, leaving Japan in control of mainland, as well as having a strategic foothold in Africa.
Now all of that being said, the additional naval base in Java is not necessary if you use the Malaysian naval base. This strategy has not been used very much at all, so I cannot give advise as to whether or not it is tried and true, I have considered this before, and do plan to implement it at some point. The Japanese navy did at one point consider taking Madagascar and a forwarding base, to destroy supply lines and communication for the allies in the Indian Ocean and East Africa, however the Admirals did not find it strategically necessary because they felt that the Allies could retaliate and destroy any Japanese forces in that area, because of weakened supply lines for the Japanese considering the distance.

RE: The Russian Expiditionary Force in Iraq
My group has actually done this a few times and from what we have experienced, it is better to use those forces in the defense of Moscow and for small retaliation forces. It is more important for the UK player to take Iraq or prevent the Axis from getting there. If Germany is totally focused on Sea Lion or Moscow, chances are that they won’t be assisting Italy in the Med. This makes it easier for the allies to control Africa and the Middle East. Russia can’t do anything strategically with Iraq other than gain a few IPCs. Use the Russian pieces for more than their value. The mech and the infantry will defend at a 2. Why waste their value going for a territory that provides no strategic value for Russia? For example, lets say best case scenario you gain 15 IPC as Russia taking it. You can use that for 5 infantry in the defense of Moscow. You have 2 infantry (if they lived through the assault on Iraq) That can’t make it back to Moscow. So now you are only up 3 infantry. Lets say Germany does their small excursions for low IPC amounts, and you want to take it back. Well now you would be using the infantry that you gained. If you didn’t want to take them back, then Germany has that many more infantry for fodder. The UK however can use Iraq for many different things. A forwarding base to India, a minor IC, and it prevents an Italian control there. Lets say Russia takes it and the UK is not doing to well in Africa and Germany is on their way to Moscow. Is Russia going to put a minor IC there? No because they cant afford it. Due to all of these reasons, it is better for Russia to avoid these Middle East territories.
I suppose all of this is just my opinion based on the games that I have played though. Has anyone ever taken Iraq with Russia and had it go successfully?

RE: Anti-Sub Tech Delayed (YG's 8d - G40)
YG, based on your videos I know that you do alot of play testing for your different house rules. Please let us know how the D8 works as well as the anti-sub tech delay because it seems like a very interesting concept. I would maybe like to try this but I would like to hear how well it worked. Thanks!

RE: AAA & amphib assault (Global 1940)
I feel as though this only furthers the uselessness of a AAA. I suppose that is why there are so many on the board to start the game. I don’t really see a point in transporting them unless you have nothing else to do.

RE: Advise on house-rules
I would stick with the OOB rules for Spring 1942. I have this edition as well and sometimes play it just for nostalgia. Global is quite a leap from 1942 and to hold people’s attention long enough to get them to play it again is a difficult task. I would even suggest playing one side of Global. Maybe just do Europe. YoungGrasshopper has a fantastic video about bringing new players to the game. Here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5L8E60BC4U&t=1245s

Battle Calculators
In my group of AA players, we do not allow the use of battle calculators. This is just simply a preference that we have, as you cannot reliably calculate (in the real world) a number of factors in the battle. We feel that the player controlling an army should take these “risks” by using their own common sense and or brain to figure out whether or not to attack. I wanted to see if other groups thought like we did on this subject.

RE: Artillery
I must say that I like artillery, but not nearly as much as mechanized infantry. To me mobility is key. This can be said for both Axis and Allied armies. Think about it… Germany needs to push Russia as quickly as possible. Japan needs the mobility to move inland, and the mechs also act as fodder for your massive air force. For the allies, especially the US, the ability to move quickly will be a must to constrict the IPC intake of the Axis. Now keep in mind that you need to pair tanks to blitz, however the mobility of the units especially during the noncombat phase is extremely useful.

RE: I Can't Repair My Battleships!
Great explanation! Thanks for the clarity, I don’t think I have ever come across this specific problem, however it is good to know for future games.
-
RE: I Can't Repair My Battleships!
In that case you would literally have to track where each of your ships moves for each economy. Example being if the battleship that starts in sz37 on the Pacific map were to move to the Europe side of the board what is the effect on it etc.

RE: Can it be too much?
@CWO:
keep in mind that “broad acceptance within the A&A community” isn’t necessarily the criterion for assessing if a modification is successful; in practical terms, the real criterion is whether it’s acceptable to your gaming group.
Im glad you brought this up, as my friends and I are constantly debating things like this. We will be implementing some of the rules I run across on the forum for test runs, and see if we like them, however we are not ones to deviate too much from the OOB rules. We are currently trying to work on the R&D to see if we can modify it in a way that is even and not at chance. I see alot of these on different AA members YouTube channels as well as here on the forum, I just can’t seem to agree with most of them.

Can it be too much?
Don’t get me wrong, I love to customize my AA game as much as the next enthusiast but is there a point at which the customization gets away from the original game in a way that makes it an entirely different game? Some rules can and are interpreted in different ways and I would even include some of the R&D rules in that as well. Some of this is tweaked for the right reason, however I see alot of add-ons and I guess you could say optional rules that are implemented in different AA members games that I feel take away from the spirit of the game. I am all for customization and I am not here to criticize anyone because I use customizations as well, I just wanted to get the community’s opinion on this subject. I also love the custom maps that I see around the forums, and have even considered building a new table using alot of things that I have come across on the forums. I already have a table that I built about 4 years ago and i’ll keep some of the customizations that I used in making that one, such as adding plexiglass over the map to keep it protected from food and drink. Thank you to everyone who has posted their customizations and please let me know what you think about some of them going too far!
