I’d say most games on this board are played without NA, So you have no IC in India at the start of the game. Therefore UK can’t hold India anyway most of the times it is left with 2 inf (an IC build by UK in India round 1 will be lost in J3). But the point is the Japan player in most cases has to many things to do for just one round (kill the dd in SZ 59, do hawai, do china, and other things depending on the UK move - maybe a UK trn in SZ 47 and recapture New Guinea or the english sub in SZ 46) so if you want to take out the UK fleet in SZ 34, sure you can, but you will miss these units at the other battles you have to take.

RE: Which side has an advantage?
I can only agree. This game is not all about numbers of units, don’t take me wrong the numbers of units count in the long run, but more important is position e.g. 20 german arm in Weu are not worth as much as the same 20 arm in Ukr, so 1 or 2 units placed at the crucial points on the startup map, make all the diffrence.
IMO the german player would have to strech himself quite thin to retake Ukr, do Egy and kill the BB if he had no bid units.

RE: Which side has an advantage?
Whithout looking at the outcome of these games, the latest bid in the League forum where definitly higher then 5, 6 or 7.
These are the latest bids:
9 9 6 9 9 8 9 8 9 8 10 9 8 9 9 11 7 9 10 9 10 9 10 8 9 10 7 9 9 10 8 9
Resulting in an average of round about 9 ipc.

RE: How does this work???
I do remember to have read of a similar problem with germany and england, but I think it was on an other forum.
Does Germany have 80 IPC to spend from the plunder in Russia, or does that money become ethereal and no one has it?
I tend to the first view. By capturing moscow on G10 the german plunders all ipc in the (russian) bank, but can’t spend them as long as berlin is in allied hands and can not collect income for german controlled territories. But when Japan liberates berlin in J10, he should be able to buy on G11.

I can verify that this news is no fake. I’ve read about it in the last days on my newspaper.

RE: Rule Question
LHTR 2.0 says to this:
“If the attacker has not withdrawn all units, defending submarines may submerge.”
This implies defending subs submerge after the attacker has chosen to either retreat (or submerge) or not.
(page 16 - Condition B) Defender withdraws subs by submerging)

RE: Countering Operation Sea Lion
I used your link and redid the battle I got your results then. But then I change the 1 (att land unit must live) to 0 and instead changed the OOL for the attacker in such a way, that the arm was lost last and now I got once again the 50% 0 units result. I’ve also done the battle in LL and the result seems to support the 50% failure for germany.
Maybe the program is flawed or just the option with the numbers of atacking land units that have to live.
And just lo clarify this: “I do not propose the sea lion.”
(I just stated that I would use only 1 die for tech even if someone wants to try this, so he could do a nearly normal buy on G1. If it worked fine he could try his sea lion then if not he still could play a normal game)

RE: Countering Operation Sea Lion
Sry Cmdr Jennifer.
I’ve redone the battle on frood with your proposed OOL (which is in fact the OOL I used in frood 2.0) and the results stay the same 50% 0 units for germany. The only time I got results simmiliar to yours was, when I only used 1 defending inf for the brits instead of 2.

RE: Countering Operation Sea Lion
Hey Cmdr Jennifer where did you get these odds? I’ve done the battle on frood (2.0) with
1 Inf 5 Fig 1 Bom 1 Arm vs. 1 Bom 2 Inf 1 Art 1 Arm 2 Fig
(OOL as listed above) and I get the following results (with a AAGun):
Probability % - units
0.12% - 8: 1 Inf, 5 Fig, 1 Bom, 1 Arm.
0.36% - 7: 5 Fig, 1 Bom, 1 Arm.
0.02% - 7: 1 Inf, 5 Fig, 1 Arm.
0.02% - 7: 1 Inf, 4 Fig, 1 Bom, 1 Arm.
1.72% - 6: 4 Fig, 1 Bom, 1 Arm.
0.02% - 6: 5 Fig, 1 Arm.
4.88% - 5: 3 Fig, 1 Bom, 1 Arm.
0.22% - 5: 4 Fig, 1 Arm.
9.3% - 4: 2 Fig, 1 Bom,
0.42% - 4: 3 Fig, 1 Arm.
11.76% - 3: 1 Fig, 1 Bom, 1 Arm.
0.92% - 3: 2 Fig, 1 Arm.
11.5% - 2: 1 Bom, 1 Arm. (average result)
1% - 2: 1 Fig, 1 Arm. (average result)
8.8% - 1: 1 Arm. (median result)
48.94% - 0: no units. That is the reason why I wouldn’t even try the sea lion with 1 fig destroyed by the russians.
The results with frood 1.0 where about the same, so I wonder why your odds are so much better

RE: Countering Operation Sea Lion
@the:
but consider that the fewer dice you spend on tech, the more your chance of just wasting IPC.
True but as I said above, if I only buy one die and it does not work OK fine I can live with that. because 1 arm less bought on G1 does not ruin the game 5 point of TUV is something that can happen anytime in trading territories. If it work than you have still 35 ipc left and can go for some transport to retake london on G2 (or just anything else you think worthwhile)
And even if I you buy 8 tech dice you still have a chance to fail. (5/6^8=0.23)
23% to not get the tech under these circumstances, with no units bought on G1, I don’t know if one can recover from this - I guess not. What about bidding an extra transport in the Baltic?
If you get an 8 bid and place the trn in the baltic sea the allies have to know what you are trying for. I gues they would send both russian figs to london - else you take london with 2 arm and 2 air left (frood) on average and the chance of failure is only 10%.
If there are 2 more figs in london you take it with only 46% - not the best odds.
These assumption are based on 2 inf 2 arm 5 fig 1 bom - since russia should try to bring 1 german fig down on R1 else you have 65% chance of sucsess in the second scenario.

RE: Some questions about the board-game rules
So can you tell me why you bid for the Axis instead of the Allies in A&A-Revised :? ?
The Allies have the economical and positional advantage. The Axis have the tactical advantage due to their starting units. I haven’t played that many games by myself, but I noticed that it is easier for me to play the axis because they have a clear goal and that is moskow. With the Allies I am not that good because they have so many possibilities and they have to work together much more so than the Axis. But as far as I know the games between good players favour the Allies therefore the bid has been developed. If your group think the Axis have the edge, then maybe you should start bidding for them with time and more games to be played you may come around.
[Edit]Ah, before I forget: Can you please list all units that cannot attack or defend each other? For example: can infantry defend against airplanes?
Air can attack everything and can be attacked by everything except subs.
No land unit can attack sea units. But BB and DD (with the appropiate tech) can attack land units in landing operations (but only once before the normal combat is resolved! Any casualties do not participate in the normal combat)[Edit2] Last question for today ;) : Is the number of fighters per carrier limited?
There can be only 2 figs on 1 carrier (or less).

RE: Countering Operation Sea Lion
By the way if Russia took out the Ukr fig, the odds for sucsess are pretty slim. I made the battle on frood with with OOL proposed by Cmdr Jennifer and Germany has only 51.7% to take England with at least 1 tnk.
On the other hand there are still some points I disagree about. With enough bid Germany can take Egy even without support by air (6 ground troops should do the job - 2Lyb, 2 Bid and 2 from SEu)
And if London is not recaptured by the americans (as proposed above), then I can build 8 inf in London, so you mabe never retake it. Also I strongly disagree about the english beeing unimportant for the Allies - cause if London is not liberated the german does not have to take Afr so you can retake the territories with the US.
Since germany already has +8 from london I would be contend to leave every tan territory alone, if there is the threat of recapture by the US, because all british territories are lost for the Allies concerning the ipcs. This is a huge economical shift in favour of the Axis, cause now they earn more than US and Russia combined.

RE: Countering Operation Sea Lion
I do not favor the sea lion, it actually is not a topic for me, because I do not play OOB. But I have to ask why do you think Germany buys only tnks with his cash if he succeeded in England (you say yourself this is not good - and it’s not).
Furthermore I don’t see germany spending 40 ipc on tech. Because I’m not commited to Sealion. If I would try it, then I would probably only role 1 die max. 2. If it works fine, then I have the tech and can still buy a lot of equipment. If not OK, I can still play a normal game from here on, just 1 tnk less bought on G1 doesn’t ruin the game for him.
And with a russian fig in London I wouldn’t even try.
Do you disagree?

RE: Countering Operation Sea Lion
Even with the 2 fighters the Russian Tripple is chancy at best. Without them it becomes horrible.
30% belo fails (+19% just 1 tnk survives)
35% Ukr fails (+10% just 1 tnk survives)
37% Wrus fails (+8% just 1 art survives)This means 0.7x0.65x0.63=0.29, so you have a 29% chance to suceed in all your attacks. More than 2 out of 3 times you will fail to take at least one of these lands.
But even if the battles goes average then you will have:
1inf, 1art in Wrus
1inf, 1tnk in Belo
2tnk in UkrGermany can now move in force to Belo (2inf, 4tnk) taking the land with 1inf and 4 tnk.
Will destroy the remainig tnks in Ukr with 2inf 2fig, most likely taking the land with 1 inf.
And will bring its norwegian inf to Arch. Then it is still possible to take Egy with the Lybian units (+ bid) together with 1fig (balk) and 1 bom resulting in probably 2inf, 1art, 1tnk,1fig and 1bom taking the land with 1art and 1 tnk. And the UK battleship will be destroyed by BB+2fig+SS.Russia will most likely not be in the condition to retake belo (even with 3inf 3tnk bought by Russia only 50% to retake belo). And if Germany bought somewhat heavy on tnks (maybe 5inf, 5 tnk) on G2 Germany will be able to stack in Ukr.
So Russia has lost 9inf, 1art and 1tnk on R1 and will loose 1inf, 3tnk on G1, this is almost everything they had in their western territories at start of the game.
I guess the situation would be pretty grim for Russia let alone 1 of the R1 attacks goes bad.
-
RE: Another Noob Question, Regarding Friendly Territories and fighters
You are right more units change everything. I just wanted to point out the diffrence between art and tnk as second unit to a trn.
You have to use what the situation requests for.
-
RE: Another Noob Question, Regarding Friendly Territories and fighters
I tend to disagree about the art and the tnk.
If all is finished in one round you sure are right cause the attack values of 1inf + 1art (2+2=4) are the same (on average) as 1inf + 1tnk (1+3=4) but if the battle lasts more than 1 round the last option is much stronger. This is because if you take 1 hit (just as an example, if you have more trn loaded this way you can have more hits, but the princaple stays the same) in the first case you loose a inf with an attack value of 2 (aided by the art) leaving 2 for the art. In the second case you loose the inf too, but you keep the tank wich has still 3 on attack.
I’ve heard the term “skew” to describe this concept (unevenly distributed attack values).

Just a question
I’m probably going to translate some more of these strategies (“German and Russian Basics” are already posted), but I noticed, that the Japan and US Basics are not published yet. Are there any problems with these articles? Should I leave them out?
