Yeah, I wouldn’t hold my breath. But really, I don’t mind paying a little extra for a full game, that gives me extra components I can use in other games. And just think, Flashman, you could draw little railroad lines all over your old board! :-D

I think it comes down to the fact that these are all new sculpts. When you mold parts, the tool to mold them costs a bazillion dollars, and the parts themselves cost pennies; so it stands to reason that the initial run is more expensive, and the the tool cost gets more and more spread out the more units you sell.
This is the theoretical explanation, although I can’t see why you would pass an extra few thousand dollars in tooling on to your customers in the form of a $40 markup.
Could be the demand factor as well. They know this game will most likely appeal to a niche market who have been waiting for a game like this for years, and will be willing to shell out the extra $40.

I never liked that spain touches both the Atlantic and the med. Meaning a naval fleet in the atlantic (allies) could unload and bombard and capture it, while an Axis fleet in the med (Italy) can unload and bombard also.Reminds me of revised, how the US would take france, and Germany would load a transport in the med, and bombard with a battlship while unloading at southern france.

Someone didn’t read the rules, on page 12 Serbia doesn’t have any control markers on it, meaning it wasn’t attacked by Austria as per the rules.
It has an Austria marker on it in both pics.

Let’s take a step back. Why didn’t major powers invade so-called ‘strict neutrals’ in the war? Was it because it wasn’t worth the effort, or because there were repercussions for doing it? I think whatever rules are put in place should be as historical as possible.

I personally think there should be more negative repercussions for invading a strict neutral, although 1940 rules didn’t make a whole lot of sense historically. I just feel like there would be more international outcry than, ‘Oh well, they have to defend themselves now.’

However it isn’t the exact scheme I would use; one main difference would be that land territories would be plain light green, with perhaps some mountainous areas in grey, deserts in sand colour and so on.
A shaded border around the outer tt is enough to denote starting national control, indeed on the official 1914 map the presence of flags and control markers makes the coded tt colours redundant as well as gaudy and distracting.
I like this. Sort of a ‘Total War’ feel, if you’ve ever played the recent iterations of that series.
Actually, I’m quite happy with the diamond layout for this game, as long as the western front areas are big enough, and there’s room for Mexico in the eastern corner.
Yeah, that’s the one suggestion I would make, when I printed the map (even bigger than the actual map), the European tt’s were a little too small. I would probably suggest using the OOB map for a guide on sizing and proportion between the continents, and redraw the borders as you see fit.

I personally don’t think all house rules have to be KISS…if they add flavor or interest, then they’re worth it in my eyes.
I think the idea that house rules have to simplify or streamline the (usually already simplified and streamlined) OOB game is a bit off…while I’m sure some rules are born out of the players trying to correct something they find imbalanced or incorrect with the original rules, most of the house rules I create (or like) are either trying to make the game more historically accurate or interesting.
My ‘Waffen SS’ or ‘Vichy France’ rules don’t really do anything for balance, but it’s pretty cool to see those markers on the map during a G40 game.

Scorched Earth/IPC Degradation
Just had an idea on the subject of scorched earth….Since areas that were fought over in WW1 eventually turned into ‘lifeless moonscapes,’ it’d be kind of cool if the IPC values of contested tt’s gradually degraded, like maybe -1 IPC every 2 turns. Might be adding unnecessary complexity, but it adds the effect of contested tt’s eventually becoming literally worthless.

Id rather not speculate and just play the damn game first, which may seem as a novel concept before inventing 50 pages of house rules to “fix” it.
Not sure where the hostility is coming from…it seems like the sole purpose of these boards is for people who are (despite the complaining and houseruling) genuinely excited about this game coming out and just like to kick around ideas for making the game even cooler.
Or, I guess if you want traffic on the site to drop to zero, we can all log off until the game comes out so we can have a truly informed conversation.
Personally, I’m really f***ing excited about the game coming out, and besides consuming all the information about it I can, I like to come here to have conversations with people who are as interested as I am.

I’ve no problem with America getting a higher base income as long as it can’t spend anything until it declares war.
The main reason Germany decided to risk USW was the poor showing of the American army in Mexico; it persuaded them that Pershing and co were not worth worrying about.
The paradox, then, is that if America had had a significantly bigger army in 1917, it may never have been given the opportunity to use it.
Even if US income is huge, it still gives the CPs the incentive to
a) keep America out of the war for as long as possible,
b) defeat the Allies before America can make a difference.
Which gives the game a certain momentum beyond a simple die rolling attrition fest.
I agree as well. This was the point of the German Spring Offensive of 1918; they were trying one last ditch effort to overrun the Allies in the West before the Americans could arrive with their massive numbers of ground troops. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_Offensive

It seems like the U.S. as a playable nation might just not work in this game. Playing as US would probably be as fun as playing China in global.
I would suggest just dropping US as a playable nation. Have the U.S.'s role in the game be extra IPCs to either france/UK and/or ever increasing automatic infantry that gets deployed to the front. This would start after the US declaration of war.
Honestly, I can’t blame LH from including the US but functionally it doesn’t make alot of sense in the game.

You can’t simulate 2 million men with just a few extra IPC’s, and you shouldn’t. The U.S. arrived late to the game, but they played a significant role against the Germans, who as you’ll remember had just had one of their fronts pacified.
Again, I challenge all of you who think the U.S. was insignificant in the war to drop them from the game, and see how you fare as the Allies.
As far as the ‘fun’ factor, this is why everyone is suggesting that one player plays both Russia and the U.S.; Russia will most likely drop out of the game as the U.S. is entering.

If you guys can get 8 country turns in under an hour, then either you aren’t thinking that far ahead or you guys are much faster than me
I think that’s the crux of the matter right there. We do think many turns ahead, but were doing it during the other players turns so that when our turn comes around we can just go. Also, I don’t know about you, but I usually have a battle plan mapped out before I go into a game based on my prior analysis of all possible moves, and reactions to possible enemy counter moves.
I agree with you on principle, especially if it is 1v1, but when you go to 2v2 or 3v3 games, things change fairly suddenly- you may have planned on that British Incursion to the Med, but after Germany got great dice or France decided to buy fleet instead of infantry, you may have to rethink. A lot of times side conversations start to happen during someone else’s turn (you are waiting a while for your turn to come up after all), prolonging the game as well. Even if you know you plan before your turn, it takes some time to move units, roll dice, and place units. I suppose you could be fairly efficient at that and be under ten minutes, but not much- especially if there are more than one attack.
I think, all planning and sidebars aside, the fact that there’s only one movement phase, only one round per combat, and dice on the battleboard instead of moving units, is going to shorten things dramatically. I don’t see it taking much longer than 10-20 mins per player turn.

IF we were going to be 100% honest with ourselves about it, American involvement in World War 1 was, at best, decisive but more anecdotal than anything else. The main reason the US is included in this game, and (IMHO) has to be included in they way they are, is because the game is being made by an American company for a largely American audience.
This is a widely accepted belief, but one that has been challenged by recent historians. The truth is that, for most of the war, the Allies were out of their depth in terms of weapons technology and tactical innovation, and by 1918 were in danger of being overwhelmed by German forces returning from the newly pacified Eastern Front.
It can be debated that without the U.S.‘s intervention, the Allies on the Western Front would have been overrun.
I challenge all those European elitists who seem so intent on ignoring the United States’ influence to try playing the game without them as a power, and see how many times they win as the Allies.P.S. Rail movement: Units in your capital territory can move 2 or 3 spaces. The limit of units you can move per turn is the IPC value of your capital.
