RE: The War in Africa
@Imperious:
Well I’d like to be before the Spanish American War which is 1898, and the Second Boer War of 1899. if it was 1900, Spain would be too weak and the Pacific map needs something interesting to fight over. Â Japan and Russia would be at war as well. That makes alot of action in the Pacific.
And players turns would be in order of economics, which means it could change any turn.
Plus this incident in 1898 almost led to England and France fighting each other…
Sounds a lot like Pax Britanica
A multi player game of empire, diplomacy, and global confrontation. The Great Powers of Great Britain, France, the US, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Russia, and Japan vie throughout the world for the wealth and esteem conferred by vast colonial holdings in the far-flung corners of the Earth. Each player maneuvers his administrative and military assets to establish control over the choicest and most strategic areas, keeping a wary eye toward encroaching opponents whose colonial ambitions are every bit as great. Conflict between national wills is more often resolved through peaceful negotiation than through war; but when national honor is too severely tried, war can occur- on a scale that threatens to evolve into the War to End All Wars!
Time scale = 4 years per turn; Map scale = abstract; Unit scale = Corps/Fleet, Division/Task Force, Regiment/Squadron; Playing time = approx 4 to 7 hours
Includes 666 counters, 2 22" x 32" mapsheets, 8 player sheets, 1 administrative pad, 2 six-sided dice, 1 counter storage tray, and rules booklet
We play it with sculps from War:Age of Imperialism.

RE: 1914 Italy's turn by Larry harris
Albania is just a bridge too far for me  :-P . I know it’s A&A & not WiF but still
KISS doesn’t mean just make stuff up.
Let’s hope IL Game sees the light of day or the Flash Man starts selling
hard board Maps. -
RE: RR House Rules
This idea also crossed my mind.
Problem is a blob of German units could shuck all the way to Egypt if the Ottomans take it and puke forth all over Africa. That was what I thought, too. My idea is that rails should be limited to Europe, like they were in real life, so no French troops railing from Tunisia clear to Togoland in one turn. Also, the second part of my idea was that troops can only rail across originally owned or allied-owned territories, including pro-side neutrals. The problem with this, of course, is that the Rumanian-Serbian border keeps the two Triple Allies from resupplying the Ottomans at all.
Serbian/Romania did block AH/German aid to Otto in the war once they were defeated their RR were used to open
supply lines. -
RE: Worst part of the game so far
No, You can still attack Russia in the newer games. There are just more territories. A Tank built in Manchuria should not be able to move across Siberia so quickly- two turns to threaten Moscow!
I enjoy the newer games because there is action all over the board, not just in the Atlantic and Eastern Front. In classic/revised rarely did you see Japan contested until either they are in Africa (or Moscow) or Germany is all but defeated. I actually didn’t like playing Japan because there’s no competition in the Pacific for several turns. India and/or Australia falls with rarely a fight! How fun is that?
I like fighting for Africa, fighting for the DEIs, etc. Its just more fun than the optimal ‘scripted’ America shuck on a KGF (for Classic and Revised).
Its two ways to deal with that, man. You can play the Europe stand-alone game and the Pacific stand-alone game, or you can play with individual victory conditions. Its the win-as-a-team spirit that broke the game, cause now everybody gang up on Germany. And they should be punished when doing that. Like when Japan get a set of VC’s in the Pacific map, lets call that an individual cut-throught win, and the Allies lost. Derogatory……
I agree with what you said… And the fact that in AA1940, if Japan is left alone she can win on the Pacific map fairly easily- which forces a more historical outcome- i.e. the US contesting Japan in Pacific.
Why do you discuss that here at 1914 Board?
Probably because there is just only so much bitching we can do on WWI without seeing the actual Game  :-D
Seriously I’m excited about this Game but I do feel,at least with my Group it will be heavily Home Ruled. -
RE: House Rules
Depends on seeing the complete Rules-I’ll throw in Moral,Blockade effects, stragetic movement (Rails),
Gas (for sure) & beefed up Navies. -
RE: Test Play Setup
Nice but it does seem the WF will be at tight fit.The choice of Africa beyond the Mediterrian coast regions
does seem a bit odd.The German colonial forces (mostly natives) put up an interesting resistence
& actually outlasted the Kaiser. It was all very small scale stuff & having to make the WF too small
to handle all the units that will be there doesn’t seem like a good idea.I have a Board Game where Africa & the German Asia colonies are represented by side Boards,
which would made more sense. But again we’ll see when the actual map surfaces. -
RE: Askaris Born
You don’t even need Askaris in national colours - just use some black German WWII infantry (you’ve got lots of them, right?)
I like Pacific 1940 Chinese a little better, they’ve got the whole “kepi” look going on….granted, not as many people will have those compared to the old Krauts.
Thought the same thing & ordered some they arrived yesterday & should work well as Askaris

RE: Is Germany screwed?
I don’t think we need more than one aircraft type. However, I do think there should be a tech system in this game instead of just “turn 4 magic missiles”
Not exactly sure how a 1914 tech chart would work but.
1. Tanks - You may now build tanks
2. Advanced Aircraft - Your aircraft become 2/2/3
3. Chemical Warfare - Roll a die when attacking a territory, 1-3: remove that many enemy infantry; 4-6: No effect
4. Observation Balloons - In battles where no aircraft are present, one of your artillery counts as having air support.
5. Advanced Submarines - If you opt to submerge, all enemy ships may only fire at ‘1’ when trying to sink you.
6. Radio Communications - During combats where friendly forces are also in the contested zone, roll a die. That many friendly infantry may also participate in the attackThese are good. The Gas attacks are a tad draconion give the Game scale but I’m keeping these in mind as possible pimps after I see the actual rules.
I’m of mixed feelings on trenches & forts I like the idea but given the Game scale I’ll probably just consider them as built into the defensive .

RE: Is Germany screwed?
Choo-Choo :-D
I have a feeling that this Game may become massively Home Ruled.Lets face it unless your a A&A
completeist freak(you know who you are  )WWI is not the hottest ticket in town.I think most of us interested in this Game are interested in & studied the Great War,thus we’ll tend
to add or subtract things we feel are more in tune to the era.I’ve preordered my copy (2 actually) & will wait till the Rules come before I add or delete but I
already have list of things I want to see in the Game if they are not in included. -
RE: Is Germany screwed?
It’s wait & see of course but I find it hard to believe that some type of Stragetic Movement won’t be included.
It’s an effective way to show the importance of rail networks w/o having rails on the Game Board. Can’t wait to see the full Rules on this Game.

RE: Opening the door for more World War One based games? Your opinion
I love gaming WWI but I don’t think the demand will be there to expand beyond the base game.
-
RE: Ottomans entry into the War.
The Goeben & Breslau incident triggered the war.
Damn I thought it was the Note :-D
The Turks declared War on Russia by a Naval Bombardment of Russia Black Sea Ports.
-
RE: Who Will You Play as?
Well I’m probably stuck in 2 player mode but my go to Nation is
The Austro-Hungarian Empire.I just have a thing for Senile Empires
& faded glory. -
The Blockade
So we now know that unrestricted Sub Warfare can reduce IPC’s for the US & GB .This
makes me strongly suspect Larry will include some mechanic for the Naval Blockade
that eventually strangled Germany. Some stragetic WWI Games just abstract the Blockade by reducing moral &/or
production resources each year. Some just give the EP a set number of victory points
to represent the Blockade effects.A few allow some abstracted Naval Combat where Germany has a chance to reduce
the Blockade effects.A&A WWI however will include Navies & thus Naval Combat
which probably will tie in with Blockade effects. It seems logical then that
Germany will suffer some IPC lost due to the Blockade.Any thoughts on how the Blockade & it’s effects will be handled, maybe
with the British turn Larry will explain. -
RE: Images of the Map?
I do like that there are conditions for Russia’s revolution and it doesn’t just automatically happen like some thought maybe it would for simplicity. I also find it interesting that it is an optional rule. Do you think people will want to use it most of the time or not?
Not sure why it’s “optional” One of the highlights of any WWI Stragetic Game is getting Russia into Revolution (well from the CP
perspective  ).So for us it will NOT be optional (although we may fool around a bit between the Fall of the Tsar & the Red’s
taking over  .OD

RE: More News! Russia!
Russian Revoultion-KISS but with the Fall of the Tsar the Republic continued the war. Then with the October Revolution
Revolution Lenin sued for peace (he sent a Note :-D ).This may just be due to the time frame of the game. The last Russian Offensive was launched by the Republic in the Summer of 1917.
